corrupted external hard drive

My external 750Gb hard drive became corrupted. Nothing i try will open the drive so i can remove the files. The only option it gives me is to format the drive which will erase all my data.

Can anyone recommend a program or something i can try. The drive contains a combination of movies, photos, documents and software.

I had the same problem with a 1TB drive.
How I overcame that was to run a data recovery program (this is the one I used http://www.getbackdata.net/) , get as much as you can from that recovery...transfer what it recovers to a "safe" HDD, then low level format the damaged HDD. Try that
