Just had a listen to Jackos interview with Tiff Cherry from Sunday night and there is no doubt we all know how well spoken and humble the guy is, but I just wanted to make note of something he said about player contracts during it where he states that he acknowledges how well AFL players are paid and live a comfortable lifestyle!
He mentioned that he does his own contracts now and he just said to Dan Richardson he was ready whenever he was and it was done in a few days after an email exchange.
Makes you wonder how many players are as unique as Jacko!

Got no doubt he will end up back at Richmond running the place one day after he retires.

Sorry no link is posted but I listened via the iPhone app!
Definitely have a listen though 2mins well spent!

Nice one nugget...have loads of respect for Jacko...is different to the mainstream in a good way
Agree, he will be black at he club post his playing days in an administrative role
Very smart man...in a commercial and social way
No crap about the bloke...knows his limitations...yet plays so smart and always gives 100%

I actually think he might attempt to pursue something else immediately after retirement, he's someone that really sees stuff beyond football.

But he'll come running back to the ball like he always does.

Yep I listened to it earlier and he is a quality person. I can just imagine his potential best impact may be after he finishes. That's not to say i don't rate him as a player because I always have. But I didn't see the year he's having coming at all. I'm just glad it's going so well for , not just him but, white and a few others. A couple of years ago I felt that he and others could improve once others started shouldering more . It would give him & others the chance to play to their strengths when not trying to do to much.I found the part about meditation interesting. I think individual players from Sydney and Freo may have used it too.

he is definitely someone we need to keep at the club after retirement. maybe not immediately, but later on as an administrator kind of role. i could seriously see him in benny gales role at some point, he clearly understands not only football very well but is clearly intelligent, and his ability to admit his own shortcomings and work within them so publicly suggests he would be a ceo unafraid to genuinely take advice or help from outside (which are the best kind).

Yeah he covered alot of previously speculated information! Found him very open on alot of issues and it was quite a great interview!

Would happily buy the man a beer or 6 for the chance to pick his brain!

I was speculating it in the sense I was repeating what he said on Sunday. :p

he just reminds me of Joel Bowden a lot.

I wish Jacko still wrote on his blog. That was a great read.

I'm hanging onto the possibility of J. Bowden following B. Gale's lead, and coming back to Punt Road after a few years at the AFLPA. Benny's doing a fantastic job, but after the 3 / 75 / 0 targets are met, it might be time to kick Benny upstairs to the Board and bring in Joel as CEO.

Not sure what Joel is up to right now, but I love it when his on Marngrook.

I reckon Jacko would be solid at the AFLPA too. Intelligent. Forthright. It would give him a good background for the Richmond CEO, in the post-Bowden years. ;)

Insanity.

Did Brian Cook leave the Cats job after they won a flag? Did Gary Pert leave Collingwood's?

Just because we get to 2-0-70 won't mean Gale's job is done. There will be plenty more that he can sink his teeth into to help make Richmond a true power club again (like landing some Collingwood-like sponsorship deals for a start).

I don't want to see Gale leave the job in the forseable future (well, not at all really).

Oh, and on topic. I don't think Jackson will stay in football in the short term after his playing days are over. I get the feeling that he'd be much more interested in heading to a field where he can make a difference in the community full time.

I don't really understand fully why a player would need a manager to be honest. Just a waste of money but a lot of players are young and cannot manage their finances. Most of the basic things would be ticked off in a standard contract and im sure the club would not want to deliberately rip a player off as it would bite them on the arse later on. I guess the complications arise as to length of contract, bonuses for making finals AA B&F Brownlow premiership etc. We refer to Brandon ellis in my signature for further proof. Playing AFL at the elite level is not something that comes easy but geez, those who make it are extremely privileged to have done so.

Interesting. I was looking at Ralph Carr's website http://www.ralphcarr.com/web/danieljackson.htm and noticed that not only does he list Dustin Martin as a client but also Daniel Jackson and Luke McGuane.

Yep. Me too.

I was being silly to illustrate the fine streak of behind-the-scenes leaders the club has produced in the past decade or so. We don't need to look further than former players for these types, and that seems a rare thing.

And the 3 / 75 / 0 target still stands for me. It just has a 6 year timeline, rather than 5.

Disagree.

Football clubs are big businesses and the CEO post is vital. It should always be filled by the right person for the job, regardless of whether they played football at all (let alone for Richmond).

It is just a happy coincidence that the right person for the job when it came up was Brendan Gale.

Player Managers would be responsible for ensuring their clients get at least a fair result in all negotiations. For that they would need to be aware of market comps, etc and be able to do sometimes tough negotiations with respect to contract value, duration, etc. This requires, more often than not experience that younger players and/or their parents wouldn't have. Additionally good managers are responsible for arranging other income streams from sponsorships etc and broader commercial opportunities as well as providing and helping players set themselves up for life after football.

I can certainly see the Player Manager role, done as described above as vital for a good percentage of footballers. Not all, as per Jacko, but most.

The issue comes when a player manager is not doing the best for their player which appears to be the case here. Understanding broader context and taking that into consideration with negotiations as opposed to just looking for the biggest number. These managers should be weeded out and experiences such as Cloke and Martin will hopefully highlight this and Carr will continue to struggle to attract talent.

Jacko was on SEN with Harford yesterday (8OCT) - gees what an impressive individual.

Spoke about how he almost quit - about a year ago, had a clipboard in his room which had the number of games left to play before he could quit footy.

Went to see a psychologist who changed his way of thinking -so now, rather than revving himself up before a game he now meditates and simply enjoys himself - loves high 5ing Kel Moore after a goal each time...just loves the things the game offers and doesnt sweat the small stuff - reckons he could have played right up until christmas he was enjoying his footy so much

Is going to Brazil to help kids living in the slums to look beyond their surroundings and improve their lot. He is going with Grimey, Matty Dea, Ian Astbury, and Jake King!

Jacko took Kingy on his first overseas trip to Bali...and now its the slums in Brazil!

Had a big rap for Dimma - reckons he is the best thing to happen to the RFC. Said Dimma is a great mentor - instructed his players not to go over the top after a win, but also not to be too hard on themselves after a loss.

Finally, Jacko took the positive out of losing the elimination final saying every player and coach knew we under achieved by that loss and now have a mind set not to forego that opportunity next time. He said had we have won and then lost to the swans we would have been high 5ing everyone and patting ourselves on the back...and would have learnt nothing
