I have always been a fan of daniel jackson, and last night he played one of his best games for us.

i believe he has a future with us beyond this year and should be signed up asap.

He can play in a variety of positions, as a tagger, as a forward and even pinch hit down back if need be.

would just like to get every-ones thoughts on where you's see daniel jackson and his future with us.

cheers.

His past month has been good.
no need to rush to sign him up. it's not like clubs are going to be clamouring over each other to pick him up in the PSD if we don't.
wait and see if he can keep his form over the next 10 weeks. If so, then give him a short-term contract.

I thought he was a dud at first but he has stepped up this year thats for sure.

the notable improvement in his game is directly related to being put into the tagging role, which consequently gets him more of the ball, as the guys he's tagging are generally there. The ability to sink a set shot from 60 is also a good addition.

Its amazing what some confidence and an extended run in the seniors will do. Was close to our best player in the first half. Faded a little after half time. Keep him tagging so he leans where to go for the next few years before unleashing him as more of an attacking midfielder.

Stargate board.
hahaha. nerd. ;)

Jacko has won me over with his recent form, not many players can tag the oppositions best midfielder AND get telling possessions AND kick goals. 1 year contract would do you'd think, he needs a full year of form to be getting a 2-3 year deal. Needs to work a bit on his agility and acceleration to become a genuine class midfielder but at the moment a top line tagger.

he is gaining confidence and starting to break in to be a regular selection. he has had a lot of big tough jobs and done well since coming back and shown he can handle it.

Credit where credit is due.

Thought he was our worst player gong into this season, but has done very well the past 4 weeks as a taggerr/run with player.

Hope he keeps it up :thumbsu:

does anyone get the feeling he suddenly realised he was going to be cut if he didn't start giving it a 100? I think a 1 year deal and words to the effect of "if you continue to improve on this years form next year we'll give you a substantial contract, drop off and you're gone." I think he needs the motivation and it'll make him a better player if he's willing to go on with it.

As someone else alluded to, he has a role now. He;s too small for a key position. Doesn't have the engine or the tools to be a full-time midfielder. Was being starved as a small forward and wasn't suited to a running defender's position.
has a run-with role and is one of those players who manages to nullify while getting a bit of it himself.
So in short, he's found his niche. Needs to keep on keeping on if you know what I mean. Won't ever be an automatic selection, but if he can contribute and play a role, then has a spot in the side.

It is true that he deserves a contract after his effort over the last 5 or 6 weeks but we don't want him to slack off thinking that he is safe, one of the reasons I beleive he is playing so well is because he is wanting to stay in the side, maybe this is why Danny Meyer isn't doing well because he just generally thinks he will stay around no matter what.

Yep good point.
However a reason he didn't get into the team earlier was that he had a fairly major op - his hammy was torn off the bone or something. It's good to see him finding a spot though.

I thought that these attributes were why he recruited him?

Agility, speed and stamina was the main reason we picked him up right? Used to be a pro rower.

Jacko is the ultimate "modern day" athlete type of footballer.

Doesn't have the engine or the tools to be a full-time midfielder.

??

Here is how I thought he was when drafted:

PROs: Excellent athlete - speed, stamina, endurance all fantastic (he was an athlete).

CONs: Had very little amount of football experience and hence, lacked a football brain.

Miller picked him up at 17 years old on the back of school football IIRC. Is meant to be extremely intelligent which I guess is good around the club off field. Miller said Jacko could have gone very early the year after if he had've drafted him when he was 18 years old.

As for contracts you guys need to remember that Jacko is the same age as Tambling, Polo, Meyer and Patto! He is still very young!

What I am excited about is how much his kicking skills have improved. With a soccer background he has "exquisite skills on both sides of the body" as the paper put it the other week. Let's wait and see if his tagging job allows him to build a better footy brain, if he does then watch out.

Spot on. Great athlete, good student, no footy smarts and iffy kicking skills.

Tagging is the best spot for a footy-stupid to play. Follow good players around and get the ball. A smart guy like Jackson can learn a lot of what he needs to know about blocking, positioning, concentrating etc. Some of those instintive things that forwards do might be beyond him.

And on contracts - we have to be careful about handing out too many.

Bowden replaces Gaspar on the Vets List which is one spot. You'd think that Kingsley, Knobel and Krakouer would make way. That would be 4 spots. Do we keep King and Howat? Do we promote Graham?

Great to see some guys actually improving. Makes a change :thumbsu:

Probably still a better kick than pass. Kick it 50m to a spot and he is OK. Not quite as good spotting up a 30m daisycutter to a moving target.

That said as a pretty 'pure' tagger he probably needs to get a little better. He is probably at the point where he restricts - not nullifies. Duncan Kellaway and Chris Bond were actually cutting guys out of games completely.

I mean Bruce still got his 18 touches - more of a draw than a win. (Good result for us of course). But guys like Licuria, Stenglein and Kirk turn those into wins.

Certainly playing a lot better than he use to.

I saw a fair few of our training sessions in the off-season and noticed him working a fair bit, generally after the squad had finished up, on low hard kicks to a target.

David King was the one really urging him to belt the ball in certain ways. He'd work with Axel too. I think it's helped and contrary to Weaver's view I consider him one of our better field kicks on his preferred side...

I like him though think he is a wingman or tagger and reckon he is much better playing between the arcs than as a go-to man... rest of the year in the seniors and he may well blossom further.

It's not about him playing better, it's about him getting a fair run at senior level for once.

Its about him making himself into a better player and playing good reserves football to EARN a chance at an extended run in the senior side. Exactly the way it should be.

No mistake that the guys who have been 'held-back' like Jackson, Foley, Tuck, McGuane, Pattison are showing the most improvement. While Tambling is running on the spot.

Don't rate him...
Slow reactions (and don't count that snap goal, the fastest reactions in that passage of play was J.Riewoldt's handball - reverse the roles and there is no way Jackson could have handballed that fast!)
Gets lost out on the field.
No football brain.
No endurance.
Slow.
Poor decision making.
Plods around.
Will never have any consistency.

Waste of time.
