Analysis Current values for each player on the Carlton List

100% corect and is why I have prefaced everything I say about Kennedy with IF he wants to stay....

anyway (IMO) under a coaching regime that will no doubt value genuine competitors over skinny runt bludgers and half steppers Kennedy will do just fine.

This is my concern for Fisher ...

too may 'potentials' think they are still playing touch football...

I just don't think Fisher has the mental toughness to make it. He certainly isn't a starting mid .. his forward craft is getting better BUT ... he isn't a stand alone HFF ... so really unsure where he sits moving forward.

he is not in my starting 22 - I'll leave it at that ..

I mentioned in another thread recently, that a lot of our players are better than their current values on the open market. Of course the variables include age, contract, injury history, character and position played.

Going through our list, I have applied current values to each player. These are based on what I believe other clubs might be willing to pay and what I'd be happy to pay for these players if I was wanting to bring them into our team, and applying a little bit of precedent from memory.

I know people are going to disagree with my assessment of some players and substitute their own. This is a good thing. Feel free to question my choices, ask me to explain and discuss your own values so we can get a consensus.

As you said, it's very subjective. When I allocate 3rd rounders, I'm generally thinking of SPS who we traded for a late 3rd rounder and deciding if those players have as much value as him. I don't see Dow having less value than SPS given their 2021 seasons for instance.

On Weiters, I look at Jake Lever getting the Crows two first round picks. I could see someone willing to do that for a genuine KPD like Weiters. It's all a hypothetical exercise and I hope it never comes to pass.

I think our general attitude towards our failures to date also influence our values. Based on our assessments, you probably wouldn't expect this side to make finals next year but we kind of do, so we know the potential and think that other sides probably do too.

Yep.

That’s the only way I would be satisfied with a Sam Walsh trade, if the two top 10 picks turn into bonafide champions. But as you can’t predict such a thing, I would never entertain a Sam Walsh trade.

Apparently Gold Coast really wanted to trade two of their Top 6 picks and after 3 years, Sam has been so incredible that I can’t picture wanting two of those Top 6 players (Lukosius, Rankine, M. king. Rozee, B. King, go further and include Smith) in our 22 over Sam.

Lukosius and Rankine, I concede. One of the Kings and Bailey Smith for Sam Walsh, I think most teams would do the trade. We just love him and he's ours so wouldn't want to lose him. For the good of the team though, that's 2 A graders for the price of 1. It would never be offered so we will never be tempted to sell our soul in that way but with a practical mind, considering players as commodities, you do the deal.

I get it. Navy Blue glasses on.

Good luck finding a neutral that would think Walsh is worth King and Smith, let alone thinking you wouldn't take the deal. Again, if you are purely looking to value add to a side with no emotion attached.

Plowman for a late 2nd? yep we are balls deep in mid pre-season fog.
late third, early fourth at best but more likely a DFA pickup

I was saying no, because in no world would it happen.

A late 2nd is a pick in the late 30s. Given his experience and performance in our B&Fs, I'm not sure it's really one to quibble over, at least not a result of being in a fog. Again SPS was worse and we got #52 for him. It's just subjective.

George Hewett - Carlton paid: Free Agent - Current worth: 2nd round - Not trending - :whitecheck: Around the mark.
Lewis Young - Carlton paid: Petrevski-Seton - Current worth: 3rd round - Trending Up - :whitecheck: Can he keep trending up though???
Jesse Motlop - Carlton paid #27 - Current worth: N/A - No trend - :whitecheck:
Dom Akuei - NGA Cat B rookie - Current worth: N/A - No trend - :whitecheck:
My only nit pick is Weitering. Any club would pay overs for a 10 year AA standard defender. Worth 2 top 10s easily.

Make finals and all the late seconds 3 rd rounders jump up half a round in value overnight in people's minds and the top players add a pick to their value - or more. That is why playing finals is the most sustainable strategy a list manager can wish for...

bottom teams lose players more easily and get paid less for their players

it is one of the main reasons why equalization moves have failed and need interventions all the time

the best thing that the AFL could do to make the competition more equal is to allow Clubs to trade players irrespective of player agreement.

Player values depreciate basically the moment they are drafted, especially at the top end. Most players aren't worth much, and that includes best 22 players in decent sides. Unless you're a difference maker you're fairly replaceable.

That's why you can glance over a list compromised of a lot of early picks and there's a fair difference in their original draft position. At the elite level you have to continue to prove your worth and it doesn't take long to taper off completely, even only a couple of years after being taken as an early selection.

New draft picks are novel, they are completely unrealised potential and they have the benefit of a nice curated highlights package foreshadowing their capabilities as an AFL listed player.
