The Richmond Football Club is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing today of John Ilhan.
“John was a passionate supporter and member of the Club. He was a regular attendee at our games and functions and was always willing to assist his beloved Tigers in whatever way he could,” said Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright.
His devotion to the Yellow and Black cause extended to a valuable sponsorship through his company Crazy John’s.”
John’s enthusiasm and energy around the Club will be sadly missed by us all.“On behalf of the Club’s directors, players, coaches, officials, staff, and all Tiger supporters, we extend our deepest sympathy to John’s family, friends and the staff at Crazy John’s.

Many condolences to his family, especially his poor kids.

But he was never a Richmond saviour, and was never going to be. Not going to pretend he gave his all to the club, because he didn't. As mentioned earler, this is still a football forum, let's not be hypocrtitical.

This is unbelievable. Only last night he was on today tonight and they were showing a documentary about his life and how he built his fortune. His poor wife would be absolutely gutted. 18 month old kid too.

Condolences to the family.

Im sure 300mil will soothe her sorrow

Many condolences to his wife, kids and the rest of his family.

A true passionate supporter of the RFC, he will be missed.

Four kids, including an 8-month-old.
Who cares if he left any money to the club. Some things are more important in life.

In complete agreement tugga ... some things are more important than the RFC, sincere condolences to his wife and 4 children.

Rest in peace, Tiger-Brother. I respect your personal success and public support of our club.

Won't speak ill of the dead, however, a bit of perspective...

I hope we give as grand a send off every time the average RFC supporter passes away in tragic circumstances, who gave a significant part of his or her basic wage to be a member or supporter of our club, and bled yellow & black, and stuggled on public transport to get to just about every game, and who defended the club when other club supporters gave our club sh*t, and who invested so much emotional energy and a piece of their soul for our underacheiving club over the last 20 years or more.

I wonder if the man gave an equal percentage of his time, money and soul to the club as the average Richmond fanatic out there. Money shouldn't always equal respect.

If he didn't have money nobody would even know he died.

Money was the only reason we know about him and also by constantly hinting at giving Richmond loads of cash.

It isn't unreasonable to talk about the thing that got our attention in the first place. When he was alive I only cared about his money (that's why I listened to him) and now that he's dead I do feel sympathy for his family, but I also still care about the money he kept promising us.

Imagine if he left 10 million dollars for us. I wonder if it is possible...

He was only 42 years old, he was still thinking he had another 40-50 years to go, most people don't start with clubs until their later years - look at Richard Pratt - He would have eventually become our President and donated plenty of money.

Now the future is looking relatively bleak as to who will be our next President.

R.I.P. JOHN ILHAN.

I met him a fair few times when I acted for a financier of Crazy John's. Pretty laid back bloke and his boardroom was filled with jumpers - each with the Crazy John's logo.

I asked him once who he actually supported (this was about 5 years ago) and he spoke of his deep passion for the Tigers and also his unending frustration that they just could not get their heads around the nature of modern day sports sponsorships.

Casey et al would (eventually) meet with him and basically be looking for a massive philanthropic gesture whereas John, Tiger fan though he was, needed a commercial incentive - such as working on a cross-promotion of CJ's services to other corporate supporters and members which Richmond couldn't grasp - think how enticing some cold hard support would have been had we "arranged" RACV's telecommunications guy to get together with CJ's...

Much as I dislike him, Eddie completely understood and I can see John sitting there and saying (rather wistfully) "nothing's too much trouble for him - if I have an idea that'll help both his club and my business Eddie will be here the same day I ring him - but I rang Richmond and didn't hear from them for months".

I'm sure he would have eventually assisted Richmond in a significant way, but (perhaps understandably) he was focused on self-promotion and furthering his business, and when the chance was here to leverage off his acumen and financial capabilities on a commercial basis, we blew it and stayed with the luggage that was the TAC...

A lost opportunity for Richmond. Big time.

Crazy John

A great businessman. A passionate Richmond supporter.

Condolences to his family and friends.

R.I.P.

Money shouldn't always equal respect.

Never has and never will in my mind.

Sure he worked his ass off for 20 years building a fortune, but what use is that to him now? Im not privy to his life and ways, but doesnt take a leap of faith to think that maybe the building of the fortune is a likely suspect in his death.

Having said that it's sad to die so young and leave a family fatherless.

R.I.P. to a successful businessman and promoter.
