Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack aged 66. The singer had been on a solo tour this month and had complained of chest pains the previous evening and was admitted to a hospital in Stuart Florida.

Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child, though he got his big break in 1965 when he joined The Monkees. The group had a hugely successful television series, and a slew of hit songs in the late 1960s. At their peak in 1967 they sold more records than the Beatles.

A precursor of every musical ripoff that's been perpetrated since, The Monkees nonetheless have a place in rock history.

R.I.P.

I don't own any Monkees records, but I reckon they were a great pop band. Had some really catchy tunes. Really liked Jones' voice.

RIP

My mum will be devestated, although I think she liked Mickey Dolenz more...

I like quite a few of their songs.. ( I think people tend to have a soft spot for music that their parents listened to )

What a sad loss. I loved the Monkees as a kid.

Their TV show was fun to watch and their music was easy to listen to. And they had one of my favourite band logos.

And even though they were an assembled group, they fought hard (against the likes of Kirschner) to gain musical credibility.

Their movie Head has become a true cult classic. And they left a pretty solid body of musical work.

Daydream Believer was the very first record I owned. I still remember the "what number is this Chip?" opening on the single.

And it was a great pop song. Written by the prolific and under-rated John Stewart (who had his own hit years later with "Gold").

It was good that the Monkees were able to make that tour last year, little realizing that it would be their last.

Davy Jones was the reason another David Jones in the 1960s changed his surname to Bowie. He will be missed.

Very sad news to hear.

Condolences to his family, kids, and his fans.

Said to my wife this morning when I heard, "you know we're getting old when people we watched on tv and musicians we listened to as a kid are dying"
Good fun music and although I was really young when their shows were replayed on tv in the 70's, I suddenly feel a bit older now that Davy Jones has died.
Agree completely about having a soft spot for music your parents listened to when you we a kid, guilty of liking Rod Stewart, Glen Campbell and Cat Stevens because of this:o

R.I.P Davy Jones.

The Monkees had some terrific songs. Last Train to Clarksville is my very favourite of theirs.

They certainly did have some great songs for a manufactured tv band. My favourite was Daydream Believer which is one of the all time classics, fantastic chorus to really belt out on drunken karaoke nights.
