I must have got my head around the decline of the Aussie side as now I'm watching with interest how the rebuilding process is going. I think we're a long way off a return to the top but there are some interesting developments taking place:

* Shaun Marsh has obviously been the good news story out of the Sri Lanka. May well be one of those types that needs the pressure and intensity of international cricket because his first class performances are less than, well, first class. Will be interesting to see if he can keep it going against better attacks.

* Copeland will be a better prospect on more bowler friendly decks (if that ever occurs in the drop in pitch era). However, it will be interesting to see if the selectors keep picking a genuine medium pace bowler who'd be more at home in the NZ lineup. They'd love for a Hazlewood type who is just as accurate, quicker, bouncier but just can't keep fit.

* Watson looks better and better as a bowler.....and a little flighty as a batsman, particularly once set. Still searching for that all-rounder balance.

* Lyon has looked OK in my opinion. No world beater but if he was in a side with 3 genuinely world class quicks, he'd be a very good foil. In subcontinental conditions, he needs more penetration in his game.

* I have always been a rap for Siddle so am pleased he's performed in this test but you'd have to question Johnson's spot in the side. 9 days out of 10, I'd have Siddle before Johnson. Of course, the 10th day is what seduces everyone but it is too rare that Johnson gets it right. I'd give him the South African tour to get perform or its time to move on. Siddle is the ideal 3rd seamer IMO. Runs in all day. When he gets his length right, he asks questions all the time.

* Gotta be significant question marks on Haddin's future. His keeping has been OK at best and he's not making runs. Paine is the annointed successor but I'd love to see the selectors make it clear that every State keeper is in the running. Whoever is tidy behind the stumps and makes the most runs, wins. Guys like Wade should not be ruled out because they aren't on a central contract. I quite like Paine but he should be picked on the back of a mountain of runs for Tassie, which he is capable of.

Phillip Hughes. I know he just got us out of trouble yesterday but that was his first 100 in 2 years. Insane that he keeps getting the call up.

IMO, he has something there worth giving an extended go to.

While you are right about the fact it was his first ton in two years, he spent an extended period on the outer, and I felt he was dropped a little quick which wouldn't have helped a 20 year old's confidence.

His form in the last 6 months has been very solid. Nearly a century in both innings o the Shield Final as well as two or three centuries for Australia A against South Africa and Zimbabwe.

When in full flight, he is exciting to watch, when not, well, best hope he who bats at three is in form :-)

By rights, with his style of batting, Hughes should struggle in South Africa against a good pace attack and pitches which offer some assistance to the quicks. But SA is where he experienced his best form, albeit before he'd been worked out by international attacks. It will be interesting to see how he goes over there in the 3 longer form games that the Aussies will play.

Unfortunately, a century on the SSC pitch isn't worth much in terms of solidifying a spot. Before the last test, I thought that we should persevere with Hughes until the end of the NZ series. If he hadn't secured his spot after another 4 Tests (both home and away), then it might be time to re-consider things. I don't see any reason to change that on the back of that last performance. The last performance relieves the pressure on him, but doesn't change the fact that he needs runs to keep his spot.

The fact is, this guy is 22yo and has now been in the international mix for 2 years. The last dasher to debut at the top of the order was probably Michael Slater. Slats was 23 when he debuted. Clearly, at 23, you know your game better. Hughes has been forced to learn his game in the full spotlight. I am seeing signs that he is slowly working things out.

One thing about Hughes (and similarly for guys like Lyon) is that they should be playing as much 4 or 5 day cricket as possible in the next two years. Even if they are established in the Test squad, I'd send them on A tours, make them available for Shield matches, even send them to county cricket. These guys need to be taught how to play the longer form of the game, rather than play 2 Test series here and there, interspersed with meaningless ODIs and T20 matches.

"Here is your blue cap and here is your baggy green one. That oughta save us some time."

Some would argue that's already the current selection process and has been for years...

Those people would be flat out wrong as well. Look at O'keefe, best spinner in the country but still not picked and he is from NSW

Am sure there are a couple of examples, as that one, whereby the theory doesn't hold water but I think it'd hold more water than it leaked over the last 10-15 years.

Quite clearly, NSW has the best development paths in the country.

Quite clearly, if his commentary is anything to go by, Geoff Lawson, as an optometrist, made himself a pair of blue tinted glasses some time ago. He is as biased towards NSW players as they come.

The case on whether NSW players have had an inside running on Australian selection is arguable. I think it is more likely to be the case that NSW just produces better players.

However, I would suggest that the big issue is that Lawson will be perceived to be biased. This is not only because of his state, but because he is known as being one-eyed to the point of stupidity. It would be like putting Choppy Close in charge of selecting an Australian league side and wondering why NSW supporters were upset.
