Darren Gasper

Why is it that so many of you are bagging Darren Gasper lately?
He will be a lot better next season after a full pre-season and his bad form this year was only because he had no pre-season and was put back in the side way to early.
Give him a chance next season and if he is no good then maybe trade him, his prove himself a great player in past seasons and deserves an opportunity to get back to his best before getting judged

I can understand why people have been harsh on him, yes he's just come back from a knee reconstruction, but that said I would have expected a gradual improvement over the course of the season and at least see him performing at a reasonably good level by the end of the year. Instead, there was little improvement shown over the course of the year.

I'm with you though, let's get him a full preseason, some more help in the backline and see what Plough can do for him. Given the way he has played this year and his injury concerns, we would not get much at all in return for a trade, and would also be left paying some of his salary. We would have a very inexperienced backline if he left, if he can get back to his best it will only help the kids around him. Definitely one more year.

Yeah if he doesnt do anything next year then we should trade him because he would have had a chance that way

Because he bent the club over in getting his $500,000 salary, then he ran around this year with his head and shoulders down, at times not even attempting to make the contest. I realise he was coming back from injury but he did not look interested at all in playing.

Hopefully the club has learnt to get rid of players when they try and use other clubs to leverage huge contracts.

I hope he comes good but I doubt it now. He is 28 and his financial future is assured.

The sooner his contract is up the better.

The other point I've made in the past is that it would be reasonable for the club to ask him to take a paycut. A lot of players gave up some of their salary so we could keep him and he has let us down. If he was a Richmond man, that would be the best thing he could do for the club, wouldn't have to be a big cut, but it could help us get the best player in the PSD.

I recall this time last year there were some senior players who all took paycuts to accomadate the likely inclusion of Brown, and at the time Solomon.

How are we to know that Gaspar was not amongst this senior group?

That is so true. I didnt see a lot of games this year, but I saw Gaspar shirk a lot of contest or simply just stand back and watch a contest that he should have made. This is not good enough for a person on this money who is supposed to be a leader of the club.

You can talk about injuries all you like, but he put his hand up (and out) so he could at least look interested.

Exactly !

It is one thing to be struggling with form but the way he went about it was just plain unacceptable . And this from someone who is in the leadership group !

Begs the question why he is or has not been up for the captaincy ?

Sometimes we make judgements not really knowing the whole picture because we are not in the inner circle , we don`t know the true nature of that blokes problems this season but , from what i saw this year on field , particulrily the last few rounds , it was plain to see that he had given up and it really looked as if he didn`t care .

Based on what i see before me , if i was TW it would be ADIOS

When you hear of Leigh Colbert walking into Arden Street office and saying he wants to take a cut because he believes he hasnt lived up to his salary or the Lions taking cuts to be part of premierships you realise that there are players who really have the club at heart.

I dont see how we could have that attitude at the club when you have players looking to get whatever they can from the club. Eight players needed to take a cut to accomodate his salary. That has to spill through the feeling within the players

Less usual for players to take a cut to be part of a wooden spoon, but I agree with the rest of what you are saying.

Gaspar was one of the eight senior players who were prepared to take a cut to get another player. He was also prepared to the previous year when the club tried to get Lappin in the PSD. I'm not sure whether any of the players took a cut in the end, because we never got that extra player.

Thanks for clearing that up, improves my opinion of him greatly that he was/is willing to do that for the club.

yeh give him a preseason and hopefully TW wont do a Frawley and play in a different position on the field every week. He can get to his AA best again andbecome the best FB in the competition like he was

haha, yeh thats like saying Nick Holland will be a great CHF again.

Holland does have a couple of years on Gaspar though so I would give Gas a better chance of reclaiming status than Holland. That said, both have a long way to improve from this season.

Good point about him being played out of position sante, he looked very lost when moved anywhere else (maybe a better way of putting that was he looked less lost when playing FB). Unfortunately for us, Gaspar wasn't the only one being moved around constantly out of position, it certainly contributed to our ******** poor form. It was especially frustrating to see kids like Moore having to try and learn lots of different positions in their first year, these kids need to be established in their best positions first before becoming flexible like that.

yeah the biggest problem with spuds coaching by far. he really created a confused state for the players. no one knew what the hell they were doing or how long they would be trying to hold down a particular position. good to see the back of him thats for sure. put a player in a spot and leave him there more often than not.

I cant quite make out the gravity of critisism levelled at Gas....i can only recall one successful first year comeback from the big knee, richo of 96. there countless examples of players that have taken some time to come back if at all..sshhh dont mention kouta.....i have everybit o confidence that Gas can recover some lost form ...his trade value on the back of 2004 would be F^&^ all so stick with him

Stop complaining SPUD did us all a service , now that all our players are flexible in the position that they can play in everyone is "cherry ripe", so why dont we all "stick fat" and watch what plough will do with them
