Had a match in Adelaide this afternoon comprising former greats from Victoria and South Australia. They called it the Slowdown. A number of former Hawks were playing, including Dermott Brereton, and the great Darren Jarman.

You should see Fud these days, he's been in a very good paddock, possibly 40kg over his playing weight, but he hasn't lost any of his silky kicking skills. It was refreshing watching a game where players could all kick, mark and handball, the Fud booted 4, including the match winner on the siren.

Gavin Wanganeen looked as though he could still play AFL, he hasn't changed a bit.

Nathan Thompson booted 5 goals for Victoria, and made the game look easy, clean marking, straight kicking for goal .... took me back to a bygone era when footy was fantastic.

Jesus, watching the game now. Jarman looks like a concrete trunk - he's huge and barrel-shaped. My god.

Its looks rather warm aswell. The state he is in is wow that can't be healthy on a warm day like it appears.
I'd be more then happy to give $200 to each charity without wasting my time watching this stuff.

PS. These commentators god and Edington thank god she is good to look at.

jars could have won 2 or 3 brownlows if he wanted too.

Loved a beer and a laid back character.

In my top 3 Hawthorn players of all time. made the game look easy and faster opponents look slow with his vision in heavy traffic.

was shattered the day he left us at the end of 95 as at the time he was really the only reason I was going to hawthorn games we were that bad in 95.

Got slayed for a poor 91 Granny but in the end had the last laugh with some dominating performances in september for the Crows.

There is a photo of Jars in the Addy today, possibly in the HS too? By golly, it's a miracle he can even move, let alone kick a footy in that condition.

Seriously, I hope he loses some weight, it'd be a worry for his health. He looks like he's 5 minutes away from a coronary. :(

Do you know Darren Jarman never ever wanted to leave the Hawthorn Football Club. I've spoken with him many times about this, and whilst he loved playing with Adelaide, he loved Melbourne life and the Hawks.

It was his wife who was struggling with the pressures of being away from her family and siblings in S.A that ultimately brought the trade to a head. He wanted to stay she wanted to go, ultimately family won and the rest as the say is history.

Loved Jarman. Remember talking with him after the 1991 flag in the rooms. Nice guy.

You reckon the demands of being employed by the Hawthorn marketing department weighed on the missus?

That's why people loved Stewie Dew and Darren Lehmann and why in AFL the teams that pick skill and not just athletic ability will always be better.

Class over athletic ability.

I thought that was common knowledge. It was his wife who got him to Hawthorn, and it was she who took him back to Adelaide. Jarman just wanted to play footy.

They were raising a young family, and she wanted to be close to her family. Totally understandable, and whereas Darren was happy at Hawthorn, he just wanted to play football.

A lot of people thought he returned to Adelaide so he could play with his brother Andrew, but that is not the case.

Just on Darren's weight, both Jarmans have the propensity to put on weight quickly. Before coming to Hawthorn in 1991, he was quite portly, and was ordered to lose weight before fronting for pre-season training. I bumped into him at a Christmas function, and although he was rather drunk, I couldn't get over how much weight he'd lost.

Moving to the Hawks was the best thing he ever did in football. Had he remained in Adelaide, I doubt if he would have raised the bar to level he did at the Hawks. His brother Andrew was never anywhere near peak fitness when he played for the Crows. Ironically, after he was delisted and commited to Norwood for the 1997 season, Russell Ebert talked him into getting really fit and show what he could do. He played in a premiership and won the Magarey Medal.

Thanks, AH. No doubt Jarman had greatness written all over him. Imagine him in the system today... He would have been even formidable than what he was. Magnificent player.

Sadly, my memories of all Jarman's football are sullied by the sight of him spending half the 1991 Grand Final on the bench. Watch the replay and see if you notice any Jarman possessions.

He froze when he had to stand up.

Yes, he had many games where he moved and played like warm mercury, but he never did anything for the Hawks in a final.

Never did anything in a final? How about the two lead up games to the Grand Final, West Coast in Perth and Geelong?

And, yes, I have watched the Grand Final replay, and surprisingly, saw him get a few touches.

From memory he kicked the winning goal against Geelong in the 2nd Semi to get us through straight to the grand final. A typical Jarman goal. Someone of his ilk would have been very handy in the prelim final against the Pies. One of the best kick for goals that I have seen.

Speaking of the system today, when he left Hawthorn he was regarded by many as the best player in the game at the time. The year before we'd lost Ben Allan to Fremantle.

By today's standards, we would have received compensation that would have ensured Hawthorn competed for flags well into the 21st century, but instead we received SFA and drifted into oblivion.

Just thought I'd mention his game in the 1994 Overtime QF at Waverley. 27 kicks, 10 marks, 12 handballs, 4 tackles, 1 goal. 39 possessions .... not bad for someone who never did anything in a final for the Hawks :D

Glad that you found something positive out of that game.

How is Jars' son coming along?

Pleased this post has been squashed by the above posters - check the facts before being so negitive.

Jars and Platts played blinders in the drawn final against North.

Anyone recall the mark against the Eagles in front of the VFL members reserve? From a very scratchy memory I reckon it was over Monkey Brennan.

L or R foot, Jarman is the most skillful player I have seen!

I remember DJ hitting Dunstall on the chest with 50 metre stab passes running through the middle of Waverley Park... a skill that unfortunately doesn't exist these days!

While on the topic of skilfull kicks, I would add Benny Allan and Pritchard right up there as well! :thumbsu:
