coverting to a mpeg file

hey guys i have a video clip and it is in a .dat file format. i was wondering if anyone knew how to convert this into a .mpeg file format?

What about from an avi to a mpeg?

You could try Herosoft video converter. The problem I find with this and other converters is getting the sound to be in sync.
