Just a though, what has happened to this guy???

I remember about two years ago, freo and sydney were willing to give up high draft choices for him(i think it was the year bell went) and he had a high vaule, like a top 5 or so pick. Now he is 30 or so, dosent contribute that much to our team as he used to and is nowhere as dynamic as he used to be. He used to be my faviourite player to watch :(

Thinking back two years ago, what could we have got for him from syd/freo or besides massive salary cap relief, would bell have stayed if we offered him more money(i wish we still had him:( ). What do u all think he needs to do, i think get fitter and lose some kg'. I'd imagine he is a packet, so hopefully under laidley he prospers and returns to the david king of old
What you all think???

in my opinion, he's on his last legs. probably the most important aspect of his game is his speed. the way he could create a little space for himself over a few steps and also the way he could generate drive from the backline by carrying the ball. he certainly looked to have lost some pace. hopefully he will give us another season (or two). however, i can easily see him playing a reasonable amount of time in the seconds. we got him from port melb didn't we?

David showed some loyalty to the kangaroos by rejecting a better offer from freo. Bell would have gone back to Freo anyway as money was not his only consideration. I think we should all feel glad that the guy is a kangaroo.

Maybe we should try him as a defender and give makepeace a chance in the midfield. May work provided he accepted that we would have to play with a bit less flair and more discipline.

And we did recruit him from Port when he was 23 I think.

I always wonder why clubs don't look more to recruit players in their early 20s who are playing at a lower level. Look at Troy Wilson (ignoring the Mick Martyn stop marks on his body).

For mine David King still offers alot of value to us, he still has that quick burst of pace, and shrugs off tackles like no one l have seen. One hard nut to tackle when he puts his mind to it. l would play him on the wing, l know he started at half back, but like Pickett, he became too loose, l think if he was played on the wing where he could roam free, take those 3-4 bounces he and Harvey love tacking, and drive the ball down hard and long with his penetrating kicks.

His loyalty to the club should be recognised, he did reject higher offers to stay with us, and was a significant contributor behind the scenes last year when the ****e hit the fan.

Kingy used to be deadly from just outside 50m. But my main recollection of him this year is all the getable goals he missed, often at important times in a game. If he'd kicked a few more maybe we'd think he'd had a good year?

His first half of the season in 2001 was just sensational. I remember thinking and hearing from others that he had taken over from Carey as the most important player in our side.

I think he's probably past his best. But I hope to be proven wrong. Because when hes on song he is a match winner.

From whay others have posted it sounds like he was sick and tired of Pagan, so hopefully JYD will be a shot in the arm.

i'm certain that kingy kicked more goals in 2002 than d.forlan has registered in his time with man-u, not withstanding his recent purple patch. ;) kingy remains a bloke that can inspire others and i reckon he's been fantastic value for north.

Often the source of discussion on this board is the fact that we don't have a "front" man. No one is willing or able for that matter to represent us in the media or at functions. I believe that David King is one of the players that represents us well in this area - he is the one senior player that is often seen representing the club at interstate functions (that I have been to), when I have asked him at one of these functions why it is that he is always the one at these functions he replied laughingly that he enjoys these sorts of things and is happy to do it whilst it suits others to take earlier flights home etc.

I must say that he represents the club well in this respect - he relates to the public well and doesn't take himself to seriously, happy to be honest and upfront about things.

Although some of his media coverage has been less than flattering this year I still believe that he has been a great ambassodor for the club in and out of the media.

Whether this means that you can ignore onfield performances or not I am in two minds - however for mine he has been and certainly still is a great asset to the club.

Kingy's radar was a bit off this year but that isn't really a reflection of aging. He still is one of the most dynamic players in the AFL at the top of his game. Add to this that he is a good sized player who can handle himself well yet has classy skills and he deserves to be retained.

Then you look at his loyalty, his leadership and immense popularity with the young players (watch who is the young bloke's captain when they leave the field after training or matches) and he is a required player. And yes, his help when things went stupid earlier in the year was excellent. He provides a public face for the club and while he has a healthy amount of showmanship still very much plays for the jumper. Legend!

Kingy

He needs to reinvent himself as a hard-running back pocket. Make the small forwards of the AFL accountable, through his attack on the man and the ball.

Seems to me that he was feeling the pressure to perform this year. He was one of the leaders and potential matchwinner that all were looking to after Carey left.
Many times he put himself into the right position to kick the insiratiobal goal at crucial times yet just seemed to miss. In previous years it wouldn't have mattered nor been noticed so much because Carey or Corey were doing other inspirational things. This year he was under the spotlight and expectations were so much higher. The coach put more expectations on him by playing around the midfield for longer periods than he had in the past. It was obvious also that he had been told by the coach to go out and provide some inspiration.
It nearly came off quite a few times but in the end he just missed the mark. A matter of centimetres between an ordinary year and an inspirational one.

A good example of that was his miss in the third quarter of the elimination final. We were dominating then but could not find a break through goal. Then Kingy picked it up ran around onto his fav right foot but unlike in the past could not kick an inspirational goal...
Sums up the whole season for us.

Kingy had an average 2002, but was one of our best in 2001 and probably didn't have any bad years before that either.

Very brave to be writing him off after just one poor year (in which he was far from our worst).

By the way Diego, Kingy kicked 19.11 in 2001 (from 19 games) compared to 22.23 in 2002 (from 22 games).

22 goals as opposed to 19 last year? Given his form this season you wouldn't have thought so. Can't remember him getting a bagful in any one game either, so it mustve been a steady supply of 1's and 2's.

30 shots in 2001 as opposed to 45 in 2002, that's really weird.. Oh well.

North are better side with Kingy in the team rather than out of it.

He had a few "off field" issues to deal with last year like the Kebab man court case.(Who was the A-hole that posted all the tripe about him being a common criminal?).

That along with all the other dramas about the place must have taken thier toll.

I hope he is back to his Sultan of Sledge best next season.

GO KINGY!

jularoo makes a valid point about kingy and his media appearances, and a bloke who is willing to go out of his way to do this is someone the roos need.

as i believe jyd will be more media friendly himself this yr.

2002 was a rough yr for supporters and players and they still made the finals, all players are really starting afresh this yr as there are no pagans favorites anymore its a complete new ball game, and that just might of relieved some preassure off of some players.

i think i read in the hun that kingy was our 4th greatest possession getter this year....so he was getting his possessions somewhere...
