Smart among six inclusions

Sportal/Exclusive to afc.com.au
The Crows have drafted six new faces into an extended 25-man squad for Sunday's match against the Western Bulldogs at AAMI Stadium.

Nigel Smart is in for his 278th and final AFL match, along with Fergus Watts, Luke Jericho, Ben Rutten, Scott Welsh and Scott Stevens.

Watts, who has come close to senior selection several times so far this season, will be poised to make his AFL debut if included in the final 22 to be announced on Friday.

Injured pair Wayne Carey (neck) and Mark Stevens (abdomen) and Jacob Schuback (omitted) are the players to miss from the line-up that went down to West Coast at Subiaco last Saturday.

The Bulldogs have made three inclusions and no omissions as yet.

Brad Johnson has been named as an on-baller after one match out with a shoulder injury despite looking proppy at training during the week.

Adam Morgan and Lindsay Gilbee are the others to come in for the Dogs. Both have been named among the club's seven interchange options.

Thanks Jerome, sounds like some pretty good INS.

Watts, Rutten and Jericho all deserve a run, but unfortunately at least one of them is likely to not make it.

Stevens coming in may be a good idea, because looking at our ommisions we seem to lack a tall, (slightly) experienced target.

Smarts playing at FF, which I find a little odd. Perhaps the want him to get a bag before he retires.

Bock is geuinely lucky to still be in the side, and Schuback perhaps unlucky not to get another chance.

However, if Watts is being named at CHF, wouldn't that suggest he has already made the final 18...

Jericho and Rutten are not named for Westies so one would suggest they are playing (or 1 of them is injured)

I expect to see McGregor at CHF, Rutten at FF and Watts in the pocket or on the flank.

Bock is a bit lucky but considering we want to play youngsters I am not surprised that he kept his spot especially since we will need KPP coming through for next year.

I would have preferred Carey and Stevens to be playing when Watts made his debut but injury has ruined that. With his reputed fearless approach on the ball I would like to see a few bigger bodies around him for a bit of protection. The last thing we want is for him to get cleaned up big time in his first game.

If it works out as you have suggested I'll be happy.

Would assume then either S.Stevens, or one of the two ruckman will play at CHF

or

Mcgregor will again play CHF, with Biglands? at CHB?:(

Schuback dropped again without getting a go, I don't know I give up :(
I believe his game intensity is well down on what an AFL footballer should be.

Has all the skills to be a very good player for us, but as I have said B4 the club is making a statement to Schuback to put in no less than 100% whether he has the ball or not.

We don't want another Bowden (Richmond) :(

Fair point but he is far from the only Crow that could be said of this season and for a club that is talking about giving the kids a go for rebuilding time seems a tad out of line with the official line.

Not too sure about playing all the young players at the same time... like Jericho, Watts, Bock, Rutten. Its important Rutten plays some good footy over the next 2-3 weeks, hes definately good enough for the AFL if he plays at full forward, not too sure if hes quick enough to play up back...

We should win this game

Give him a run back in the SANFL and it should be obvious when/if he deserves a recall.

I dont think Schuback is getting a fair run. He just isnt getting time to cement a spot in the team.

I agree with you Fergus, some more experince up forward is needed. I would not be suprised to see McGregor at CHF, Hentschel at CHB and Watts coming off the bench and playing in a forward pocket or HFF. I wouldnt mind Watts having a run in defence either.

KG said that Jericho was not picked in in Westies side so he is either injured or is playing for the Crows. He was too good last week to be dropped.

I reckon Kenny must play at CHF because as it has been already said we need some mature bodies around youngsters. THis would have to be the youngest side that we have played in ages (or quite possibly ever). It would be good to see how youngsters perform in Smart's farewell game. They are thrown in the deep end no doubt but their are either going to sink or swim.

Relly looking forward to see how Watts goes. I am not expecting much as I think he is still very young but I am sure he will be a top player in years to come. If Rutten plays at FF (as I expect) then it will be a huge challenge for him to play on Harris.

A fair few members of the Crows B team that lost to the Bays have been named this week. That's how inexperienced this line up is.

and there is only 2 possible outcomes. Those youngsters respond by playing the game of their lives and win OR more likely get blown off the park.

The way I see it, it will either be a close win or a big loss.

Think thats a realistic approach. Hes still going to need a lot developmental work to his game.
As long as we are patient.

Unfortunately we sometimes expect too much too soon.

Hope Jerrich plays as this kid has a mental toughness and flair to his game, that the AFC has rarely seen.

Personally, I think Fergie is more mentally tough than Jezza. Both are pretty raw but hell both are exciting prospects.

If only Krueger can string a few games together and get a game to show us if he is up to it.

Hard to comment on a player you've never seen play. But I like that Jerricho has looked completely at ease in the games hes played. (unlike Schuback who looks so relaxed he could potentially fall asleep on the playing field:p )

I'm getting nervous about Kruegers constant injury problems. His injury history goes back further than just this year - could be a concern:(

Thats why we should go after Polak. Imagine Watts Polak combination in the forward line in a couple of years time.:D

Jericho is a very exciting prospect because you don't know if he's going to have a bad one or if he's going to have an impact.

After seeing his first few games, I can see that one day he is going to be a very good player and take the game by the scruff of the neck. But right now, he's far too raw to have a large impact.

The thing I'm frustrated about is that many people are telling themselves that Fergs is going to kick 10+ goals every week and be the answer to our KPP problems and lack of contested marking.

I'm going into this game on Sunday expected a good show from Mega, but not a carnival as most people have predicted.

Not that you're one of those people Stiff. ;)

Now you are dreaming - no way Polak wants to leave Perth. He said that prior to originally being drafted.

Sorry but our bigman recruiting will have to be via the draft.

BTW I noticed you didn't have Woods as the #1 sth aussie draft pick - your thoughts and opinions on Griffen?

Thats the thing about certain players - their unpredictability, and Jerricho gives that impression of being a bit unpredictable and dare I say a matchwinner (I'm sorry if I'm getting in front of myself with that comment ):p
