MAVERICKS ACQUIRE FOUR-TIME ALL-STAR SHAWN MARION
Mavericks also acquire Kris Humphries, Nathan Jawai and Greg Buckner
DALLAS- The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they acquired four-time All-Star forward Shawn Marion, forward Kris Humphries, center Nathan Jawai and cash considerations from the Toronto Raptors and guard Greg Buckner from the Memphis Grizzlies in a deal that sends guard Antoine Wright and forward Devean George to Toronto and guard Jerry Stackhouse and cash considerations to Memphis. Additionally, Memphis obtains a second round pick and cash considerations from Toronto, while Orlando trades Hedo Turkoglu to Toronto for cash considerations from Dallas and Toronto.
Marion (6-7, 215) is a 10-year veteran that holds career averages 17.8 points and 9.9 rebounds to go along with 2.0 assists, 1.83 steals, 1.31 blocks and 37.9 minutes in 745 games (730 starts). He has finished the season with a double-double average four times in his career with the most recent being in 2007-08 when he averaged 15.4 points and 10.2 rebounds in 63 games.
Marion has been named All-NBA Third Team two times (2005, 2006) and was a four-time All-Star with the Phoenix Suns (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007). He has appeared in 65 postseason contests averaging 17.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.52 blocks and 1.49 steals in 40.6 minutes. Marion has advanced to the Western Conference Finals two times and, in his most recent trip, fell to the Mavericks in 2006 as a member of the Suns. He was also a member of the bronze-medal winning Team USA at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
The Clarksville, Tenn., native was originally the ninth overall selection in the 1999 NBA Draft by Phoenix after forgoing his senior season at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He spent his junior year at UNLV after transferring from Vincennes University in Indiana. In one season as a Runnin' Rebel, Marion earned Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division First Team, All-Newcomer and All-Defensive Team honors while averaging 18.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.9 blocks in 29 games.
Humphries (6-9, 235) is a former University of Minnesota standout drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 14th overall pick in the 2004 Draft. He holds career averages of 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in 288 games. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds last season before fracturing his right fibula on Jan. 18 vs. Phoenix. Prior to his injury, Humphries was coming off his best year as a pro in 2007-08 when he averaged career highs of 5.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 13.7 minutes in a career-high 70 games.
Jawai (6-10, 280) just completed his rookie season for the Raptors seeing action in six contests. The Australian center scored his first career field goal on Feb. 18 vs. Cleveland. Jawai, the 41st overall pick of the Indiana Pacers in 2008, spent most of last season with the Idaho Stamped of the NBA Development League where he averaged 11.1 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.0 minutes a game. No stranger to Texas, Jawai played one season of college basketball at Midland (Texas) College in 2006-07 where he averaged 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in 23.9 minutes a game.
Buckner (6-4, 210), a 10-year veteran out of Clemson, will be returning to Dallas for a third time. Originally a second-round draft choice of the Mavericks in 1998, Buckner played in Dallas from 1999-2002 before signing with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent. The native of Hopkinsville, Ky., returned to the Mavericks in 2006 when he signed as a free agent before getting traded to Minnesota before the start of the 2007-08 campaign. The veteran guard holds career averages of 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 570 games.

With Kidd signing 3 more years and having a fit Howard and Dirk they could give it a shake hopefully Kidd can bring the best out in Marion he played his best basketball at Phoenix with a similar playing in Nash

Kidd
Dirk
Howard
Terry
Marion

Not a bad starting 5

Well with the signing of Singleton, we have our scrapper...and with the waiving of Buckner goes our dreams of a 3-1 deal for a center. Looks this is our final roster.

Kidd/JET/Barea/Roddy
Josh Howard/JET/Barea/Ross
Marion/Howard/Singleton/Thomas
Dirk/Marion/Gooden/Singleton/Thomas
Dampier/Gooden/Dirk

That's the depth chart as I see it.

IMO we are a decent center away from being legit contenders. Marion will help a fair bit on switches, but we will still get killed on pick and rolls. We badly need a center with quick feet on defense and who can score a bit at the other end. The prospect of Gooden playing center for 15-20mins a game is horrible. At best he is as good as Bass; I think Bass is better.

Our best line up is Kidd/JET/Josh/Marion/Dirk and I think that is too small inside to get it done in June

Whats the word on Roddy of late Matty? I saw he was working out with Damp for a while, so obviously he recovered from his injury. Looked exciting from the bits and pieces I saw.

Yeah no recent news. Looks like a younger Devin Harris to me, although not as sexy.

He has a better jump shot than him at this stage but Carlisle has sounded very non-committal this week about the prospect of giving him playing time. It's a pity because he'd probably be our 2nd best perimieter defender (Marion better).

Well when you compare anyone to Devin they are really up against it in the sexy stakes, but Beaubois can hold his own; maybe it's the Frenchness..

Will they D-League him or will he just ride the pine?

Oh and I'd love to hear your estimation of the number of hours wasted by yourself and Mike Fisher re: trades to do with "The Buck Shot".

Will they D-League him or will he just ride the pine?
Good question.

I think him praticising against Kidd everyday is preferable, though it may be a 50/50 split.

Oh and I'd love to hear your estimation of the number of hours wasted by yourself and Mike Fisher re: trades to do with "The Buck Shot".
I poured through ever ****ing roster identifying targets. In the last 2 weeks, Kurt Thomas, Ramon Sessions, Stephen Jackson, Biedrins, Ellis have all been floated...and it comes to **** all.

Im expecting the band to start up about the *insert catchy name* Drew Gooden artificial expiring before the era of the DUST chip kicks into overdrive.

