Well I went along today to witness the inaugral new training format. They warmed up on Max Basheer for about 20mins before making their way onto AAMI stadium for their session proper.
Being an open session there was not a lot of game play simulation. I guess its also mid season training so the session cant be too taxing by way of competitive training.
There was a lot of more traditional training drills with players on cones at different stations waiting for the ball to make its way from station to station, kicking to leads etc.
There were some ball movement drills but overall there wasnt much that stood out by way of interesting drills.
MIA was Moran, Jacky, Mackay, Knights, Otten, Burton, Craig, and Hentschel.
Henderson and Sellar were training together with a lot of kicking to leads and ground level skills like picking a bouncing ball up off the ground. They both look to be moving at pretty much 100%. They even did some sprints along the boundary line and didnt flinch when having to strain to mark a ball on the lead. I would say they could play this week but wisely will be rested.
Martin and Symes were also training together with Martin joining in with some of the week with the main group but nothing competitive. They both look very close to being ready. I would say if it werent for them having to tick a couple more boxes in rehab due to missing so much footy they too are looking very good. I really like Martin. He is so skillful and is certainly in our top handful of players for overall skill. With his attacking mentality and running ability I think he'll be a great option on the opposite wing to Mackay. Add Jaensch, Shaw and Armstrong and very soon the club is gonna have some very attacking, quick and skillful running players in the side.
At the end of the session the boys did player specific training. Walker was talking to Schwerdt a lot. I really get the impression Walker is eager to work on his weaknesses. They called Danger over (being our quickest/agile player) and they strapped a cord around each of their waists and joined both cords to each other with velcro. Danger would then runall over the place doing u-turns and running in an snake like path. Walker's task was to stay close enough to Danger, keeping up with him and reacting quick enough to his moves preventing the velcro to come apart. They did this over and over. Great to see players working on their areas of weakness. Walker then put his arm around Danger and they seemed to be pretty close
.
Tippett worked on goal kicking. Maric and Mckernen worked on picking the ball up off the ground while Viney bumped them as hard as he could with a bag then they had to quickly give it off to Bickley by hands. I guess this was to work on their ability to get clearances and be clean at ground level.
All the players worked on different things. Gees (out of the blue I know) Armstrong is bloody skillful. Looking forward to when he is physically capable of playing good AFL footy because imo every other part of his game is sound.
McKernen is so quick for a big guy. In the ball movement drills he did a number of long quick bursts with the ball through the corridor and then kicked to a leading forward. One time Reilly was chasing him and couldnt get near him and another time Mckernen was being chased by someone else and they couldnt run him down.
If I think of more I'll let you know.
