Darryl Braithwaite appreciation thread

I appreciate the fact that he hasn't put out any new material in a long time.
I also appreciate the fact that I don't have to listen to him.

I saw him live in 1996 and he looked old and his voice was shot. I haven not heard of him since. He once had a great voice with Sherbet and I noted that he did not perform any Sherbet on that live performance. I respect him as a songwriter and performer and loved his early 90's peak, but today he is gone

Incorrect. He put out a new studio album last year.

He is now 57 and performs regularly. He does include a Sherbet song or two in his set these days as well.

You must have caught him on a bad day back in 96 as his voice is still as good as ever - including his falsetto. He has clearly looked after it over the years.

I suggest you catch him at a live performance when he is next in Perth and see if you are still of the opinion that he is "gone". ;)

so who WAS the woman in the clip for "The Horses"? I vaguely recall it was Margaret Urlich's vocals (but she was sick or something around the time of the video shoot).

He was touring Tattersells pubs etc with Darryl Cotton, last I remember.

he didnt even write that horses song - the best one, one summer is a good pub song but..hehe they play it at some places where there's hottest chicks and everyone's singing the chorus

Russell Morris is still alive  How old is he?

He has tour dates set for the whole year so yeah I'm going with him still being alive ;) No idea on how old he is but I'm guessing around 58.

Pretty good guess, he turns 58 on the 30th or 31st July. He is a good friend of my cousin & I meet up with him every time he comes to Perth. I can't believe how packed out his venues are when he comes here, he has a crap voice. No accounting for taste I guess. :D

I hate that song & so does he, He was living with his Gran in Burnley Street Richmond when that song came out & he got totally sick of hearing it on the radio, so much so, that one day I was at his Grans when the song came on, he picked the radio up & smashed it. True story. If you ever meet him, ask him about it, his Gran was ********ed off because it was her radio.

Talking about biting the hand that feeds, maybe he should have a talk to Don McLean one day, if I ever meet him I'll suggest it to him :D

Maybe one day I will tell you about the day he decked Molly Meldrum. I started writing a book about the early days of aussie music, but my cousin told me to bin it, because either I would get sued, or that the people I wrote about wouldn't talk to me any more.

Was it because Molly suggested that Madonna cover one of his songs ?:)

I read he released "The Real Thing" in 1969 when he was only 18. So he'd be about 55 now

Well who ever wrote that was wrong, when he was 18 he was still with his group "Somebody's Image", "The Real Thing" was released when he was a solo singer. He was born in 1948.

Edit: It all began around ‘65, when a gangly 17-year-old blond mop-topped rock enthusiast used to hang around gigs by The Groop, trying to get attention for his fledgling young band of hopefuls called Somebody’s Image. Russell Morris and his cohorts were committed to their cause. They practised fervently for five months before even playing their first live dance gig, which happened to be one where The Groop (a favourite among Melbourne’s discerning punters during 1966) were headliners. Russell and his band immediately attracted the notice of their future mentors (particularly Brian Cadd and Ronnie Charles), and a long, valuable and fruitful musical friendship was forged.

The Real Thing is one of the very best Australian songs ever! When I first heard it as a kid I couldnt believe it was written by an Aussie.

Superb production and aurally orgasmic!
It was written by Johnny Young and produced by Molly Meldrum. :)

Wink wink, nudge, nudge, say no more. ;)

It's a crappy song, FFS, ooh mow ma mow mow, is the majority of the song & Russell's voice is the nail in the coffin.
