With Cousins' future now in limbo, is there a tiny possibility the Dees may make a play for him with say the last pick of the national draft or PSD?
I am hoping he gets another chance to play AFL and originally ruled us out completely, but I must admit maybe it might be worth more consideration.

PROS:
  • He would be desperate for ANY chance to play AFL footy and would love the club that picks him up for giving him that chance.
  • He would be desperate to prove his doubters wrong.
  • Being the first tagged every week would be a god-send for Brock, Jones etc.
  • He would show our youngsters exactly how to train hard and push themselves to the limit every training session.
  • He would give the club a lot of media exposure (positive).
  • Would come at very little expense (salary-wise and draft-pick wise)
CONS
  • Only two or three years service at best
  • Injury concerns
  • He would give the club a lot of media exposure (negative)
  • IF he's still up to his old tricks he would be a bad example to our kids.
So what do others think? Would he be a better option than a kid at pick 76?
There's a lot of factors in giving it a yes/no but just trying to see what others think....

yea its a tough 1 maybe would be a better pick at 76 and i would love him at the club but if he falls of the horse we would get negative press which is not what we need and as we are looking 4 a new sponsor drafting ben cousins may make it harder to get the sponsor we want i agree with him showing the young kids the hard running that it takes as ben busts his gut every time he is on the field so i dont know i guess we need 2 stick with youth he really doesnt suit our needs at this time

In my opinion just leave him and draft a young player. Like you said Cousins is only servicable for what, 2-3 years? We need a midfielder that will stay around for about 5-12 years and be gun in process of his career. In the meanwhile just relax and see or hear what will transpire on Saturday 29 of November.

I'd take him with our last pick of the ND unless there was a bottom ager(Shiels, Rounds) who was there that we were looking at.
Look at the amount of exposure Carlton got in taking Kreuzer + Judd, and how that affected their memberships during the year.
I'd think we would get similar exposure and hopefully it would help boost memberships.
Also I think the 2-3 years service is a plus, in 2-3 years we will be struggling to find people to get rid of, as we are really lacking in that 24-28 range.
Bruce, Green, Mcdonald, Robbo, Whelan, Wheatley are the potential retiree's for the next 2-3 years, a few of them will probably go on longer than that, after these guys there will be no-one retiring due to age.
Having Cousins on the list kind of serves as a transition player where he will just retire, instead of potentially having to make a tough choice between two kids who could potentially come good.

The main reason I don't think we will go for Cousin's is because we let White and Yze go saying they were basically too old.
So I don't think the club would do a back flip and draft a 30 year old.

Having said that I would love to see him in a Melbourne jumper

Nobody's too old if they're still good. Didn't apply to Yze and White.

Well when a club says its going with a youth policy I normally assume that means they are looking for youth.

With White he was still 5,000 time better than the dud Jamar we kept

Cousins is still 5,000 times better than White.

And Jamar's work in the centre >>> White's this year, White was only better around the ground, and wasn't even fantastic at that.

Hi guys, sorry to invade. Hoping you can explain your opinion as supporters on this.

Along with Cousins and his work ethic, any club that drafted him will get the inevitable media attention as well. Most will be the morbid curiousity of reporting when he trains, eats, farts, etc, some is likely to be positive 'feelgood story' stuff - but there is of course the chance of negative attention if he misbehaves in any way.

My question is, for a club like Melbourne who is struggling to attract members & viewers, wouldn't this be a good thing?
I don't mean to troll asking that.. it is sort of what I expected to see in this thread but I was surprised to see that wasn't the case.

No.

You can debate it as much as you can like, but we all know Bailey and co. aren't interested. We're struggling to find a sponsor as it is, taking Benny would be the final straw.

Its Brisbane or zilch for Benny.

Gold star sticker for BC. Brisbane & someone else's sponsor have said they wouldn't be happy if they picked up Cousins, so it doesn't seem like a good idea for us to give potential sponsor another reason to say no to us.

But if we get a sponsor and they don't care or encourage it, then i say go for it. I'll even buy a new jumper & put his number on it...

Pick one in the PSD - i'd take him. Doesn't seem like there would be much better options anyway, give us ssomething to look forward to.

Guys , remember that Dees are only paying 92.5% of the alloted salary cap and to put it simply, we couldn't afford Cousins even if we wanted him.
I agree in principle with the idea not to draft him.

However, even though I don't have the proof to back this claim up, I'm sure Ben would play on base salary next if he got drafted (so no more than any other draftee would cost).

Cousins won't be on base payments, they've changed the rules so that you can nominate a price in the national draft, just like the PSD. I couldn't see Cousins asking for massive money, so it might not be an issue.
