Carlton
Many blues supporters have came up with a range of ideas for the team to improve based on the playing group. Some you may have heard of these. These are strategies that might help the blues not only now but in the future.

I was considering to put this in the list thread but I thought it would need a little more attention given where the club sits right now. I would like to hear your thoughts on these or any other ideas.

Is Casboult fit for a defender?
Most of us are well aware that Levi can clunk the big ones when it means a lot. But we seem to have an issue when it comes to his kicking. It is certainly frustrating to see him shank the ball out of bounds or just scrape the ball in for 1 behind. But would it hurt us less if he was down back. He is good in the marking contest, his kicking could be more effective down back than up forward.

Can Curnow be a ball winner?
Lately it has been known that the tagging gamestyle is being thrown out the window. Many teams have been praised for witnessing a more attacking sort of performance, most notably in Fremantle without Ryan Crowley and pressumably Collingwood without Brent Macaffer. Now the tagging role is being questioned at Carlton, leaving Curnow's future under pressure. However, the media have been pleased with former tagger Liam Picken's performances with the bulldogs, now digging into the contests and winning hard balls. Is it possible for Ed to do so as well? His athleticism can't be competed at the club and his VFL performances in the past have proven it to be a possibility.

Is Menzel midfield material?
The blues indeed have a lot of midfielders, with a few not completely developed. Could he get in while the getting is good? If so, should he? The Menz has proven himself to be a useful forward for the future and now it seems that a lot believe he could do more. A couple of things he would do of course is add a bit more muscle mass and improve his endurance. But picture it in your head. Can you see Menzel in the centre or do you see him just leading up to the ball? I am struggling to see him as a midfielder, but surely it doesn't say that he can't be one.

Could Foster be the tall forward we are looking for?
Of course it is too early to judge whether he is or is not capable given that he had just arrived at Carlton and no longer overcame an injury. There seems to be little hype around him, but I believe that there is a chance we could see him in the navy blue jumper in our forward 50. Watson seems to be struggling to get a game despite his good efforts in the Northern Blues team. Casboult and Jones are leaving many in discomfort with the form they are providing, and many are starting to question whether Lachie should stay down back. Is it possible for Foster to be a prolific forward player for Carlton?

Is Fields the player who can fill Jamo's shoes?
Jamison is definitely at the twilight stages of his career, given his age and fitness. And the biggest concern would be when he hangs up his boots. Who would replace him? Rowe is not that younger and Jaksch is occasionally questionable. Not long ago Tom Fields spokes to the club about his form and improvement in the VFL. This could be somebody we could use to our advantage. Fields is a defensive player and it could be a good idea to test if he can play right at the very back. Rather than chuck players in and out after 1-2 years, wouldnt it be a good idea to turn what we have ito something greater than what we have expected.

Rowe, Wood, Thomas, Murphy, Simpson etc. Are these players a part of the future?
These players are all above the age of 25 and it won't be long before they reach 30 and start considering whether they should continue on. It would be necessary to draft players as young as possible so their impact at the club can last much longer. But I suppose it is based on whether the players want to continue themselves and become a Fletcher or a Harvey. It is extremely hard to believe this as of now. We have been praising their performances here and there, but if we are talking about re-building, is it good to have so many players approaching 30 at the club? Is it necessary for them to make room for the blues to blood a younger list.

Who is our next captain?
Murphy is now getting scrutinised for his lack of communication and his struggle to meet the expectations given to him. Now with a variety of young and exciting prospects. Who is the next best thing in years to come. Probably leading the race are the likes of Cripps, Menzel, Bell, Docherty, Graham, Buckley and even possibly Whiley. Who knows, it could be someone who isn't at the club yet.

Would these ideas make us better from now and beyond?

You could say this is similar to the blues tactics thread, however it is not about how the team plays but where the players are better off, and whether it could benefit us? I would like to hear some thoughts, from the moderators to the first-timers. :D

Is Casboult fit for a defender?

Struggles to kick straight when played as a forward so given his imposing frame, should be trialled at CHB at some stage during the season.

Can Curnow be a ball winner?

I highly doubt it.

Is Menzel midfield material?

Not at all, besides, we need him to become a damaging player across half-forward who contributes 40-50 goals per season every season.

Could Foster be the tall forward we are looking for?

Far too early to say, obviously has some deficiencies in his game hence the reason why he was picked up so late in the draft. Best to revisit this thought in 12-months time.

Is Fields the player who can fill Jamo's shoes?

Same as Foster, just too early to say especially as he was picked up in the rookie draft. Best to revisit in 12-months time when a more accurate picture should have been painted.

Rowe, Wood, Thomas, Murphy, Simpson etc. Are these players a part of the future?

