Are you referring to the heavy metal version that came out about 1970 or 1971? ... that was by the Australian band, the Zoot, which included Darryl Cotton and Rick Springfield. They were better known as a bubble-gum pop band, but they went through a sort of heavy metal phase. I actually think the Beatles' original is in a class of its own, but the Zoot certainly did a great job of completely reinventing it.

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE:
As for "You'll Never Walk Alone" ... it was from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical, called "Carousel" in the early 50s. Gerry and the Pacemakers did the best known version of it, which was a hit about 1963, and it was around that time that the Liverpool supporters started singing it on the Kop. Gerry and the Pacemakers were a Liverpool band. They were almost as big as the Beatles at one stage. Gerry Marsden became a Liverpool icon. He had another great song called "Ferry Across the Mersey", which is also synonymous with Liverpool.

As much as I love Gerry and the Pacemakers version of "You'll Never Walk Alone", the greatest version of the song was the one that used to reverberate around Anfield in the golden era of the Reds in the 70s and 80s.

It has also been "covered" recently by the Collingwood Cheer Squad ... but I'd have to say, our version needs a bit of work. :)
 
Can a cover version be better than the original?

Not forgetting that without the original then a cover song doesn't exist....it's hard to say a cover version is better than the original. They might soup it up & make it sound more modern or whatever, but the fact remains that you're giving the house a different coat of paint.

It's a pisstake. I love the original, but Thom Yorke's version was taking the urine, and anyone who thinks Yorke should be shot, well, the bullet should go their way.

Without Radiohead, Oasis wouldn't be half the band they are. And I like Oasis.

*Chapel of Love - from their 1976 album "15 Big Ones" it's THE best version ever. :D

*I Can Hear Music from their 1969 album "20/20" Outstanding cover. Spector, eat your heart out. Carl Wilson's arrangement is sensational. :cool:

*California Dreamin a single from the 80's. It's just better. :D

Don't know if it is or not ...I was just joking that the whole sentence has GOT to be WRONG!

An 80's cover of the M's & the P's would have to be wrong wrong wrong ...but since it's the Beach Boys harmonizing I'll let it slide.

But now that you're here...do you see anything pecular in the first post? I thought that geneticall by birth everyone knew every Beatles song but....???? They've stumped me.

Several hard rock/heavy metal bands have done albums of covers, and on the whole they are very good, despite the unoriginal concept and material. Maybe the reason the covers work so well, is that they are usually from non-heavy metal originals, and the heavier tunes are 20-30 years old and modern technology adds a lot to the new sound.

Yngwie Malmsteen, Helloween, Metallica, Anthrax, Blind Guardian, Megadeth and to a lesser extent Judas Priest and Gamma Ray, are all fairly well known in heavy metal circles for doing some brilliant covers, and the first three I mentioned have all done full albums of covers.

Many bands also have their original stuff covered in tribute albums, with many noted hard & heavy artist cointributing some very good versions of old classics. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are bands whose tribute albums have been really good.

One absolutely superb cover that very few people know IS a cover, is Carlos Santana's Black Magic Woman.
It's pretty much his signature tune, but Peter Green wrote and recorded it, but I'm not sure if it was during his years in an early line-up of Fleetwood Mac.
 
Have to agree with Macca on the Fear Factory ver of Dog Day Sunrise, it rocks (hell, I didn't even realise it was a cover :D ). Course FF are just plain awesome with just about everything they do.

I like both bands.

Apart from the song "Metal Health", I treckon Quiet Riot's two best other songs were their two Slade covers (Mama Weer All Crazee Now & Cum On Feel The Noize). The covers were pretty much carbon copies, and Kevin DuBrow does have a similar voice to Noddy Holder.

It almost sounded like it was the same band, and it had been re-recorded 10 years later with some more techonology and better production. I mean, Quiet Riot were hardly adventurous in their interpretation of the two Slade songs.

Do you think that when you see an orchestra play - say - Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 you would be saying: "Sure this is good, but it still ain't as good as the original!"?

At an abstract level, music is something that is written, then interpreted by musicians. It can be reinterpreted over and over again. The interpretations can lead to different arrangements with completely different sounds.

How, for instance, are you able to compare Split Enz's original versions of their songs with those performed by the NZ Symphony Orchestra? Same true for Metallica and S & M.

My view is that the orchestra peformed versions added so much depth to the sound that they were beyond compare!

What I would really love to hear is Tool taken up by an orchestra. Now that would be stunning!

Ok let me put this into context- I prefer Vanishing Points version of Pink Floyds song "On the Turning Away" better to the original version, but I also understand that without the original there would not be a cover version.

Songwriting is not an easy science & for someone to put their heart & soul into a song is one thing- but for another band to rock up, take it for what it is & from a combination of better production, or slight modifications to the original - & say it is better, is hard to accept for me.

You can have a preference, but I am more sided with the song writers here....they've actually written the damn thing...

I see where you're coming from entirely, but my preferences tend to lie at about 50-50.

For instance Anthrax's "Got The Time" is frenetic and angry, an emotion lacking in Joe Jackson's fairly bland original. Santana did a lot more with "Black Magic Woman" than Peter Green because his own interpretation was imaginative and suited his guitar playing. Hendrix also crafted "...Watchtower" to suit his style.

Uli Jon Roth's guitar playing on "Voodoo Chile" is superior to Hendrix's original IMHO (*prepares for gunfire from all directions*), and the heavy blues instrumental version by Kenny Wayne Shepherd is also better than the orignal I reckon.

Some covers are so imaginatively re-worked, it's almost as if they have been composed from scratch and borrowed a few bits from another song (the original).

"Got The Time" had this feel, Van Halen added a great intro to Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman", and as I previously mentioned, Deep Purple added something pretty radical to "Hey Joe", practically supplementing the original with the band's own 2-3 minute composition in the intro.

Uli Jon Roth (with Klaus Meine on vocals) has done so with "Nessun Dorma", incorporating a widdly-widdly solo and ending which is absolutely breathtaking. Who needs The Three Tenors when you've got a spaced out hippy fruit loop playing a 7 string, 30 fret guitar, and a 55 year old German dwarf in a stupid leather cap!

I think the best way to listen to covers is with an open mind, and to judge it on its merits. Enjoy one, both, or neither.

Guns n Roses do very good covers. Live and Let Die is good as well

I've downloaded another cover of Wonderwall, done by Lars Ulrich. Hes messing around making fun of it, but I like it coz he's a legend and Oasis are his favourite band

As for Radiohead, they're very ordinary. Their not in the same league as Oasis.

Sheryl Crows murdering was awful, but compared to the All Saints Under the Bridge cover it was brilliant. That was revolting
