Fell asleep during the game ..great to get the win as expected.

Really impressed and joyed by the young players coming through.

Frank Evans another good game with 3 goals 👌👌

Frank and Haynes have been good gets for us!
Agree Ag.

That hit by May on Evans and concussion meant he had to miss a game …..may end up costing Frankie a Brownlow. 😀

Seriously, he’s the right type of small forward we need - can bring pressure, good decision making and very good kicking action. Kudos to Nick Austin or Voss and whoever else wants to take credit for his recruitment..

Yup Frankie has surpassed Fantasia , Durdin, Fogarty and Motlop.
Austin has much to do, a good list clean out and refresh is necessary.
Most important salary cap management needs to be adjusted urgently with more skill and quality added to the list.
He’s also become a good replacement for Owies.

I think it also triggered him into believing he can football. Thanks May. :p

Or Cripps has just had his body smashed for the last 24 weeks......maybe give the champ a break.
He has had his body smashed for years, I reckon he has earned some time in a less physically demanding role where he's not battered continuously. He can still be a weapon for us, alternating between forward and midfield.

Maybe all that was needed was for Frankie to feel loved. He achieved it that night.
He was already playing well before that. It was a steady improvement over time. Self-belief is a wonderful thing; let's hope that he now truly believes in himself and keeps performing well for us.

Fantasia, Durdin and Fog need to be upgraded. Big time.

Frankie won himself a contract last night (if he hadn't already previously)...

White, Young WIPs...

Mots showing a bit. Needs to get crazily, scarily fit in the off season....
Motlop averaged a career best season for disposals, added 1.2 tackles to his previous best (2.4 to 3.6), career best in goal assists & score involvements, double his previous best in clearances (0.7 to 1.4) and while he was down in goals his combined scoring shots was an equal career high.

He is tracking ok and after another pre-season should be able to spend more time in the middle

Not really. Played against the Pies. Had a quite game and then was dropped for the Lions. Recalled after Orazio pinged his hammy. Had 8 possessions and a goal (2nd for the season) against Melbourne so wasn't amazing but won respect.

It doesn't take much to win the hearts of Carlton supports. 1 goal for Jack Newnes and shutting down Sicily while getting under his skin for Jed Lamb.

Agreed

I also think we used him more and more as tge season progressed.

As one example I recall him being burnt whilst all by himself 20 m out directly in front of goals.

Probably took time for his team mates and our game style tweaks to make better use of him as well.

His teammates started to trust him

Agreed.

For preseason I Reckon he needs to focus on goal kicking technique for set shots and also scenario based shots whilst on the go.

That's what I was thinking. He brings serious pace to the midfield and was very good after the inside boys had done their job and got it to him. A couple of clangers over the course of the game, but it was that sort of night for everyone.

Needs to trim down over the summer loose a few kg's. Too heavy in the legs. Bit like Weitering. Needs to get more mobile.

perhaps a few of the team can spend the off-season getting knocked out by steven may. thinking durdin mostly.
shame... durdin has a lot of what we need through the middle but not quite putting it together. last chance saloon next year.

adios tdk. i'm not angry, i'm worried for you. a season like this year but on that coin will not be a good thing for you.

good finish to the year. enjoy the off-season and then put your heads down and bums up.

I’m worried for durds. Really want him to make it. But after this season, he may not be here next year imo

Essendon aren't much good but I thought our forward setup was ok and we showed signs of how we want to play and what we can do.

We've made efforts to change our game plan to a modern one in the second half of the season. It's starting to show but it is going to take some effort before we can match the better sides. Spend the preseason focusing on this and training for it and we should get better. Skill and pace being the key to unlocking this.

Change in game plan is going to change the shape of the list. The big heavy contested players are going to need to be able to run and kick to survive. Those who can't run and kick have got by in a side with an outdated game plan, they will be gone.

I like this, the footy I have seen us play in the last month, first time I have felt content with Voss and his team, but it's a small step forward and our list is still suffering from recruiting for our old game plan. It's going to come down to how quickly we can undo that.

We went in without Fogarty and the world didn't implode. I thought our smaller forwards stood up well. The group were better kicks and not too slow. Those who can run and kick and read the game well really elevated us. Going more direct will support them more.

Sam Walsh, well you add one quicker mid into the side and it turns us right around. If we can add another two or three then look out, Carlton will be right back in this.

Motlop, Young, Evans, Williams, Durdin, Moir and White worked fine as a small forward group. Going forward we will want to see this group improve and upgraded on but for now there are preminant and good back up players there. McKay finishes the season in career best form so excited for him next year. O'Keefe can hold his ground at AFL level and compete. Next step is holding more of those marks and improving kicking but he is a solid young player.

Haynes. If we did not recruite him this would have been a dysmal season. He was one player who was playing out of his skin when we were going really bad and apart from the first few games, has been excellent. Moving him to a wing as been an inspiring choice.

Our defence, the youth we have added has been great. Wilson has a breakout game, he runs with the ball and he kicks well. He actually got to a point in the VFL where he stopped developing and needed to get into the AFL side to develop further, as did a lot of our youth which is great for us. Carroll is another who has pace and is an excellent kick. Saad started to find a bit of form late. Hollands has been getting a lot of it and has improved. His kicking has been up and down but it is getting better. Cowan is another who has really matured and is another player who can run and kick.

I don't think we should be afraid of this minirebuild. I think we will be competitive or better.

In an ideal world we go into next season with Smith fit, Curnow fit, get Kemp back and recruite a really good modern style onballer, maybe we can land Butters or someone like that and we are right back in this getting into the 8 and tapping on the door of the top 4.