A really great long chat from the best owner in the league

http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/09/live-chat-with-mark-cuban.html

some highlights...

Why did you wait till now to release buck? did we not get any interest at all? And will you guys trade some pieces like jawai, williams, maybe carroll for another center?

Mark Cuban: Everyone wanted to dump their bad contracts on us. We didnt get any offers of players we thought could be top 5 or 6 for us.

Mark i have just one question..are you going to resign gerald green?

Mark Cuban: no. We wish gerald all the best

There's a lot of chatter on blogs these days about the extremely high value of 'instant' expiring contracts such as those of Dampier, Gooden, Stackhouse, and Buckner. Obviously, your front office agree that they can be useful. The release of Buckner suggests that these contracts won't be a roster cure-all. How exactly do you and your staff value this type of contract for trade purposes? Do you think the remaining ones can lead to a super-star acquisitions in the year to come? Or are we really only looking for the flexibility to tweak the roster without giving up key parts?

Mark Cuban: Expiring contracts can be useful, but its far more important to have players who can help your team win. You see big contracts expire every year without being used in trades.
Teams that are looking to take on expiring contracts want guys who can contribute as well. So while they have value, they arent more valuable than the contribution the player makes on the court

I live in SA Antonio tx but I am from Dallas. I am a die hard fan of the mavs. I just want to know what you're going to do about our center. What we have right now I don't think is enough to get it done.

Mark Cuban: If you live in Spurs country, you know that the Spurs havent had a center since David Robinson retired (Funky: Tim Duncan?). they played kurt thomas and various other players there, and it really hasnt hurt them all that much..

While its great to have a dominant center, the reality is you have to have guys who play defense and rebound as well. Damp does that and has done it well for years.

With us adding drew and kris and even tim thomas, all have played the 5 past few years. With Drew we can have a scoring option. With damp and Kris we can cover the big centers (damp) and the small ball centers (kris) and with Tim, we can spread the court.

Tim even did a decent job guarding Tim Duncan when the knicks beat the spurs last year. (Funky: So we will be playing Tim Thomas at center?)
So our 4 headed center should give us lots of flexibility on offense and defense

Do you expect Beaubois to get much playing time with Barea and Terry alreay backing Kidd up?

Mark Cuban: I think as the season progresses you will see us go to our superquick guard combo where some combo of jj, roddy and jet will play the 1 and 2.

Plus, i think roddy will really earn his minutes defensively. He knows that is where he will earn his money

Mark, thanks for the time today. One question for you. Given that most proposed trades don't happen, what is the likelihood that no big name free agents change teams next summer?

Mark Cuban: i think quite a few will change teams as teams and players anticipate what happens with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

What i think might surprise people is that more movement may take place via sign and trade rather than leaving to sign a free agent deal.

Two things happen in a sign and trade that are important. 1, the player can earn more money (you get 12pct increases rather than i think its 8.5pct), and you can add one more year. So that is important.

Plus, most superstars dont like the idea of upsetting the fans of the city they were just playing in. They recognize that being hated doesnt add to their marketability. So if they are goingto leave anyway, the ability to force a sign and trade allows them to say they did their best to help their former team (Funky: DUST chip!)

Can you give a little background into how you guys decided to target Roddy B in the draft? Judging from early praise, he seems to be a pretty darn good pick.

Mark Cuban: Donnie and our international scouts found him. We identified him as the guy we wanted long before the draft. We did our best not to mention his name at all and just had to hope he would be there when we drafted him.

he has the chance to be really,r eally good

Would you have raised your initial offer to Brandon Bass if you had known Orlando would match for Gortat?

Mark Cuban: No. We were excited for Brandon to go to a team where he has a chance to play. We just didnt have minutes available for him (Funky: IMO this is bull shit)

whats your take on kris humphries, is he a starting caliber player down the road?

Mark Cuban: Kris is an incredible talent. He just has to figure out what his role will be with the Mavs. he is super athletic. I think fans are going to love the way he attacks the offensive boards (Funky: Hmmm looks like the final cut will be either S.Williams or JAWAI)

With the loss of Bass during the waiting period for Gortat to sign, the media went crazy, saying the mavs got 'hosed' and 'tricked'. How do you feel about the situation? the mavs obviously couldn't have done much different...

Mark Cuban: Honestly, I think the Magic cost themselves a boat load of money. If they would have come out and said they would match any offer for Gortat, like many teams including the Mavs often do, we wouldnt have bid. So Im not sure what their original strategy was. (see the knicks for examples of this)

Same with Bass. We offered to discuss a sign and trade for Gortat and others, but they didnt even want to discuss it.

The Magic are obviously good at what they do. their success speaks for itself, but i dont think either team outsmarted the other

what your take on big NATHAN JAWAI

Mark Cuban: i havent seen Nathan play yet, so i dont have a take on him (Funky: Jawai is gone)

I've never been a Dallas, Dirk, Marion, Terry or Dampier fan... but I like what the Mavs have put together this season. It at least makes them "significant" again...

I don't think they'll go to the NBA Finals.. but they should be a fun team to watch if all goes to plan for them.

As for a Center... I would've loved to see Chandler go to Dallas... not sure what they could've dealt to get him though?

I don't believe you! Not even Nash and Nowitzki? Early 2000's Mavs/Kings were easily my 2nd fave teams.

The only time I respected Dirk's game was in the 2006 Playoffs...

...and then Miami happened. :P

It took Nash 2 x MVPs to get my attention. I haven't really forgiven myself for that.

On a lighter note, I have predicted a Dirk All Star MVP this season... good 'ol home court advantage. Haha!!
