Was listening to KB and Daicos on SEN and Daics mentioned that he had been approached by Richmond prior to Frawley being appointed about an assistant coaching role along with Paul Roos.
They would install Tom Hafey as coach (being the experienced coach) and have Roos and Daics as the younger assistant coaches.
Wondering what peoples opinions would be if this had've panned out instead of going the spud?

1) I suspect Daics may be 'gilding the lily' somewhat - I've never before heard his name come up as a possible assistant at any other time. Probably he received a tentative 'are you in the running phone call?', similar to what he would have received from several other clubs.

2) At the time Roos had been retired for exactly one year. I'm pretty sure he wasn't a Sydney assistant at the time (think he was doing his US tour). Pretty big call to install him at the Tigers then (would have been a good one, though).

3) I never heard Hafey's name come up seriously as a coach in 1999 - I suspect his name was thrown up to Daicos as a 'Well, what if........'.

4) Lets consider the scenario - a senior coach who is 68 years old, hadn't coached for 10 years, plus two novice assistants. Not very likely.

Still would probably have worked out better than the Spud, though.

I think that Daics is making a lot of this up... I remember Hafey on the Tiger Show on Channel 31 not long after the Frawley appointment.

I can't remember the hosts name (Haigue or something???) asking Hafey why he didn't put his hat in the ring when he saw the Tiges were hunting for a coach. His simple answer was "I wasn't asked" and when pushed on whether he would coach if asked he said he'd consider it in a capacity like Allan Jeans in 1992 as a caretaker to come in and test the players to see who wanted (and to see who was worthy) of wearing the black and yellow.

I remember an article in The Age... I think Hafey said 'I would do it if they asked me' and it was considered briefly. They decided that he would not be up to speed with the modern game... But hey, same with Barassi when he went to the swans...

It *might* have worked... Like others have said, probably wouldn't have been as bad as bloody Frawley...

wasn't really a success other than some fleeting publicity...10 years earlier as in late 80s or early 90's perhaps...but NO...too long out of the game...hell it was only last year that a few were questioning the effectivenss of Pagan and sheeds as veterans , and they never left the caper...think that says it all

I can tell you that what Daicos is saying is pretty close to the mark. A range of options were canvassed at the time. I heard Tom Hafey speak at a coterie function and he was annoyed that he wasn't selected ahead of Spud. My sources at the time (very close to the top) told me about Daicos as well as Roos. So this is consistent with what I heard at the time.

Funny isn`t it ...
Lees than a decade ago we wanted Hafey .... and today we sack a bloke because we want a "Modern skills set" @ the club

Straws ...

Clutching ....

The Hafey proposal makes my stomach turn ... how visionary