Only the immediate future, 2-3 years maximum.

Who is our next captain?

Assuming Murphy doesn't get traded at the end of the season and he plays for another 3-years, you would expect him to remain as captain during this time also. So you would be looking at 2019 for a changeover of team-leader which would bring into play Cripps & Docherty who would be 23yo & 25yo respectively.

Curnow should be tapped on the shoulder at season's end .. If we're serious about a total rebuild, then the likes of Curnow, stalwart as he has been, have to be phased out and kids with a higher skill level bought in.

Totally agree, Menzel could become a fwd-mid...

I like the thread. One part tactics, one part players out of position, one part list. Equals three part ponderable hypotheticals...

Menzel needs to look at Steve Johnson for ideas on how to be a damaging forward that is handy through the midfield.

Curnow needs retraining in the VFL to see if he can become attacking, needs to work with Carrpts who turned himself into an accumulating tagger.

Casboult needs to play as a ruck/forward as his goal kicking is the only reason he is not the best at this role behind Roughead.

These are the ones that can be worked on to get results right now, the rest is just speculation.

ferrisb agreed Menzel should concentrate on being the best HFF he can be.
At present we do not need him in the middle and we need to see improved application in that area before he is granted automatic selection each week.

Is Casboult fit for a defender?
If Kruezer gets continuity in his career then I would see him pairing with Cas to be our Ruck / Forward combo.
I believe that Cas should be give a roving commission that does not commit him to a KPP

Who is our next captain?
Sam Docherty, Patrick Cripps or Left field option. Do not see Menzel/Bell as captain material.

Is Casboult fit for a defender?
No. His only strong attribute is marking, why move him to a position where he'll often have to punch it instead? Jones has the same kicking deficiencies as Cas and is a (much) worse mark, but is quicker and more agile. Turn Jones into a backman, use Cas as a hit-up target outside the 50m arc.

Can Curnow be a ball winner?
He could be, but his disposal is so poor it may not be to our advantage. Clubs used to play wide of Carrazzo so they'd have an extra midfielder up their sleeve while he'd rack up touches and turnovers. They'd do the same again with Curnow.

Is Menzel midfield material?
Highly doubt it, just looks a natural forward rather than a midfielder. Half forward is about as high up the ground as he'll get.

Could Foster be the tall forward we are looking for?
Maybe in 2-3 years.

Is Fields the player who can fill Jamo's shoes?
Not qualified to comment.

Rowe, Wood, Thomas, Murphy, Simpson etc. Are these players a part of the future?
No, no, yes, yes, no. If we nail this year's draft we'll have a good injection of talent coming in who will be in their second or third years when these guys are turning 30. We'll need them around.

Who is our next captain?
Cripps

I very much like the idea of trialling Casboult as a CHB. He can dish off the ball once he clunks the mark to a better kicker, and at least we have a formidable presence in the backline.

Is Casboult fit for a defender?
I don't think so. Although his field kicking seems better than his goal kicking, I'm a believer that defenders in the modern game should be excellent kicks. I would actually prefer him to be a full-time follower/ruckman
Can Curnow be a ball winner?
I don't think he's really shown that he can on enough occasions, but perhaps his role has limited this. I am more concerned with what he does with it when he gets it. I don't thik he's developed as we all would have liked.
Is Menzel midfield material?
Maybe in the Steve Johnson mould, but there's nothing wrong with making himself into a champion half-forward a la Wayne Johnston.
Could Foster be the tall forward we are looking for?
Hope so. Don't know enough.
Is Fields the player who can fill Jamo's shoes?
Don't know, but we'll need to find someone soon.
Rowe, Wood, Thomas, Murphy, Simpson etc. Are these players a part of the future?
No, no, yes, yes, no. Murphy and Thomas, injury allowing, could still be around to see our next finals tilt.
Who is our next captain?

Cripps AND Doc.

He would continually get beat on the lead from the goal square and would be taken up the ground and lose his man on the way back because he has a turning circle which could nearly rival Watson's.

There is no way Casboult could defend 1 on 1, he would get exploited regularly by good agile forwards and smart coaches.

This suggestion would be out of place in the GC/BC thread as it is a ridiculous call.....

Curnow came to Carlton as an inside midfielder ball winner from Box Hill.

Check out his highlights on youtube which the club put up when we drafted him.

Is Kristmas Jaksch the answer at CHF if you believe as I do, that Lachie Henderson won't be at the club next season ?? (nothing concrete yet, but all signs seems to be pointing that way)

We need Casboult at CHF, big presence further up the field strong mark, and a little further from goal to take pressure of goal kicking.

Right now with Jamo out, we need Casboult down back, young Kristmas and Rowe need another tall for support
