All class this kid was. Had everything just never used it.
Good luck to him with the decisions his makes. Definately one of my favorite players for the Bombers. Pity he missed out on the 2000 Premiership

Very average footballer who preferred the easy kick but did still play over 100 games.

Had a lot of injuries later in his career, good move that he pulled the pin.

He put his body on the line quite a few times at Hawthorn.

He was a funny player Danny. He was either very good or very bad. The Semi Final vs Port Adelaide in 03 was his worst performance for us & coincidently his last! He was one of our best players in the 01 GF.

Really liked him at the Bombers, although wasn't unhappy to see him traded at the time - he was getting played out of position at the Bombers and needed to go elsewhere for his career.

Not big enough for KPP, not quick enough for anything else.

He could mark and read the play but so could Jason Cloke.

He was great for useless possessions though. :thumbsu:

Jason Cloke did it when he was loose man in defence until sides caught on and made him accountable so the comparisn is irrelevant because Jacobs did it when he had an opponent.

Danny Jacobs was a very smart footballer who read the play better than most and had a great set of hands.

I think when he left it was him, Bolton or Henneman as we had too many talls apparently.

To say he was an average footballer is ridiculous.

Good post. Very astute reader of the play and basically ran the Hawks backline in their worst period. Easily an AFL quality footballer unlike Cloke.

Was never a star because of height and speed problems but a valuable asset to a team, for sure.

Didn't he grow up poor and buy his mum a house with his player payments early on?

He was great at knowing where the ball was going, also a good team player. Might have let himself down a bit at Hawthorn with a certain incident.

To say he was any more than average is ridiculous imo.

While averages don't tell the whole story, they give a good indication.

Here are his career stats per game

2000: 9 games, 9.2 disp, 3.2 marks, .9 cont marks , 3.9 tackles
2001: 23 games, 11.8 disp, 4.1 marks, 1 cont marks , 2.4 tackles
2002: 24 games, 16.5 disp, 6.1 marks , 1.5 cont marks , 2.4 tackles
2003: 24 games, 13.3 disp, 5 marks, 1.1 cont marks, 2.3 tackles
2004: 12 games, 12.2 disp, 5.3 marks , 1.2 cont marks , 2.2 tackles
2005: 15 games, 16.3 disp, 6.9 marks, 1 cont marks , 1.5 tackles
2006: 9 games, 17.2 disp, 7.6 marks, .6 con marks, 1.1 tackles
2007: 9 games, 16.2 disp, 8.2 marks, .6 cont marks, 1.9 tackles

What they show is like i said earlier, liked the easy kicks.

Most of his marks were when collecting easy kicks and for a defender he he didn't lay many tackles.

He wasn't a dud by any means and read the play and flight of the ball very well, but was no better than an average AFL player.

Pretty much agree. One of the best "3rd tall defenders" going around. Knew when to leave his man and assist, peeled off to give drive out of the backline, and generally did a good to decent job on his man.
But suffered from simply not being quite tall enough and/or quick enough to play successfully on the very best tall forwards.

To say he was any more than average is ridiculous imo.

I don't know if stats ever tell a story for a defender. It doesn't include spoils, or how many goals his man got on him. And frankly, how many defenders are taking contested marks?

Think you're being a little harsh. Jacobs played the role his body let him very well, although I'll grant the role is not the most important or significant on the footy field, to say he was an average footballer is tough IMHO.
