Richmond's future rests with youngsters like Trent Cotchin
Malcolm Conn From: The Australian May 22, 2010 12:00AM

BLOSSOMING Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin knows all about uphill battles.

It's not just that the winless Tigers face another year on the bottom.

He has been dogged by achilles problems since arriving at Punt Road and has been forced to push cars owned by the club's conditioning staff up an incline in adjoining Yarra Park.

"I started off pushing a little car and finished up pushing a station wagon," Cotchin told The Weekend Australian as Richmond prepared for tonight's special Dreamtime match against Essendon at the MCG, the focal point of the AFL indigenous round.

Any chance barefoot waterskiing could have contributed to his achillies problems?

I think he's on one week at a time on Monday? Or that's what I thought I heard at the end of the game.

We need to get Tuck away from him immediately, the last two weeks he has started taking the Tuck approach of win a clearance and then just kick it long and hope.

Alternatively, this could also be a Campbell hand-me-down. Either way, it's not good.

Good pick-up, think you're on the money, but there are also a lot of variables like players not breaking hard and backing our boys to win it from the middle. Winning the balls the hard part so as long as he keeps doing that the support and polish will hopefully come.

The key for him is to win the ball and break the tackles, when his body fills out this will give him more time and the chance to get into some space to hit up some options.

Not sure of the reason but I agree , certainly has just belted it on the boot from clearances, maybe the theory is instead of given it to a player who just bangs it onto the boot , bang it onto the boot yourself ?

At first I laughed at this, but

Only reason I thought of it was because I'm having a few achillies problems myself at the moment, I think it has to do with Melbourne winter kicking in and too much running - maybe I've got a bit of tendinitis or whatever.

But, after a run I find it tight and painful stretching the affected achillies (toe to shin, if you get what I mean). Barefoot waterskiing puts a lot of pressure on the heel, and I imagine (never having barefoot waterskied before) that keeping your foot locked back in the position for extended periods might stress the tendon??

I'm sure the club has looked into it though, and it's probably not a regular thing the kid does anymore anyway...
