Ok most nuffies (hate that word but meh) are going to have a hissy fit here.

So let me preface yes i think Beams is a gun and yes I love him but I hope he improves hence the roast.

His blind u turn snaps from centre clearances and even fwd 50 shots on goal are costing us (others also doing this but that's another thread).

Beams imo is just about our best 1v1 mid winning clearances often the issue is he regularly blind snaps out of the congestion, even when clear to give off backward to a player who has the "field of vision" open.

Most teams vs pies set up with a player 20-30m off the pack waiting for the quick kick out (we are ladder leaders in contested footy and winning clarances). Issue is we don't win "clean" clearances or make use of our clear wins going back to a player coming through who then kicks (instea of the rushed kick from congestion).

Beams is a great plaer but if he looked "out the back" for a receiver and gave off the hands more often would become our version of Mitchell but better due to Beams' other plus'.

This can also apply to most our on ball brigade bar Pendles who always looks to set up.

It's tricky because I also bemoan being too cute at clearances with over use of handball, looking for either the perfect set up or putting another player under too much pressure. I agree if they're setting up a spare and it's always directed down his throat, but i like a bit of a chaos ball in there quick to reassure the defence or to end up in our hands.

I don't feel Beams costs us too much with a quick kick forward and the snaps are often justified as he generally does not have an obvious support player.

The odd one is ok.

Beams cooked about 6 tonight alone.

My issue is they (not just Beamsy) don't even look to see if they have a better option it has become the 1st and only option they take.

The thing is last year Geelong setup to lose clearances and win the ball at half-back. Beams kicking like that is playing in the hands of the opposition.

Beamsy is struggling with his disposal and consequently the impact he has on a game.. long way off where he was at in 2012. Still gets plenty of it though.. just still looks rusty or something.

Loki, so many roasts tonight, you should open a chicken take away store. I'll take a 1/4 chicken and chips with gravy.
Beams had heat on him every time he got near the ball. He is not the problem, so not worthy of a roast. We're not going to be top 4 this year, so we don't need to turn on half the side each week if we don't win

I new I'd cop heat for it but it is more the style of play is now being used against us.

Beams is a gun and I am not "turning" on him mearly hoping the coaching staff pull up the footage and get him to look to give off bfr the rushed kick.

Yes it was heated but there were many occasions beams had the time to give off to a runner or at least draw a runner, the fact is he doesn't even look which is why the roast is there.

Also I had one more roast but held off our skills are flipping shite, I mean really really flipping shit.

I agree with you there. But, it's not the first week our skills have been poor. I watched Hawthorn last night. Seriously, as it stands, They will tear us apart like one of your delicious roast chickens. With gravy. And chips.

He's a pretty selfish player not that it's a bad thing because I think he takes the game on and tries to create something which we needed more players to do tonight but doesn't always mean it the right option.

+1. It's especially bad play to do this when teams are playing a +1. What distinguishes our midfield at the moment from the top teams in the AFL is not in winning clearances, it's how they use the ball when they get it. I'd argue that most of the time when you get first hands on the ball at a stoppage the best play is to handball first to players who aren't under pressure, kicking is for panic merchants.

Sydney won the GF because they did this imo. Hawthorn are also excellent at getting the ball into the hands of players who aren't under perceived pressure. We are terrible at it and two of our supposed star mids are the worst in the team at it. At this stage of his career Swan is a lost cause but I think it's difficult to accept that a player who is as good as Beams can't do better than just blindly throw the ball onto the boot every time he gets it.

Thought Fasolo looked pretty good upfield in his first game back tonight. He's a smart plarer, has a reasonable build and doesn't panic. They should seriously consider trying to convert him into a centre square player imo.

The big issue is that the rushed kick forward from a stoppage appears to be our main centre clearance play, yet we don't set up for it at all. Noone positions themselves to provide a contest 30 metres forward of the congestion. It has been irritating me for a couple of years.

This has been happening under only under Buckley?

The issue is he is too trigger happy on the check side kick that goes 25 meters while we set up for a 50m kick. Take the extra two steps and kick a drop punt 50-55 meters inside 50 and over the loose player at HB. So frustrating! Did the same thing kicking for goal and couldn't get it over from 30m. Shocking.

There's a lot of truth to the OP.

He did it out of defence last week a number of times which resulted in direct Sydney goals.

At least bomb it long towards the boundary not where the opposition clearly setup for an easy mark. Or perhaps our side should recognise this and put one of our guys there since BigFooty has easily identified it.

Would prefer having an outside runner going past for an easy handball though.

Beams sealed our win just last week with a so called blind kick. He has also sealed several wins with blind kicks. Adelaide 2012 with undermanned side. Sydney 2012 from stoppage. He was off last night. Partly because he was in the rooms the same time as Dwyer getting treatment for a rolled ankle. That's going to have some effect. No doubt he was jabbed just like Dwyer & Maxy.
I think this kid has enough points on the board to avoid threads like this. loki04 I'm normally a fan of your posts, but in my opinion this isn't a highlight.

Pretty good around the body kick most occasions.

We seem to either not look for an option or look for too many...... There were many times last night where we were out and decided to give an extra handball which sold us into trouble. Watching other teams play.... Port/GC for example.... They use handball to get out but they don't overuse it..... and they run, run and RUN......

Both of those teams will finish above us this year..... Just my opinion.

As I said I don't mind the odd one but teams have worked it out that both Beams and Ball do the blind kick out of congestion and set up for it.

He would be much more effective looking to go back to a runner or at least we need to have a fwd push up closer to be in the best position to recieve it.

Im a Beams fan but this is one part of his game id like to see tweaked and also some of our other players who also do it.

Also around goals is much different then in general field of play.
