macca23, I am interested in your opinion of Stenglein trade :). Tell us what you think

I honestly think we did very well. Leaving Thompson out of the equation we got WCE's 1st and 2nd round picks which is light years ahead of the 2nd round draft picks or broken down nobodies their supporters thought we'd get.

Most of our supporters thought their 1st round draft pick alone was a fair thing, although some of us would have settled for Beau Waters who unfortunately wasn't on the menu.

So we ended up with Thomson instead of the first round draft pick or Waters plus pick 28.

IMO we did very well - we need attacking mid-fielders not defensive ones.

Yeah it was a pretty good trade.

I am happy we got Thompson as he is capable of being a genuine replacement for Kane Johnson. At 21 and 40 games of AFL experience you would think that he is on the verge of cracking it as a genuine inside midfielder that we need. He does have a big upside and I think down the track (injuries permitting) we would win this trade.

this goes back to what I was saying before and the expectations of the next 2 years

As I have said before, I would rather hover around 12-14 for the next 2 years and look to build a top 4 side for the future, rather than finish between 7-10th.
I can cope with 2-3 lean years as long as we are building a quality side.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Basically the AFC is saying that the only people responsible for such a bad season is Gary Ayers and James Gallagher!! As theirs heads are the only ones that pay the price for inept performances! Not Happy Jan!!

You also have to throw in Mickan, Jarman, Curran and Campbell into the casualties of this year. Although, I reckon John reid is very lucky to be keeping his job.

Next year we'll delist alot more and try to get more draft pciks i reckon

Bloody hell, if you look at our list there is at least another 6 who could have been given the flick without a second thought.

It's time to stand and deliver Mr Ladhams, Bock, Massie, Birdman, Doughty, Begley, Bode, Perrie, Schuie, Skip, Shirley and the Stevens brothers.

By the way, why would the AFC recently sign both Shirley and Doughty to a 2 year contract??? Did their form this year warrant a further 2 years, 1 year I can live with.

He is past being on the verge, have watched two Melbourne games on Foxtel recently and Thompson is a class act already - certainly up in the best players on the ground.

His tackling, chasing and coolness under pressure is fantastic. He is twice the player Stinger was, but you already know my opinion of him ;), he is a quicker version of Kane Johnson.

Has that been confirmed?

True but he is yet to play close to full season and hence he is on the verge:p

We need the Kane Johnson type now more than ever before

Doughty definately has. I heard on here Shirley had.
So if M.Stevens does not retire and there is a player at 5 in the PS draft we want, who do we delist who is not on contract.

Or do we give up the valuable pick 5 in the PS draft and not use it

We will ude picks 8, 24, 28 and 40 in the National Draft and we will leave one selection for the pre-season draft..

Which ever way you look at it my predictions of who will get delisted and how many picks we have has been confirmed by John Reid earlier this week

No advanced knowledge to improve your prediction Stiffy ;)

That was from me. His auntie told me back in early August that he had been re-signed for 2 years. People were so sceptical that I started to doubt my own ears so I re-checked with her and she was adamant that was in fact the case.

If my memory serves me correctly he may have even been re-signed just before Ayres got the flick.

Somebody loves him. ;)

:(

I guess we know who our tagger will be next year. He is probably the best choice.

Interesting that this time last year a lot of people had him in their best 22 and this year they want him delisted:p

Shirley in their best 22. C'mon, surely your having a laugh. If the guy wasn't a tagger, an average one at that, he wouldn't be in our best 40. Where did they have Bock, at CHF and Dabrowski on a wing.

Actually, maybe he is in our best 40. Gives you an idea of what our list is like.

At the end of 2003 season we had a thread about the best side. I was perplexed to see how many people had Shirley in the best 22. They were thinking he can take over Bickley's spot in the midfield

Hand goes up :)

Actually thought Shirley had a pretty good year in 03 as a tagger & even had a better 2nd half of the year than Stenglein.

Now that Stenglein has gone it does make sense to keep Shirley on the list & see if he can improve on last years form under a new coach in Neil Craig, & i guess you can say the same for a lot of our hopefuls that had previously shown promise & then had a crap year in 04.

we are not going to win a premiership with Shirley etc so i would rather use untried youngsters in his role
