Is Neale Daniher the right person to coach Melbourne for the next 2+ years?

With his contract up at the end of this season if they reappoint him it will be for 2+ years. At that time some of our main players (Bruce, Green, Robbo, White, Macca ) will be neer the end of there careers.

what will be a pass mark for the rest of the season?

St Kilda didn't lose 9 in a row under Grant Thomas and miss the finals in 2006 (assuming that we don't pull off a miracle). Grant Thomas didn't coach St Kilda for 10 years. Grant Thomas' last top four finish wasn't 7 years ago either.

It is a different situation to the one that they are in. Daniher has had his chance, did a decent job but hasn't delivered the ultimate success (or come close recently). It is time for a change. Now (well, end of season) is the perfect time.

I don't think ND would get in the way like Grant Thomas but I think we would go backwards before going forwards. No coach wins a flag in his first year. So right now I'm happy to persist with Danners and have White, Yze and Neitz having one last shot in the next 2 years, making Daniher an important part of Melbourne history. Then if he doesn't get the job done he can be replaced and someone else can lead the youngsters forward with McLean as captain.

I'll say we need a new coach. if at the start of this year i knew we'd be at 2-9 i'd have danners out ASAP. The club needs to head in as new direction. It was funny how at the start of the year people like Mike Sheahan were saying if he Melbourne doesn't make top 4 daniher is in trouble and now he's 2-9 and we're saying he should stay.

I want somebody else but the players want ND so I have to defer to their better judgement. Even if half of them are probably only saying it because they're worried a new coach would come in and sack everybody.

robbo, neitz and brock arent in much danger of being sacked and said it IIRC, i say stay, if we dont hear anything by late July from the board it means he is going, fact

importantly the players want him there

Do they! They don't play like it. Been there too long and lacks vision. If he stays, I'll seriously reconsider paying more money to a club run by a geeky president and a coach who'd rather play for his futre rather than the clubs future.

your a joke mate! neale is hardly playing for his future! and why the hell would you throw in the geeky comment! the players have come out and stated they want him around next year, why would they do this if it wasnt true! it is my belief he will be the MFC for the next 3 years

There are two sides to this IMO.

Firstly, the players seem very happy to have him at the club next season. Whether this is due to the fact that they reckon he's just a great bloke or they truly believe he can deliver the goods, i'm not so sure. In terms of maintaining player morale, he has to stay on and maybe with a few less injuries and a greater belief around the club, he might just pull something out of the hat (we say it every year though...).

On the other hand, the fact that we haven't made the top 4 since 2000, especially given our playing list over the past few years, really says that we need a change. Yes, we've made the finals in the past 3 years, but it's been ten years since a team has won the premiership from outside the top 4 and fwiw, i think those days are over.

For mine though, a 2 year contract, finish alongside Neita, Yze, JMac & Whitey.

Stuff what the players say. They aren't going to come out and say "Danners has been here for a few years now and still hasn't delivered, let's get rid of him." If they get asked the question by journalists, of course they will come out and support the coach. I wouldn't read anything in to that. No use have Mr. Nice Guy as coach for 40 years if he doesn't win us a flag.

If this club wants to move forward, we must be bold and make some changes at the end of the season. Thank Neale for all he has done, during some pretty tough times, but then move on to our next era.

I (for some silly reason) have a bit of a soft spot for neale, and from what i have heard, he has an absolutely brilliant mind and is virtually second to none in the researching he does of the opposition. i've even been told that goes as far as developing computer programmes to create possible match-ups detailing opponents habits (no, not ben cousins type habits) eg, the side they most often favour to pivot/turn when being run down etc, etc..
I also think if his repore is good with the players then why not let him coach until at least the end of neita's career as i can't imagine a new coach will bring any more success in the next two years than neale, and would like to see the team perform as well as possible and for neitz to go out on as high a note as possible.

If the players want to keep the coach there's only one solution - get rid of the players as well!

The good news is that in the last few weeks we have actually played four quarters - pity that was spread over four games

1st quarter - vs Collingwood
2nd quarter - vs Adelaide
3rd quarter - vs Richmond
4th quarter - vs North

Any danger we can have four in one game please?

Last night was one of the worst coaching performances I've seen in a long time. Daniher came up with nothing to try and stop the way the game wasn't getting played. Even in the 3rd it was the players effort not the coaching changes (except the old 8 man forward line) that got us going.

And who's fault is it the players didn't show up in the first half, the coach has to take the rap for that. It was evident in the warm ups the tigers were going to come out a class above us.
