Crows pick Bickley for Darwin

Adelaide has surprised by including dual premiership captain Mark Bickley in a squad of 28 for the Wizard Home Loans Cup quarter-final against West Coast in Darwin on Friday night.

Bickley, recovered from a broken left leg and a subsequent infection, was expected to ease back into football with a light run for his old SANFL club, South Adelaide, on Saturday, but he will now play part of Friday night’s match.

Port Adelaide Magpies’ Matthew Smith, 19, a tall defender from Oakleigh under-18s and Adelaide’s third pick (No. 48 overall) at the 2000 National AFL Draft, is in the Crows’ squad for the first time.

So, too, is former Sturt (SANFL) and St Kilda defender James Begley, 22, Adelaide’s third pick (No. 68 overall) at last year’s national draft.

Mark Ricciuto (ankle), Wayne Carey (hamstring), Nathan Bassett (thigh), Scott Welsh (groin), Ben Marsh (knee), Kris Massie (calf), Ben Nelson (hamstring), Jacob Schuback (ankle), Daniel Schell (groin) and Trent Hentschel (back) were not considered for selection.

Welsh (West Adelaide) and Hentschel (Woodville-West Torrens) are expected to play in SANFL practice matches on Saturday.

Adelaide’s squad:
Andrew Crowell, Matthew Clarke, Ronnie Burns, Nigel Smart, Tyson Edwards, Matthew Bode, Michael Doughty, Robert Shirley, Matthew Smith, Jason Torney, Ken McGregor, Graham John****, Mark Stevens, Tyson Stenglein, James Gallagher, Ian Perrie, Andrew McLeod, Brett Burton, Ben Rutten, Mark Bickley, James Begley, Brent Reilly, Ben Hart, Rhett Biglands, Simon Goodwin, Martin Mattner, Chris Ladhams, Nathan Bock.

A few Surprises. I would drop Shirley and one of Begley, Smith and maybe Bickley. I sill have a bit od doubt on Stenglein and his hamstring.

Schuback's injury timing is real bad, as he misses out on a fantastic opportunity to show us what he can do.

Shirley has probably been named as an emergency in case Stinger doesn't pull up. I heard that AFC are resting him from training, but he shpuld play. Think we should go for running power in the conditions, so either Smith or Bock the other to miss IMO.

I am a bit concerned about Bickley. He has had a VERY interupted pre-season and I would probably like to see him play a half in SANFL before getting a run with Crows. Having said that he is a very experienced player and if anyone can do it Bicks can:D

I can only assume that AFC are 100% happy with his injury recovery. If that's the case then the quality of the player is enough to warrant his inclusion in the team. No better place for him to get some match practice.

The ground will be......a swamp...........very slippery........or at the very least (in racing terminology) very heavy.
Bickley....broken leg.....

With their being 8 on the bench there is plenty of scope for Bicks just to have a small run to get back into the swing of things

He probably doesn't know anyone who plays for South anymore!!

I really hope Smith and Begley get a run to see what they are like.

Massie is proving to be very injury prone.

Agreed. It worries me a bit.

But the actual leg break was in October, more than four months ago. Infection aside, I'm sure the break would have healed by now.

I have faith in our medical staff, I'm sure they have worked out that there is minimal risk. I'd say no risk, but I suppose there is always a risk even if they left it for a year and he played on a dry track.

Jars458 is right. I'd say he'll play for a quarter at best. If the conditions are too bad then he may no play at all.

Bickley will play a quarter.
Stenglein won't be on the plane and Begley's also going to miss the game so Smith will be on debut.

Good luck to Smith and Bickley! There would be some concerns over Mark, the upside is that it may keep the team a Shirley free zone.

So the in's and outs could be:

Out: Bassett, Stenglien, Gallagher, Perrie

In: Stevens, Smith, Begley, Bickley

I heard Phil Harper on Ch 7 say that Bickley will play and Smith is a "really good chance". So reading between the lines I would suggest that Stevens comes in for Bassett and Bickley and Smith are 2 extra interchange players. There is some doubt with Stenglein and if he is in doubt I think Shirley will get a chance but I would much rather go with Begley.;)

Agreed! That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the news tonight.

Perrie and Gallagher will stay in the line up because We are allowed 2 extra interchange players because of the heat rule, hence the team will stay the same except for injury replacements and 2 extra interchange players.

Cheers.

West Coast: Michael Gardiner, Chris Judd, Daniel Kerr, Chad Fletcher, Jeremy Humm, Ben Cousins, Michael Braun, Kane Munro, Callum Chambers, Rowan Jones, Andrew McDougall, Dean Cox, Quinten Lynch, Michael Collica, Darren Glass, Phil Read, David Sierakowski, Ashley Sampi, Mark Nicoski, Andrew Embley, Kasey Green, Adam Selwood, David Haynes, Adam Hunter, Troy Wilson, Brent Staker, Aaron Edwards, Trent Carroll.

No Jackovich, Matera or Chick.

Lynch and Wilson worry me! I hope we can handle them.

Still a good side. Jakovich, Ph. Matera and Chick being out weakens the side. As for Lynch and Wilson, I say Smart on Wilson and Rutten on Lynch. The match up I would like to see is Graham John**** on Ashley Sampi.;)

Perrie will definitely stay in the sqyad (is sqyad a Greek word Stiffy? ):D ) He earned his spot last Saturday, in spite of what we all felt about his selection prior to the game. Gags I'm not so sure about, as he did nothing although he did only have limited game time.

Bassett is a definite out and Stevo seems to be a definite in.

If Stinga plays then I don't think Shirley will and vice-versa. That cuts it back to 27 if that proves to be right.

Bickley looks like a definite in, so one of Begley or Smith (or maybe Gallagher) could be the other out from the 28 named. Because it's unlikely that they would want 2 players having their first match back from injury, then Begley is a possible candidate to miss.

Eagles are sending in a very young squad, so i really don't know what to expect from it. On the one hand the adrenalin may run high and they'll put in a hell of a performance, on the other hand their inexperience will probably mean that a drop in intensity will be hard to comeback from.

Wish this game was on free to air, i would love to see some of these youngsters (might have to head off to Crown).

I am very confident that Gallagher will get a run this week. He is one of the fittest players at the club and with humid conditions expected, you need your fit running players around. I think GAGS's spot is secure and I think he will get a better run this week.

Maybe I don't know:D ;)
