Greetings punters.

After extensive losing punting over a number of years, I have come to the conclusion that my best punting is generally on set weights events.

Unfortunately, weight-for-age racing doesn't come along every day, so most of the races that fit that description are maidens.

In that spirit, I'm going to use this thread to give my thoughts and tips on set weights maidens run at provincial courses around the fair state of Victoria. Please be advised that I am an absolute mug, and am still working (occasionally) for my living, so don't be throwing Molotov cocktails through my window if you go broke.

11 July 2002 - Bendigo - dead track

Four maidens on the card today. The first two are divisions of a two year old maiden. Both of these events have multiple first starters, including several from some highly rated city stables. Far too much unknown in these events to have a bet.

Race 3 - 3YO+ - 2400m

Plenty of camels in this field of twelve, and the chances can be narrowed down to three. 1-Bonoval has enjoyed the longer trips in his latest efforts, finishing third at his past two starts at 2010m and 2200m. His better form is on rain-affected tracks, so the dead might not suit him here. 5-Sir Claude has been placed two of his last three over 2100m and 2200m, although the first placing was at Echuca, and the second was a third place, beaten 8.25 lengths. He's failed three times on the wet, so the dead track is in his favour compared to some of his rivals that would have preferred a bit more slop. Also by Kingston Rule, so he should have no dramas with the trip. My tip is 11-Sanderae Lass, a Scenic mare who has finished on their heels at her last three starts, including a second to Mookta Heights last time. She's obviously relishing the longer journeys, and in this field I'd be very surprised if she couldn't run a place at least.

Tip: 11 each way.

Race 5 - 3YO - 1100m

Another twelve horse field, but a bit wider than the previous. Plenty of first starters, but the two that create interest are 4-Guess Who, from the Tony McEvoy stable and 9-Windy Hero from Russell Cameron's yard. Both have city class jockeys engaged, and need to be treated with caution, although Guess Who is drawn the extreme outside and will need to have some early pace. Of the raced brigade, the two that appeal are 3 & 7. 3-Good Old Days came to town last start after three good runs from a spell. He ran down the track but returns to something like his class here. He's an each way hope. 7-Smytzer's Shuffle has had only one start, a second at Werribee back in December. Has the David/Vin Hall combination and is my tip. 8-Tan Tat has been racing in some good fields of late and should be conceded some sort of chance now he's fully fit. Tough race.

Tip: 7 each way.

Here's a thread that needs to be supported

As I'm too late for race 3,here's race 5 summary. Chances in racebook order,

3-G.O.Days-This is much easier than Flem, previous form good

4- G.Who-Lindsay Park,must include.

7-Smytzers s- Has the 2 Hall's,good enough, ran favourite when just beaten at only start

8-Tan Tat- rough hope.

9-Windy Hero- Russell Cameron polish.

12-Romanistic-in the market at only run, must go OK.

Far too many unknowns so I'll go each way 12 at the value.

Seth.

Too good DCFC

Race 5 -1st-Smytzers Shuffle-$4.60,$1.80
2nd- Windy Hero-$1.30
3rd-Prince Marengo-$10.90

Q-$5.30
T- $648.50

Fantastic trify dividend for basically the 2 favs & a roughie for 3rd.

Typically, I didn't have a bet today. Only way I would have got the trifecta would have been popping the 3, 7 & 9 in for first and second and the field for third. Still, as you point out, it paid very well.

Still, a good start for the maidens thread - $2.40 profit on a $4.00 level stakes outlay.

You see, if we had a racing board I could rant on about how two year old racing is stuffing the industry, and hacks like Charm Scene Land can make far too much money very early and horses with no precocious ability or nor sprinting ability are disadvantaged against these one-preparation wonders, even if they might be much better horses in the long run.

CSL - has won 2 races - $174K prizemoney
Mighty Amber, number five in the same race, has won 11 times and only got $73 grand in the bank.

I must admit I prefer the trotties as a punting medium but I do quite like multiple trifectas, seem to pay great at the trots.

On Saturday night at MV,a $2.20 fav won race 6,4/1 chance ran 2nd & with a 25/1 roughie running third the trify paid $260.

Of course it was a fairly large field for the trots but a 1*4*field got it for $20.

As long as it wasn't you!!!!
From your response it's fairly clear that not only do you know nothing about it,you have no passion for it.
Do I have to explain "passion" to you as well????

I was stiring - end of story, I didnt realise stiring was an indication of knowledge - I am sorry. Looks like I must be the dumbest "imvercile" on this earth considering no topic is too precious to have a dig at.

Apology accepted,so who's your early Cup tip????

Seth

I'm seriously thinking about having a punt on the "Little O" for the Cox Plate now to get some decent odds.

A Racing board would be superb, maybe we could call it a gambling board to get more activity and fill it with heroic tales of our betting exploits or in reality how much are we donating to the TAB today?

Sorry Sethlad the "underworld" has been keeping me busy.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm early predictions? Well considering I'm just a chick who belongs in the kitchen and have no passion for the "sport", AND considering I'm not even going to go out on a limb to predict a Grand Final winner - I am hesitant to give "early predications", because seriously its anyone's guess.

HOWEVER, in short, will these offerings do (in no particular order)?

1: Don Eduardo, a year older and stronger is looking quite nice to me

2: Elegant Fashion - I'm a sucker for a good name, and pre spring form gives hope

3: Two outside chances Ronny Maunds Think Big and Archer - both seem to race well over the distance, and are prob as good a chance as any.

I'll admit I know nothing about the O/S hopefuls, although I hear Dermott Weld (and I only remember this b/c of his name) trains a horse he thinks is a chance.

However, considering my racing interest is confined to a dull Saturday when they're on TV, or as an excuse to go drinking for a day and that I've never pretended to have a passion for it, I don't hold much hope in being correct :D

Good point, about being a chick that is.

1:Don Eduardo will go to the Cox Plate cos its owned by some Filipino billionaire who thinks its a more prestigious race.
2:Elegant Fashion,Caulfield Cup maybe?
3:You were going beautifully, don't ruin it.

Yes,I've heard that too,in every sports paper in town.By the way it's called Vinnie Roe.Two words for you,Helene Vitality.

Rule number 341,never punt & drink. Not on the same day anyway. That way you can spend more on drinks. The chances of you actually winning is minimal sober, indescribably low if not.
