Now 5 for 349. Head out for 130, Cooper 87 not out. The big challenge tomorrow for our bowlers will be to get through the defences of Cameron White, which virtually nobody has done this season. The guy is in career best form - if it continues, he must surely come into contention for the tour of India.

White will be almost 34 by the time the tour of India starts so on that basis alone he must have a good chance to make the tour. ;)

Good form or not you would have to hope that the days of reinstating 34 year olds is behind us.
White's last Test for Australia was back in 2008 in India and he batted at no 8 and made 46 and 26 but only bowled a dozen overs in the entire match. Ponting's use of his bowlers was questioned after this match.

I guess it depends on how sound his body is, as to how long he remains in the game. If he's feeling good, perhaps he can play till he's 38: assuming his form with the bat continues, maybe he stiĺl has time to make a decent contribution to Australian cricket. Put it this way - he couldn't have done any worse than Maddinson in this game.

I do not doubt White could do better than Maddison but the problem for Australia in recent times is we have had to make too many changes due to retirements. Guys like Rogers, Voges, Haddin and to a lesser extent Mike Hussey were that old when they got the nod that they had only three or four seasons at Test level before they pulled the pin. Add this to the inevitable retirements of longer term players like Clarke, Harris, Johnson and Watson and we are always looking for replacements. The one plus for the current selectors is they have gone for youth in this Test.

If White was selected and succeeded and played until he was 38 we would have to find a replacement in four years. In the meantime any young prospects we have are four years older.

Fair enough: I get that. But maybe a bit of experience might be of assistance at the moment. Obviously if a young guy is ready for Test cricket now, you play him. But perhaps Smith could use an old head in the short term.

I would be inclined to drop Smith back to no5 where he has had most success, This would leave Warner to open, Khwaja at No3 and Smith at 5 with the young guys either side of them. The general consensus is that Voges will not return but I would not be surprised if he does. Australia probably has to absorb some short term pain in order to get long term gain out of this. Matthew Wade is still a question with the gloves but he has had some fighting knocks as a batsman so his inclusion at the expense of Nevill should help our batting.

I have actually been pleasantly surprised at the emergence of three or four good batting prospects over the past year. The three in this Test plus South Australia's Lehmann, Head, Weatherall and Kyle Patterson from NSW all look promising so surely we can score a couple of Test players from that list?

The only downer for me is that Nevill got 175 no and Henriques 115 against Tassie. Hopefully these two will not push past those in the current Test.

Yeah we're only 12 months away from the next Ashes series, and it's anybody's guess as to what our team for that First Test will look like. There's plenty of cricket between now and then: maybe if one or more youngsters put their name(s) up in lights on the tour of India, they'll be a strong chance to make their Ashes debut. If the can succeed in India, they can succeed anywhere.

Renshaw reminds me of that England player Chris Tavaré, who would spend a long time at the crease & hardly score any runs

Renshaw is a 20 year old playing in his first test so we should not be too quick to judge. As Ian Chappell says he needs to adjust his foot movement so he can score on the off side. He squares up too quickly.

Yeah he's slow, but the guy didn't get out. I'd much rather a reincarnation of Geoff Boycott at the top of the order, as opposed to seeing Australia losing early wickets. I reckon the game was effectively won on Thursday night, when Renshaw and Khawaja simply refused to get out. The psychological advantage gained from that can't be underestimated. Well done boys.

Nothing changes: they tease fans for a little while, and then normal service is resumed.

Oh well - maybe Sayers and Mennie can give us a chance before stumps. At least 3 wickets tonight please!!!

Who cares about a women's T20, right? Normally I'd agree, but today's scorecard between Nepal and Sri Lanka was pretty remarkable. Nepal batted first, and they were doing OK at 1 for 19. But then they lost 9 for 4 to be humiliated for 23. The openers scored 20 (16 & 4), and there were 2 sundries. So the other 9 scored 1 between them - Old McDonald never had that many ducks on his farm :-)

My first competitive game in primary school we made 31 then got the oppo out for 17. Did it easy
