Cars & Transportation Cyclists get mown down by car psychopath

Maybe you should read it properly.

The 'Exception' refers to bike lanes. On a single-lane road, you are allowed to ride 2 abreast.

This is pretty normal. Most people don't know the road rules fully. They either have faded memories from their learner days many years ago, or they've heard something down at the pub that sounded OK, or they have convinced themselves that 'X should be the road rule, because X sounds like what I think it should be'.

I wasn't being sarcastic about the refresher course. Most road users would benefit from one - including cyclists.

All good mate.

To tell you the truth I don't remember much at all from the theory side of things. Most people wouldn't like you said.

I was basically going by what they said on the radio the other day. There was a big discussion about cyclists and some so called expert was saying they aren't allowed to ride 2 abreast on single lane roads.

Ah, I see where you went wrong there.

'On the radio' - 'Expert' - 2 phrases that are often heard together, but rarely with any justification.

There are a lot of raod laws designed to assist cyclists - they are a valid road user, and actually were road users before cars appeared.

But cars outnumber bikes 1000-1. They outweigh bikes 500-1. I am a bike rider, but I don't use my bike as a major piece of transport - I am strictly a weekend warrior. A leisurely Sunday ride suits me fine.

Even so, I have been put in some pretty dangerous positons, and I have had 'the big one'. No one was seriously to blame - if I was in a car, I would have got a small dent on the bumper. On the bike, I got 16 stitches and a broken thumb. It was one of those traffic mess-ups where the actual perpetrator could have been 10 cars away. 2 other cars DID get dents in the bumper. I just got caught up someone elses accident. One of the hazards of the game .

I don't push my 'bike rights'. Example, I never proceed when I have right of way without making eye contact with the car driver first. I have also read some tortured justifications for why bike riders should be allowed to run red lights, and I think they are all bullshit. I would be happy to pay rego and 3rd party. Based on the damage a bike does to the roads and possible injuries to others, the cost should be about $5.

I don't want my gravestone to read 'He was in the right, but he's dead'.
