A nice write-up on Neil Balme, and how he 'agreed' to turn down the Gold Coast to stay with Geelong. ;)

OF ALL the talented individuals who have - so the cliche goes - ''turned their back on the Gold Coast'' in recent times, Neil Balme just might have been the most valuable and genuinely targeted one that got away.

He's done a wonderful job and is genuinely loved by the playing group and administration alike.
He's obviously got a unique style and perhaps it's a style that isn't considered trendy in today's environment of business types, computers and statistical analysis but as a football manager he's got the results on the board regardless of how unfashionable his approach.

Arguably Geelong's best recruit in the last four years that has delivered us two flags.

If and when he leaves our club I'd only want to see him return to Richmond as president; he'll do wonders for his former club.

what is it with GC and us,

so far they have tried to get:

Brian Cook - fail
Neil Balme - fail
Ken Hinkley - succeed
Joel Selwood - fail
Gary Ablett - ???

well it should be flattering, in that they respect highly what these people have done to bring Geelong up from insolvency off-field, and the lower-mid table on-field. Success breeds success as they say, and GC need to hit the ground running to prevent a Fremantle-type scenario, which only seems to be getting its shit together after 16-odd years of participation.
