The Jazz have been one of the most respected (even if disliked;) ) teams in recent times with Stockton and the Mailman synonymous with their success.

However, with Stockton hanging up his boots and the Mailman pursuing a championship, where are they at? Harpring and Kirilenko are decent players, but they have failed to attract any free agents despite having 20 mill to spend.

How will they fare?

I have followed the Jazz since about 1990

now, our 2 best players are AK and Harp

Corey Maggette was retained by the Clips, and now we are screwed

However, i will always be a Jazzman

Stockton to malone forever!!!!

yup

he played in the Rocky Mountain Revue and showed flashes of greatness

also look out for Raul Lopez

Yze: There are no flashes of greatness in the summer league. Ask Devean George.

Further, might I add how ironic it is that you follow a team that has been far below the league average in terms of talent for a while now and yet has overachieved... and yet your AFL team of choice has a vast selection of top 10 players and perpetual All-Australian players and yet is a piece of ****.

Im aware

and the Jazz were never short on talent

Stockton and Malone are 2 of the greats.. talent is not just dunking like MJ

The Jazz of the last couple of seasons were a shadow of their mid-to-late 90s hey-day. They were hugely short on talent this season, relative to their performance, that is undeniable. Now they get bad draft picks, and their two best players ever have gone... and the upcoming draft will suck.

Excellence?

I had this debate with Mocca once before, but i think the Jazz underachieved, given the talent they had.

They were good for an extended period of time, but excellence is only achieved when a ring is won.

Fair comment. The proverbial cake without the icing.

Jazz need to bite the bullet, give Jerry Sloan(who has been a fantastic coach, but it getting on a bit) a golden handshake, get a new young coach and completly revamp their image,or they will be in the celler for the next 10 years.
Who would you replace him with? They`ve got a tough job to rebuild their side, but my impression of Sloan is pretty good. Has he commented on the rebuilding issue?

I think Sloan is a good coach too,but how many rings did he win?

they have to change their image if they are going to lure good, young free agents to rebuild their side.In the past few years they have attracted Starks,Amechi,Manning and Mark Jackson, all old players.if they dont get any youthful talent they will be down for a long time.To do this they have to thank Sloan for a wonderful stint as coach but then get a young fresh coach to replace him possibly terry porter,Mark Jackson. If they wanted to take a big risk they could get Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The Stockton-malone-sloan era is over and the quicker the jazz realize this and do what chicago did and do a mass clean-up,than the sooner they will get better again

Sloan was a bit stiff to come up against Jordan`s Bulls and Shaq`s Lakers. Not too many coaches took rings away from Phil Jackson and Sloan had the Jazz as genuine contenders.

The attraction of the older players was throwing the eggs into one basket. He wanted to win a championship while Stockton and Malone were in their prime. I don`t think that Jazz surrounded with the best role players, but that`s another story.

I`m sure that the Jazz know that they have to rebuild now. The question remains who is the best person to do it. I don`t see a point in replacing Sloan if the available talent isn`t there to see the job through long term. Did you have someone in mind JS?

as i mentioned above,in my humble opinion i reakon if the Jazz want to take a gamble,Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would be worth a shot.

He would command instant respect having won 5(or more,i think he won one with milwaukie) championships, and would give the Jazz a new face and image so they can move forward quicker.

Failing that there are younger guys like mark jackson, terry porter or even Bill Lambier.Just my opinion though.

Couldn't ever picture those two players apart, ever, or-- in the case of Karl Malone-- playing for another team.

It's sacriledge, I tell ya... pure sacriledge.

Jerry Sloan's a good coach, but he's going to have to call upon all of his coaching resources and tactical nous in order to get the Jazz into the playoffs this year, IMO.

Sloan is not going anywhere

he is a Jazzman

Some of us old-timers recall him as a Chicago Bull first-- and that's long before the glory days of MJ and company. ;)

But yes, he's not leaving Salt Lake City. He's going to stick it out in the tough times.

I kinda feel for Malone and Stockton though. They surely would have won one if it wasnt for MJ. Same goes for poor old Barkley and Ewing, those 4 are just at the front of the line of great players who were denied rings because of MJ's greatness.
