Worth Pick 2.
Everytime this kid touches the footy, its as if Leon Davis has it on the boundary 40 out. The same reaction from the crowd.
He is still young, needs to work on his disposal, build body size. But the look of him, it just makes me think of a James Hird-type player in the making.
Ive said this in another thread, but I can see him, in 4-5 years, being a clog player. If our defence is getting beaten, he can fill a hole as a loose and sweep across half-back and demolish any run.
We aren't kicking goals, he would bob up as a HHF and kick 2-3 magical goals in a quarter.
If there is no run out of the middle, he can go in the centre square for a few bounces and get us a few clearances.
Do you get what I mean by James Hird-type? I know, its early, but I see glimpses...

I like the kid. I was impressed in the final too. He had the best MO of the whole side even if he wasn’t the most effective. At his age all you can ask for is the right attitude to back up apparent potential. He has all that in spades. The query is whether he can be a front line midfielder which we need most from him. Only time will tell but so far I really like what I’ve seen. It’s a credit to the club for taking him given the consensus had at last a few players ahead of him.

Right call by Hine and Co. Hawthorn would have drafted him with their priority pick (3 overall).

Thomas was a huge inclusion this year because the good games he played were, standard wise, simply brilliant. I am very impressed. He will, I hope, deliver the goods consistently.

I think dale is a great player and has proven his potentional numerous times in only his first season. Someone has to lock this guy in the weights room over the summer, I think once he puts on a bit more muscle, especially in his legs, his kicking will improve and will hopefully give him some bite to his bark.

could his errant kicking be due to him having to adapt to the speed of the game? as you said he probably needs a bit of muscle to be able to kick more accurately. but yeah i dont think his kicking will be a problem at all!

This kid is a freak and there has not been many like ablett, carman, daicos. he'll be on the weights and i hope off the skateboard, 2007 daisy show!

The fact that he played this year and Ellis didnt proves he was the right choice.

I hope they make him captain next year.:thumbsu:

big game player, which is what we need to get rid of the collywobbles!

I agree,

I can see us winning a Tight GF for us!

Not meaning to critisise him but, as an outside player which he is (at least until he packs on a fair bit of muscle) he will struggle without quality in and under players to get the ball to him. Who are you grooming for this role with Buckley, Burns and Licuria coming to the end of their careers. Get a few quality guys dishing it out to guys like Thomas who has buckets of skill and potential and you could have quite a solid midfield for you there *insert thumbs up thingy here*

Well Thomas can go inside and I wouldn't be surprised if in the future he become a clearance specialist but you are right. This is the major problem for the future of our midfield. Pendlebury is sort of inside but then again you'd want someone else in there to help both Pendles and Thomas out. We currently only have Davies and Iacobucci who are tried at AFL level. They are not complete duds but you can't build a midfield around.

O'Bree and Holland are the only two players (besides any possible trades that might happen) that I can see being our core inside midfielders in 2 years time. We need Proud or Selwood in this draft.

I don't believe he wasn't a huge outside player. You look at some of his games where he crashes into the packs and bumps the bigger blokes. He would do it more than any other skinny youngster his age.

No teh hawks couldn't of played Ellis anyway because he was concentrating on school studies and only playing school footy.
Incorrect. The school season is short and Ellis played a few games for Box Hill during the year. If he hadn't of missed so much time/fitness etc, the plan was to give him a game or two.

An inside midfielder means a midfielder who is in the bottom of the packs and getting clearances out. An outside midfielder can still be a bash and crash player and pretty tough. But inside players are the types that get in and get the ball out. O'Bree, Licuria, Burns are inside players, Buckley and even Holland are a mix of the two.

Well what do you think Thomas is? Regaurds to the whole outside or a mixture? He can't be all outside? Its not like he hangs out every single contest to get a cheap disposal.

You want a player who took a couple of good marks, and kicked a few goals, but hardly played in the midfield to captain your club? You're an idiot, and what could Ellis do if he was injured practically the whole season and he was concentrating on his studies it was a bit hard for him to play. Ellis will prove to be a better player over time than Thomas which is why everyone laughed at Collingwood for picking him pick 2. We already know Murphy is better than Thomas and we will also see that Ellis will be better than Thomas. Your post was so crap you should go to jail for 100 years PERIOD

Uh, you should be banned from this board for failing to understand simple sarcasm.

And you should be worried about me saying that, given that I'm a mod here.

Go away.

Well it worked for Essendon and Hird who was only HFF for his 1st 3 or so yrs.

Debatable very different players Murphy doesn't seem to have the same flair as Thomas yet they both have similar season averages.:thumbsu:
