McLeod is awesome. How often we see him arrive at the spillage at full pace and take it cleanly. It's a treat to watch.
As Graham Cornes famously said - "the best player in the league with balls below his knees" :p

See also "bash and crash" - the more spillages and loose balls moving forward, the more opportunities for good crumbers. Crumbing doesn't just happen at marking contests.

i think our greatest deficiency is a lack of pace all over the ground and has been for years

IMO there seems to be virtually no real quick players neither amongst the smalls, nor the talls and nor the mediums and i contrast this to the PAPs who have made pace a cornerstone of their game

but back to crumbing: the forward line lacks pace and crumbers and defensive pressure (except by Welsh) and in some ways perhaps a lack of pace contributes to this lack of defensive pressure as does our tackling which is very meek IMO

another bad habit up forward seems to be the reluctance of our players to have a shot for goal from around the 50m line - instead they usually try to chip it in either to the pocket or to the front of the goal square to a contest
- surely our blokes can kick 55m

the crumbers we do have either lack pace (Bode,Skipworth),lack intensity (Scuback,Jericho),lack ??(McLeod,Edwards)

I'm sure that we must be the worst crumbing team in the comp, and have been for some years now.

That was a huge weakness once again aginst Port. So many more forward 50 entries than port, but another loss illustrates my point.
I'm going to do a bit of bragging here, but Port have the best defence in the league once the ball hits the ground (as long as its not right next to Darryl Wakelin). We're not the best marker of where the Crows are at AFL-wide.

Sorry guys, but in crumbing, Andrew McLeod is streets ahead of Matty Liptak.

It's no coincidence that in our premiership years we had multiple crumbing options. Look at the 97 goalkickers - Bond 20, DJ 39, Vardy 28, plus James, Macca and Tyson Edwards as viable alternatives when resting up forward.

I've got a ball from '97 with the goalkickers on it, and we had no tall forwards kick a goal in that final. Jarman (6), Ellen (5), Bond (4), Smart (1), Goodwin (1), Rintoul (1), Caven (1).

Thankyou Stiffy for mentioning Schuback as an option. I know some of you don't see Schuey as the crumbing-type, but I still think that he showed a lot in that role against Hawthorn last year. Not only does he have pace and a thumping kick, but he can put pressure on the opposition's defence.

Now all we need is for him to get fit, show some good form in the SANFL, stay fit, force his way into the senior squad, then actually get some game time...

I agree with that latter statement.

Just more of the same macca, how many times in the last 3 years have we blown oppositions away in the forward 50 entries & came out behind on the scoreboard ??

I keep seeing Bock & Jericho getting in the way of something decent if not standing flat footed & then i keep asking myself why, why, why.

There is no doubt in my mind that the best crumber the Crows ever had was either Nick Pesch or Sudjai Cook. :D

With respect to Schuby - I saw him play against Hawthorn last year and he looked alright - admittedly everyone looked good that day though (even Ayres).

However, he was drafted at the same time as Reilly - if he shows nothing this year - GAWN!

From memory he is about 9 months younger than Reilly, but the J-Tools comments still stand. He needs to deliver.

The fact that he is a dead********** country victorian who knocked up some dumb bird at age 19 also counts against him......

P.S. Was that too harsh? :D
