Perhaps he knew that he wasn't going to be there for the long haul and didn't want to start something that he couldn't finish.

Or perhaps he is a self centred individual who simply doesn't have the capability to lead, and whose only value in a team environment is his performance, which at times can be frustrating when he tries to do it all himself. A team first player Patty isn't, he's a Patty first player.

I'm sure you'll enjoy watching the Patrick Dangerfield Cats next year at Patrick Dangerfield stadium, in the town of Patrick Dangerfield where everyone loves Patrick Dangerfield, but not quite as much as Patrick Dangerfield does.
It doesn't seem like you're capable of holding an intelligent conversation so I'll ignore you from now on.

So you come into our board and expect us to engage in a conversation as to why danger wasn't made captain of AFC this year.

Just **** off mate.

Mod comment: we are sick of this kind of bs. Opposition poster was having a reasonable discussion.

Nah come on mate. I'm not trolling, I just decided to stroll over to your board to see what was going on and decided to give my opinion on a post that an Adelaide poster had written. I've always welcomed you onto our board and I'm sure that you would know that...

If you ask me to leave again then I'll leave but just don't expect me to be so accepting of you the next time that you decide to wonder over to our board.

Fact is Phil Walsh chose Taylor Walker after evaluating the players leadership skills and performance over the preseason and that along with his "Team First" attitude, also said the high regard in which the whole playing held Tex was a factor.

Dangerfield wasn't considered by Walsh...end of story.

FWIW I thought that Sloane was going to be made Captain but obviously I don't follow the AFC anywhere near as closely as people on this board do.

There is no doubt that Tex has done a great job under extremely difficult circumstances and that Walsh's decision has been vindicated in light of that.

However, I do still believe that Danger has some good leadership skills to offer to our club moving forward.

People need to take what Connors, or any other player manager says with a grain of salt. They don't care about the wishes of any clubs involved in prospective deals. They are duty bound to do one thing, and that is to do the best job for their client. All Connors wants to see, is Dangerfield to end up at his preferred destination with the least amount of worry and hassle.

.....with the maximum amount of commission for himself........

He does, no doubt about that. He's a great choice as the modern day captain, given his professionalism, clean image, and polished media performances.

Walker on the other hand, whilst not a great media performer (not yet anyway), is the kind of guy who is the first to stick up for his teammates on the field, he imposes himself on the opposition, and the team walks taller with him out there. The difference in general attitude of the team last season when he was missing, and when he returned against Collingwood was huge. Dangerfield doesn't really have this effect. He does freakish things out there, and throws himself at the ball with a great amount of courage, but he's a bit too nice. Always has been.

I'm pretty confident the leadership skills that Danger has starts and ends with his actions only on the field and whether anyone wants to follow his example. And considering you guys have Selwood, i'm really not sure what Danger is going to do on the field that is more inspirational than Selwood, but maybe some of your players will respond to Danger's "leadership" if Selwood's courageously spilling blood for them and the club doesn't really do it for them.

Also, Walsh's decision never needed vindication. Tex was always the right person for the job.

Hey guys

What are your thoughts on what fair value is for Dangerfield? Personally, I think no matter what compensation is given by Geelong, you're going to lose out (get screwed).

Dangerfield is worth at minimum IMO - A top ten pick AND a gun young player.

Picks are so overrated by the industry it's laughable - look at all the top ten picks over the past decade and Dangerfield is comfortably a better player than 90% of them.

Also - I can't stand that prick Connors - the sooner the AFL deregister that twat, the better off the system will be.

Fair value: pick 9, plus next year's first rounder, plus Gregson. 0% chance of getting fair value though and we're all aware of that apart from the delusional few.

Considering the situation, I think most of us would take just the two first rounders and be done with it. Possibly move one or both of these picks on for established players. Again, this isn't happening.

So that brings us to reality, which doesn't really resemble 'fair' but it is what it is. It looks as though pick 9 is ours. It also appears as though we might be getting a 2nd round pick along with it. Whether that pick actually comes from the Cats or a third party gets involved, we don't yet know. Also not sure if it will be a 2015 or 2016 second rounder.

Also, it appears likely that a steak knives player will be thrown in. Possibly Pick 55, 0 gamer Dean Gore from the sound of things. Or maybe a third party will get involved here too. Who knows. It likely won't be anyone in the best 250 players in the league which is pretty ridiculous.

We need to accept that it simply isn't possible to break even on this trade, get whatever we can (hopefully a bit more than the above but this feels inevitable), then move on and try to profit elsewhere this trade period.

If Geelong don't lodge the free agency paperwork for PD and go straight to the trade table, it's because the whole "keeping our pay structure" has gone out the window and they don't want their supporters and players to know.

All the stuff about PD being a bad leader etc ... I'd want to hear that from someone in the team before I took any real notice, but he definitely doesn't appear from the outside to be comfortable leading. Off-field yes - on-field not so much.

I think it is another example of PD on-field being very different from his public persona - also the way he plays footy is very different to his highlight reel IMO.

I'll be very interested to see how the Geelong faithful review him after the shiny newness wears off.

And don't read this as knocking him down coz he is leaving, I have always admired the positives PD brings, but he is not an all-round player at all. If I was to compare him to say a Pendelbury - I don't think there would be many characteristics that I didn't admire more in the Pies captain. Pendles is clean and hard and skilled - he just won his 4th B&F for a reason, he epitomises team-first. That is the way I like my footballers. Sloane is great example of a 100% team player ... Tex / Betts / Talia fit that mould too.

Maybe PD needs a new surrounding to blossom fully? Now there's a scary proposition !!

Jesus, some of these guys sprout rubbish - no wonder we battle to get a sensible conversation out of some people when this is where they build their knowledge base from !!

Peter Ryan and Nathan Schmook

Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide)

Where's he going?
Returning to Geelong to be near family at Mogg's creek and his fiance's family in Geelong.

How will he get there?
Trade expected to include Geelong's first round draft pick, No.9, and potentially a second round pick in this year's draft, which is currently pick No.28 for the Cats. Seems a fair deal for all parties for a player who has given eight years good service and could have threatened to go to the NAB AFL Draft and leave the Crows with nothing.

Danger was always the first one to get in touch with new draftees and welcome them to the club. He also took several of them in to live with him during his time at the club.

A great on field captain he is not, but let's not pretend he doesn't have any leadership ability.
