News Costa Reprimanded

Do we actually have an avenue to discuss Ablett now that supermod closed the thread - or is a new one required?
have you read every post on that Ablett/Gold coast thread? There surely could be nothing to say that hasn't already been done and done and done some more over the 1000 odd posts. But if you have some NEW ACTUAL TRUE Info,.....IMO, CF has been very patient

Elephant stamp for you VEEDUBS:) Wholeheartedly support you. Why should we continue a discussion on a matter of major significance to the club with wider implications for the competition? Complete waste of forum space!

Very patient??? - how so?

Discussing our club and players is why we supporters use this forum.
Mods should not dictate who we can and can't discuss. Especially when it is issue as huge as this.

This bloke also shut down a thread discussing our new captain. :o

Yeah, I agree with this. I think Costa and GFC have played this beautifully. We have pretty much placed an free advert in the media saying is there any Businesses prepared to pay Gazza to keep him at Geelong. Im sure Liam Pickering will be busy taking inquires this week.

Told you so.

------
The CEO did reveal the ongoing debate about third-party deals would likely pay off for Ablett, with local businesses queuing up to sign the star onballer.

“Since this exposure has come to fruition over the past week we have received phone calls from many companies saying, 'We would like to sponsor Gary Ablett',” Cook said.

**** the AFL piss me off.

It's one rule for the teams they want to give a leg up to, and another rule for the rest.

We do all the hard yards with a player, only for the AFL to step in and basically allow some Johnny Come Latelys to rock up with an open chequebook and take him away.

This doesn't even just apply to us with Gaz or Selwood, i'd be just as pissed if Buddy or Roughy for example, wound up going north just because an expansion club is essentially allowed to pay them whatever they like, while their club have their hands tied behind their backs.

Talk about shifting the goalposts to suit their own ends

Well said. On the money.

Time the AFL came clean on when these deals started because most of us thought the days of under the counter deals were over.

Showing my allegiances but was this nonsense backed by the AFL to get Juddy back to Melbourne to resurrect a blockbuster club?

No Melbourne club can match the Eagles profitability so lets invent another way around it.

I hope Chairman Costa demands answers.

My take on Frank's comments were - listen Geelong business community, you can help keep Ablett by signing him up to do some minor marketing for your company. If we get a few of you doing it, it will assist the club, and will assist you.

I wonder whether many business leaders knew that they could pay a player outside the cap (I didn't really know much about it - not that I'm a business community leader...)

Seems we were right on the money about this one Premiers2007!

There is no way in the world Costa and Cook did not know exactly what they were doing on this one. Well played gents, a masterstroke. This has certainly shifted my thinking on the likelihood that the Cats will keep Ablett.

The thing to remember now though is that the AFL will be policing it a lot more closely and are going to want to see bang for the buck. So Gary will actually have to be going out and doing stuff for these companies rather than just having his face shown in a newspaper ad every now and then.

Would he want to do all of this extra work, or would he like to get the same/more money up on the coast just for playing footy?

Frank Costa is a genius, he knew what he was doing by going to the Herald Sun and now all of a sudden the club has been bombarded with offers of people offering to sponsor/hire Ablett to keep him at Geelong.

Under the rules the club couldn't go to these people without the financial agreement going towards the salary cap, now that these people are going to straight to Ablett and his management the agreement has no impact on the salary cap.

The bigger picture is that this sort of thing will create enormous problems down the track. As Ron Barassi said competitions that have allowed this type of thing to occur have the same strong teams at the top year after year. Remember that we are not in the very top echelon when it comes to membership/sponsorship. Also, I wonder how Jimmeh, Joel S and others will feel if the equivalent packages aren’t on offer to them.

Cookie has sought to dampen things down thankfully.

“GEELONG chief executive Brian Cook says Frank Costa was misinformed when he said the Cats would seek personal sponsors for Gary Ablett.”

“Sometimes presidents get it wrong and this time Frank got it wrong. Third-party or independent arrangements are not supposed to be catalysed or initiated by the clubs and we can’t do that and haven’t done that,” Cook said on SEN radio.

Can I hide Ablett conspiracy theories in here? :)

What if................

The cats have firm word that ablett has signed and pickering says he hasn't.

"As I said to you Cooky, Gaz loves the cats, but the money is just too significant. If the money was here he'd stay"

Cook checks his source again and feels the source is right.

So the cats decide they need to run a bit of a PR campaign and at the same time smoke out the truth.

Costa says what he said, prospective sponsors flock.

In 3 weeks word starts leaking that Ablett is rejecting every sponsorship offer.

Why would he take on 7 new sponsors that will require additional work when he can receive the same benefit for on ground performances?

If that happens it will be big. And the truth will come out.

Whether this was by design or not, the cats are forcing a hand here.
I like it.

Great analysis.

It could be a while until we find out if any deals have been rejected or accepted though, I guess this is where Hutchys rubbish bin tactics might actually scoop a story we need from the media.

I feel dirty.

You could punch a heap of holes in what I said.
And we probably wouldn't hear of it. What company would want to make public that it had been rejected. But if those who called GFC this week and were redirected felt harshly done by you could 'maybe' expect that they'd ring cook back and say "why did Frank say what he said, Ablett isn't interested in any offers"

And then if pickering plays it cool he will say to the sponsor "we like the product and the deal, but it is all subject to ablett signing at geelong and that wont happen until the 2nd half of the year"

either way. we are stuffed. the innuendo will go on for ever.

Thankfully Frank brought third party payments to the attention of the wider footballing community, which includes Ron Barassi in this instance.

If Frank had said nothing, for the most part we'd all still be in the dark.
Frank's comments were the catalyst for healthy discussion on this issue.
We should all just be grateful I think. If you read between the lines its also given Cook the chance to open a line of communication to the AFL.

...“Since this exposure has come to fruition over the past week we have received phone calls from many companies saying, 'We would like to sponsor Gary Ablett',” Cook said.

"So this puts another perspective on third-party arrangements, in terms of ‘What is my role now?’ Do I pass them on to players managers, say here are the rules, etc, etc.”...

I agree with your sentiments otherwise re problems down the track.

Just saying towards the last 200 odd posts of that thread it was going around in circles ad nauseam, but any NEWS is obviously threadworthy, and the latest Costa info is NEWS. So I should be replying that starting a new one is the only way forward if there is that much that needs to be discussed

VEEDUBS

Looks like this thread might be in transition.

V.C

Interesting scenario. What if a hypothetical player signed a hypothetical Memorandum of Understanding (made possible by the f@#*ing AFL leaving a loophole for the benefit of the GC and GWS) while still contracted and in the hypothetical M o U there was a confidentiality clause. What if a hypothetical player is less than pleased with the speculation, innuendo, rumours etc surrounding his future but is legally constrained from saying anything.

Then I'd say he's in for a shit year.
Might even argue with a girlfriend over it and break up ;)

the afl has dug a massive hole for itself. wood can be the toughest cop in the west but the deals that occur under the table are the ones that no-one is talking about.

i know first hand first year players have their fuel, and credit cards sorted by their clubs. payments are made and the afl is playing games.

as i posted previously what is stopping gazza selling a hand made guernsey personally signed on ebay (ie limited edition) and it being bought for $500,000. it does not involve the club, and it is gazza's personal endeavours that raise the funds.

costa raised an issue, that no-one will win

the weagles started this with their property deals on a large scale

the tigers attempted to copy this, but it turned out bad for all involed.

It's only a problem for me if we are not one of the top clubs. I'll be happy if the GFC is at the top year after year ad-infinitum. Maybe we just peaked at the right historical moment?
We are certainly the modern benchmark, both on and off the field.
