East Perth's Daniel Murray looming as potential draftee

LITTLE-KNOWN East Perth ruckman Daniel Murray could be a shock call-up when AFL clubs finalise their lists for 2009 in the pre-season and rookie drafts.
Murray, 18, is in Brisbane's sights as a possible crucial ruck back-up, with injury concerns hanging over premiership big man Jamie Charman.
Only last month the laidback Murray was uncertain of his future at East Perth.
Word of Brisbane and North Melbourne's late interest in his ruck capabilities and potential as a rookie, or even a full draftee, rekindled the spark in the talented big man.
Charman, 26, is suffering ongoing calf problems and the Lions considered signing former Western Bulldogs big man Peter Street before last month's draft selections.
The 199cm Murray played this year's national under-18s championships in the shadow of high-prof ile West Coast first draft pick Nick Naitanui.
If Murray is plucked by Brisbane, he would join another Royals product, Matthew Leuenberger, who has endured two injury ravaged seasons with the Lions since he was taken at No.4 overall in the 2006 draft. Leuenberger has played 19 senior games.

Rookie Draft
Selection No. 7: Daniel Murray
East Perth, WA, ruckman, May 3, 1990, 199.4cm, 98kg
Daniel Murray is an athletic 201cm ruckman from East Perth who we believe has plenty of scope for development. We needed another ruckman to balance up our list and we thought he was the best available. He was second ruckman to Naitanui in the state championships, therefore didn’t get a great amount of time but we liked the way he went about his game.
2008 Draft Prospect Profile: Daniel Murray
Name: Daniel Murray
Height: 200
Weight: 96
State: WA
Club(s): East Perth Football Club
AFL Positions:
He is a big ruckman, he contests the hitouts and can then fill in the hole in front of the other team's full forward. Not the most mobile of ruckmen, so unlikely to be used a lot in a key position, but could occasionally play beside another tall forward close to goal to stretch a team with shorter defenders.

Daniel Murray – 200cm, 96kg – East Perth.
WA’s second ruckman who is a very big lump of a kid. From the limited games I have seen him play he looked ok in the ruck as far as Tap work goes but he was quiet around the ground and his kicking was ordinary. His pace is nothing to get too excited about.
Could find a place late in the draft or the rookie draft.
Crash and bash is not an issue at the Lions. In fact the three-peat was achieved with couple of them leading the charge.Seen a bit of him for East Perth Colts and WA U18s. Bash and crash style ruckman that's not athletic / skilful / mobile in any sense of the word. He comes from East Perth who have a rich history with producing very good ruckman though. Sico 17 who would've watched a lot more of him thinks he's a bit of a loose cannon upstairs.
Oh OK. We don't mind rucks with attitude and mongrel. Welcome to Brisbane Daniel.
Murray will wear number 43, which was Beau McDonald's old number.

I don't know about off-field problems ... I think Sico 17 was referring mainly to on-field attitude.
Any chance he'll be promoted to the seniors with Leuenberger out on the long-term injury list and other ruckmen injured?
Critically, in the wake of Jamie Charman joining Matthew Leuenberger on the injured list in the senior game, giant young first gamer Daniel Murray did plenty to impress in his first game for the club. Sidelined by now due to osteitis pubis, Murray was strong at the centre bounces and even stronger in the air around the ground in his short stints during the first half.
Standing at 200cm and 98, the 18-year-old gave first use of the ball to the busy Albert Proud and Scott Harding, who gave the Thunder nightmares all night.
