As insipid as Saturday's performance at Optus Oval was, at least a few Cats did as we hoped, that is to not take a backward step to the superior Blues. While knocking out two players is not something to be proud of, there are positives to be taken away from this bruising encounter.
Clubs have to realise that when they play Geelong, they won't get it all their own way. In the past it has been rare for opposition teams to fear Geelong and this is something that can change if we continue our hard-line approach. Sure this season has been a bad one, but the physical aspect is something that must be maintained if Geelong is to be one of the elite clubs once again. The number of tribunal appearance this season has been a little high to tolerate, so our aggression needs to be re-focussed on the ball, but overall the physical approach has been encouraging.
Darren Milburn's gesturing towards the Carlton supporters was unacceptable, but again we must look for positives. Next time we play Carlton there will be a big buildup and hopefully more than 29K will show up - particularly if it's our home game. This is what Geelong needs - big games against big clubs. I can remember in the mid '90S when Geelong and Essendon has some epic duels, you'd get 70K to a game. Although Colonial Stadium makes that figure unreachable, the respect from the big clubs and subsequent buildup to each match is not what it once was.
We need to make sure that when we play the big clubs next year we take it up to them it all areas. If Lloyd's there, clean him up, give Molloy a shove and start a melee, but also hurt them on the scoreboard as well. Geelong needs to be in the spotlight playing well against the big clubs in front of big crowds.
Good hit Dasher, love your work.
