I like the idea of Hodge opening the batting. He's done it wonderfully well for the Vics for a while now, and I really think D.Hussey deserves the chance to play cricket at International level.

Hayden's form is still a concern. Was gifted a century on the back of dropped catches, has forced the selectors to perist with him. With 4 of top 5 batsman out, we needed him to step & support Mike Hussey against the Kiwis.

No spot for D Hussey though. Vogues more deserving at the moment.

Hayden should do the right thing and retire from ODI cricket after the WC.He's bloody lucky to make the current squad.

I suspect you're right on the money, Haydos will retire from ODI cricket after the WC. In that case, Hodge up to open as you suggested could be a realistic possibility, he's opened the batting for Victoria previously so he knows how to face the new ball.

As for David Hussey, he's in a awkward position at the moment. If he keeps scoring runs in domestic cricket he will get a game or two somewhere down the line, but he won't force his way into the ODI team on a permanent basis unless he makes the most of his opportunities; like brother Mike did.

Moving to Victoria was a grave mistake.

I think he will be playing with his brother sooner rather than later.

David, as well as Mike, plays county cricket in England, and thats pretty much what got Michael into the Australian side.

Who cares if it's a long tail and no specialist spinner, it would bowl sides out, and will make runs (should be the side for the 2nd ODI), though Hogg has done nothing to be dropped, I think this team should be over there.

I agree that Hodge should open ... maybe even for a while at Test level ... but that's another story.

What I don't get is the argument that batsmen at #3 or #4 can't open ... such players often have to come in early and face the new ball anyway ...

David Hussey was fantastic yesterday, might slot into the ODI side one day.

If Hayden doesn't retire, selectors have to tell him after the World Cup that he is no longer required. He's done well in recent times, although only when he was on his last chance. I'll spew if he makes the Twenty20 World Cup in September.

Exactly right. Must show some consistency. He is either nothing short of brilliant or absolutely shocking. I've been very critical of him in the past, but I am enjoying his rich vain of form atm, but it must continue. I don't want him gifted a spot in the side because of his name. Must earn his stripes.
