Watching the game yesterday from the wing i was starting to think how much better the side would be if these two played on a HFF and spent about 20% game time in the Midfield

How i see it we are two very good Mids short of being a Premiership team im not knocking Davis or Didak but they are not pure mids and feel they are being wasted they would be much more dangerious on a flank delivering the ball into our Forwards

How i see it we need a very good in and under Mid someone like Hayes

And we also need a quick inside and outside Mid someone like Cooney

What are your thoughts

I agree with just about everything there.

Our midfield is still our major concern, but I'm not too worried about the future.

Take O'Bree out, Place Sidebottom in, and we will be ok.

Place a fit Pendlebury back in there, and we will be ok.

Place Beams after another pre season in there, and we will be ok.

Pray that McCarthy can stay fit, because he can be that outside midfielder we need.

And yes, this would also allow us to play Didak and Davis as more permenant forwards, with only little runs in the midfield to relieve the "main" mids.

The future looks ok for our midfield, adding players like Wellingham, Blair, Cook, Clarke and even Brad Dick as future mids.

We may be struggling at the moment, but the future looks bright in the middle at least.

I still think we need to go hard for a mid in the trade period

Theres a few blokes at our club i think are going no where and would be worth something

Thomas could be the key to landing a pure mid his just another HFF we dont need

I don't mind, depending on different circumstances and situations if both of them spend the majority of the game in the midfield, however yesterday I was adamant both should have played most of the game deep inside the F50.

When the ball hit the deck, it was swept away far too easy. Didak and Davis would create havoc at ground level.

Also, it would have helped them with their hard tags because taggers are always worried when they need to play as defenders deep inside the defensive 50.

Neither of these moves were made which was extremely disappointing.

Brad Dick becomes extremely important next week IMO for this exact reason.

Also, I didn't like using Rusty as a BP/HBF. Throwing him into the defensive 50, in a game where the ball was going in there far too frequently was not smart coaching.

I agree with this, but it is the role Pendlebury has played for most of the year.

He has been the mid who has dropped back and helped out in defense, and obviously he couldnt do that yesterday.

I though Sidebottom handled the pressure quite well, but was "wasted" down back, the kid is an in and under midfielder, with the potential to play forward also.

Having said that, the positive is that game was worth about 5 games of tuition for players like Sidebottom, McCarthy and Beams, which is one of the few positives I can find out of the game I will forget rather quickly.

I think you raise a good point Beeg. Ideally we want the midfield to progress enough to atleast allow one of them to play forward and the other midfield.

I think we have a really good core of young midfielders for this to happen but the reality is they need another preseason or two to build up their fitness and for their bodies to mature.

We have Pendlebury, Beams, Sidebottom, McCarthy, Wellingham, Thomas, Clarke and Blair who are all capable of pushing the more senior guys (O'Bree, Dids, Davis, Johnson and Lockyer) out of the midfield or out of the team all together over the next couple of years.

I think we are more or less covered with inside mids with that group of players although a classy quick mid with good footskills would be very handy. Hopefully this will be Thomas - he is really piecing together his game nicely.

I don't agree with this. Thomas is finally developing into a very very good player for us. He is averaging more disposals this year than last in a predominantly defesive role. He finally has most of the elements of being a complete midfielder (not just a flanker) with all the development he has done. He also fits a big need on our list - a pacy outside mid with a touch of x-factor. To get rid of him now when we have put all the hard work into his development and he is looking like he will have a breakout year (I hate that cliche but couldn't think of another way of saying it) would be a massive mistake IMO.

Patience is the key with our midfield. It is still a largely inexperienced and physically immature group of players. We have the quality on the list to have a very very good midfield unit but the reality is it will take some time to hit its peak.

We should go after Daniel Harris. He has been delisted from North Melbourne and he could be the hard, in and under midfielder we need. When he was going well he was a good footballer. Starved of opportunites in the last 12 months under Dean Laidley, however, a fresh start might be just what he needs.

Paul Hasleby is really worth the chase if you ask me, put in a more senior midfielder to help lead the young guns.

Where did North finish this year?

Where did North finish this year?

Yeah ok then.

So based on your logic we should never have picked up Clement from Freo because they were a poor side at the time? Or Adelaide should have passed on McLeod because Freo were crap? The list could go on and on citing players from crap teams who have had good careers after moving to another club!

Daniel Harris would be a good fit.

We should have picked up Rey and HArris LAST year.

But yeah, Harris and Haselby would be good pick ups for now.

Get the O'Bree, Johnson and Lockyer the f**k out.

Lockyer is still very good for us has kicked 30 goals this year

How about someone like Burgoyne or Pearce for some pace i agree would like to look at Haselby

Thats more than a little reactionary.

Ray cost a pick in the mid 30's in other words to get him we would have had to have given up pick 29. Beams or Ray is it really a hard choice??

North wouldn't let Harris go last year but at the very least we would have been giving up a 3rd rounder - in other words Rounds or Blight. Was a no brainer really.

Our midfield will be fine people. It just needs experience and maturity that will only come with time. Experience some of our players won't get if we bring in established mids from other clubs.

Looking at our needs the biggest issue is clearly KPP. Players we wont be able to pick up if we throw away our early picks for players like Hasleby and Harris.

The only circumstance where picking up players like this would be acceptable would be with our nothing picks either 3rd/4th rounders + or PSD picks.
