Bit of a gay post, but today confirmed for me that I love the sport more than the punt.

Was absolutely shattered Maldy was scratched after following him since his first run, loading up on him for doubles and having a fair whack at him today.

Fortunately (believe it or not) ran and got on Master O as soon as I saw the 2 fav's were scratched (thank god I had somehow gotten into the young members with Daisy, Heath S and co) and got the quaddie to top it off. Ended up winning more than I would have overall with my Maldy bets, but still feel hollow.

I love Haradasun but hope Maldy can make the races next week, and flog them all.

Lockyer I didn't even back Maldivian or Eskimo queen and i felt ill watching that.
It really was awful.
Haven't felt that bad watching a horse race for a long time.

BTW I had Douro Valley.
Thought I was home there for a bit. Had a heap on him but even after the race i was still worrying about whether Eskimo queen was ok.
I thought she may have had her leg hooked up in the gate so i was thinking the worst.
It's not everyday you see something like that.:(

So shattered about Maldevian that you were still able to bolt to the nearest tote/bookie, load up on Master O'Reilly and then spend most of your post telling us about how much you ended up winning?

I'm sorry but your story doesnt sound like you love the sport more than the punt.

Right.

Not judging him, just questioning what he wrote.

Surely anyone who loves the sport more than the punt would probably have been so gripped in the moment, glued to the action which was unfolding and probably one of the biggest stories in major race history. Anyone who loved the animal would probably have ranked the horses welfare miles ahead of that.

Running back to the tote to get a replacement bet on would surely indicate desperate punter.

Terrible scene. Literally made me feel sick seeing poor Mal like that. I really hope they get to the bottom of what the horse was cut on. Someone deserves a huge kick in the @$$ for it.

Personally I'm a bit surprised about the degree of hysteria regarding Maldivian's injury. Eg the clown on the front of the Age yesterday who was that upset that he "will never go to another horse race again".

Fair enough there was a bit of blood about but at the end of the day the horse had a cut to it's head which needed a few stitches. It will be fine.

Not sure how these "sick in the stomach" crew would handle a season of jumps racing or seeing that horse break a leg in the home straight of the Sandown Guineas two years back.

Just on the maldivian incident I would like to give kudos to the barrier attendant (closest to the camera) that was holding maldivian while he was trying to jump through/over the barrier. It's not easy holding a horse of that size but he did a really good job from him being injured even further.

Just on that aswell. **** being a barrier attendant. Most dangerous and frightening jobs there is. I helped out one day at some barrier trials and geez they are tough, those blokes.

In retrospect my post was a bit of a wank but my only point was Id have rather been on the $2 winner who Id watch rise through the grades over the one that paid $5. Obviously my point was lost in translation after a day on the booze but Ill keep my stories to myself next time.

PS There was a good 5 minutes to pretty much work out there was an almost moral still left in the race so I hardly think Maldy will be shtty at me for getting on....and I'm quite sure I didn't incorporate any fictional wager amounts in there..I could be a 50c EW kind of bloke?

Agree with that. It doesnt compare to the sickening sight of seeing a horse snap a leg or have a fatal fall in a jumps race but still when you are a big fan of a horse as he is Maldivian then I can see where he is coming from.

I don't handle seeing horses breaking their legs well either. And I hate jumps racing. I can never forget what happened to African Prince years ago at the Valley.

Nothing wrong with jumps racing. To me it is actually the most exciting form of the sport. This season in particular was sensational.

In fact if you get right into it flat racing can sometimes seem a little bland by comparison.
