Many blues supporters have came up with a range of ideas for the team to improve based on the playing group. Some you may have heard of these. These are strategies that might help the blues not only now but in the future.
I was considering to put this in the list thread but I thought it would need a little more attention given where the club sits right now. I would like to hear your thoughts on these or any other ideas.
Is Casboult fit for a defender?
Most of us are well aware that Levi can clunk the big ones when it means a lot. But we seem to have an issue when it comes to his kicking. It is certainly frustrating to see him shank the ball out of bounds or just scrape the ball in for 1 behind. But would it hurt us less if he was down back. He is good in the marking contest, his kicking could be more effective down back than up forward.
Can Curnow be a ball winner?
Lately it has been known that the tagging gamestyle is being thrown out the window. Many teams have been praised for witnessing a more attacking sort of performance, most notably in Fremantle without Ryan Crowley and pressumably Collingwood without Brent Macaffer. Now the tagging role is being questioned at Carlton, leaving Curnow's future under pressure. However, the media have been pleased with former tagger Liam Picken's performances with the bulldogs, now digging into the contests and winning hard balls. Is it possible for Ed to do so as well? His athleticism can't be competed at the club and his VFL performances in the past have proven it to be a possibility.
Is Menzel midfield material?
The blues indeed have a lot of midfielders, with a few not completely developed. Could he get in while the getting is good? If so, should he? The Menz has proven himself to be a useful forward for the future and now it seems that a lot believe he could do more. A couple of things he would do of course is add a bit more muscle mass and improve his endurance. But picture it in your head. Can you see Menzel in the centre or do you see him just leading up to the ball? I am struggling to see him as a midfielder, but surely it doesn't say that he can't be one.
Could Foster be the tall forward we are looking for?
Of course it is too early to judge whether he is or is not capable given that he had just arrived at Carlton and no longer overcame an injury. There seems to be little hype around him, but I believe that there is a chance we could see him in the navy blue jumper in our forward 50. Watson seems to be struggling to get a game despite his good efforts in the Northern Blues team. Casboult and Jones are leaving many in discomfort with the form they are providing, and many are starting to question whether Lachie should stay down back. Is it possible for Foster to be a prolific forward player for Carlton?
Is Fields the player who can fill Jamo's shoes?
Jamison is definitely at the twilight stages of his career, given his age and fitness. And the biggest concern would be when he hangs up his boots. Who would replace him? Rowe is not that younger and Jaksch is occasionally questionable. Not long ago Tom Fields spokes to the club about his form and improvement in the VFL. This could be somebody we could use to our advantage. Fields is a defensive player and it could be a good idea to test if he can play right at the very back. Rather than chuck players in and out after 1-2 years, wouldnt it be a good idea to turn what we have ito something greater than what we have expected.
Rowe, Wood, Thomas, Murphy, Simpson etc. Are these players a part of the future?
These players are all above the age of 25 and it won't be long before they reach 30 and start considering whether they should continue on. It would be necessary to draft players as young as possible so their impact at the club can last much longer. But I suppose it is based on whether the players want to continue themselves and become a Fletcher or a Harvey. It is extremely hard to believe this as of now. We have been praising their performances here and there, but if we are talking about re-building, is it good to have so many players approaching 30 at the club? Is it necessary for them to make room for the blues to blood a younger list.
Who is our next captain?
Murphy is now getting scrutinised for his lack of communication and his struggle to meet the expectations given to him. Now with a variety of young and exciting prospects. Who is the next best thing in years to come. Probably leading the race are the likes of Cripps, Menzel, Bell, Docherty, Graham, Buckley and even possibly Whiley. Who knows, it could be someone who isn't at the club yet.
Would these ideas make us better from now and beyond?
