For starters, so far this season I think the kids been fantastic, in our best five imo.

And after reading a couple of the articles like Bevans, I thought that Daniels was very interesting to read, even more so then some of the other younger players.

Many say that Jarrod McVeigh should be the next captain, or many others like that, I'm just thinking that in two or three seasons, when the captains have all retired that Daniel Hannebery will be ready to fill the shoes by himself.

Thoughts?

He is very impressive. For Sam Mitchell to come out this week and target him as a player Hawthorn has to watch is quite telling IMO.

On the captaincy debate, there are increasingly frequent mentions of his captaincy potential. Jude bolton said he was captaincy material earlier this year on tv and when I was listening to a podcast of 3AW's Sport's today program from earlier this year as well, and one of the presenters (can't remember which) called him a future captain and said so with some certainty.

Jarred McVeigh's name has been tossed up for a little while so I'm not too sure if he's going to jump in front of him in the pecking order. Still very young, so he's got a long way to go, but I do think he would be a wonderful captain.

Captaincy Material? With his priors for throwing eggs?

i dont think so

Could very well captain the club.

Hannebery - Bird - Jack will hopefully be the core of our midfield for many years to come.

Daniel Hannebery wouldn't be the first youth in the world to be caught doing the wrong thing, I bet that many other captains throughout the AFL that are well respected will have done something that they're not proud of.

Skipping McVeigh is a big thing, but so far this season Daniel Hannebery HAS ticked all the boxes, played consistantly well, been BOG before, played better then McVeigh IMO {Yes I know McVeigh has the best tag}.

And apparently Hanners like to talk a lot :P

Bird would also be a great player for the midfield, I desperately hope that...

Hanners, Jack, Bird, Meredith all get in the team at one stage this year, as I think they'll be our core midfield in the years to come.

And apparently Hanners like to talk a lot :P

As we all know talking is very common on the AFL ground and teams mates are always yelling at each other about where to lead. I read a article a few months ago where Goodes (i think it was Goodes but it could have been another senior player) said that in Hannedery's first game last year he was yelling at guys who have played over 200 games and telling them where to lead. In Goodes enitre AFL career he has never known a first gamer to be that confident going into his first game that he felt like he was a equal with the senior players. In Goodes opinion this certainy a good thing as most new players start off by not wanting to rock the boat.

Birdy and Hanners are the 2 next best options for captaincy of our group under 24. They are the 2 obvious candidates. I do hope that Longmire eventually drops the co-captain thing. Kirk should have been our captain all along and i dont see what Goodesy and Craig couldn't have been good leaders as senior members of the leadership group, or as vice captains, whatever.

Bird to be captain and Hanners to be vice captain i reckon.

I reckon Smith for a smokey for the captaincy.

Hannebery is a special talent, and he could well captain the Swans one day.

I agree Smith is a leader...so much like Kirk just does what he needs 2 do...he was captain of the ressies in their grand final in 2008 he seriously carried a lot of those players and gave an incredible speech

SEXY SMITH FOR CAPTAIN!

If McVeigh captains this club, we're fcked.

He is far too good for a 19yo. It is scary how good this kid is going to get. Scary for other teams anyway.

He's now arguably our No 1 midfielder ... I rate Jack and Kennedy up there, and Bird had shown signs of having gone to the next level. Throw in Rohan, Smith if he's eventually moved into the middle, and if Jetta can toughen up, and with Mumford, Seaby and Currie rucking for the next however many years ... y'gotta look on the bright side after kicks in the guts like today's.

I'm not including McVacant Lot because he'll be more useful as trade bait.

I'll give you McVacant for the 1st half (he WAS pretty soft), but he lifted in the second half.

Gee, our youngsters are awesome. Despite the lost, I still can't stop smiling just thinking about how good they are. They make me so happy! :D:D:D:D

I was thinking the same thing. I think he is just about our best midfielder now. If Goodesy was playing permanently in the middle he would be, but he's not and i think Hanners is just about there. JPK was awesome until he got that knee to the head and Jack is just amazing me atm, he just continues to get better. Those 3 are gonna be right up there come B and F time and Nick Smith's continuing giant killer form surely will have some people giving him a bit of credit.

Personally i think Kirk is making the right decision and a very selfless decision to retire at years end. He knows he is slowing down and these young guys are going to have the club in good hands. I think he could go at the same level next year as this year but he will give his spot to anther young guy, like a Craig Bird, knowing it is in the best interests of this great club.

Could add Meredith and (hopefully) Tom Mitchell to that list as well. Not too shabby.

Mitchell is going to be a absolute gun there is no doubt about it. If we manage to keep Keven Sheedy's grubby mits off him he will slot straight into our midfield in Round 1, 2012 (though he is probably good enough to play in 2011 but unfortunately he is too young).

Hannebery, Rohan, Jetta, Meredith, Bird, Jack, Mitchell and Kennedy is certainly not a bad midfield.

It was quite an extraordinary game from a 19 year old in a team far from dominating its opposition. Wouldn't be surprised if he were leading the B&F at the moment, despite missing a couple of games.

Does anybody else see Rohan not playing midfield? I thought he showed great ability in defence today, and at his height, with another preseason or two, he could be able to hold down a KPD spot as well as being a dangerous rebounder, in the Scarlett mould. He has also shown reasonable goal sense and defensive pressure up forward.

Back on topic though, yes, Hanners is an absolute superstar in the making. Though he's only 19, he's not a "kid" anymore. He knows his role, he's more than capable of outshining his more experienced teammates, he's basically a senior player. He screams "leader". When he slotted that third goal today, I just threw my head back in amazement. To back himself like that, take the responsibility, not even doubt his ability for a second, and bang it home so emphatically just when we needed it was truly something special. He's outshining the likes of Chris Judd, Joel Selwood, Scott Pendlebury and Marc Murphy at the same age.

All he needs to work on is consistency, as he has been a touch hot and cold this year. But even when he has not been quite "on", he's still managed to pot a goal or two, have some really important touches here and there, and otherwise influence the game. He's always in it. Even when he's quiet, he's never missing.

I just love the way our midfield is shaping up. I reckon O'Dwyer will eventually make it, there's just something about him, he just moves like a bloke born to play footy. Still a work in progress, but I reckon he'll make it, and we'll be a lot better for the wait. Vespa I really hope makes it, he's a great talent, and has shown he can use it at AFL level.

I reckon our 2012 midfield/flanks will look a little like this:

HB: O'Dwyer, Smith
C: Jetta, Kennedy, McVeigh
HF: Jack, Meredith
R: Mumford, Bird, Hannebery

I/C: Seaby, Mitchell, Vespa

I take your point on Rohan, and yes, he shows maturity both forward and back. And on today's efforts, I agree on MOD, he looked much more composed today than I've seen him. Not spectacular but he's got something.
