Have had this problem for a while and still can't decide. Change of preferences end tomorrow so any sort of assistance would help.

Should I do commerce or Deakin or business at one of the Monash campuses and try and transfer into commerce at Clayton? Would my prospects of getting a job be better by doing Business at Monash than Commerce at Deakin? Got an ATAR of 81 so commerce at Monash isn't an option unfortunately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Monash would be considered the better school, but it won't be the difference between getting a job and not getting one. If you interview like a dick, no one cares where you went to school, they won't want you working with them. Conversely, if you nail an interview but went to Deakin instead of Monash, you'll still get the job.

It's really not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. Considering you're looking at doing business of some form (accounting, management, etc), you'll learn more in your 1st year working than in your 3 years studying, and your employer will be aware of this. I'd just go with which ever one suits you more, depending on where you live, if you have friends doing one etc...

BTW there is an education board ^^ which may have some info.

lol at these students thinking their uni's they go to will secure them a good job. No-one gives a stuff.

I don't any means of comparison but i am a Deakin post grad student (after doing my undergrad at RMIT). I've found them to be a good school so far.

Rioli Magic is spot in though regarding recruitment though.

I know a girl who had her heart set on doing Commerce (or whatever their business degree is) at Melbourne Uni, it just had to be Melbourne. She didn't get the ENTER, and then settled on Arts at Melbourne rather than doing commerce elsewhere. I don't understand how the university itself can be such a big deal.

I personally would suggest Deakin, unless you are confident that you will be able to transfer into commerce at Monash. Your job prospects won't be greatly affected by the university name itself.

Another thing I'll add. When you say business at Monash, do you mean Business Management?

If so and it's a choice between Management or Commerce, do Commerce. Commerce will allow you to major in any number of things, like accounting, finance, economics and even management too. Management is management, much more limited and to be honest not a particularly good degree.

I'm pretty sure 1st year for Commerce is all core units, so you do an entry level subject to all the different fields, Accounting 101, Economics 101, Management 101 etc... You can then choose which one you like the most to major in starting in your 2nd year, and can pick more than one major too. So for example if you do Commerce you could major in management and accounting, much better than a management degree, and you may find you like something like economics after you start. More flexibility in a commerce degree.

I went to Deakin, thought it was a good Uni to go to, I have friends & brother who went to Monash and none of them liked it as a Uni. The social aspect of Deakin was much better I found (lots of good looking girls at Deakin), good parties etc.

As others have mentioned it won't matter which uni you went to when looking for a job unless it is in something specialised. If it a standard commerce degree go to the one that you think you will enjoy more.

I'm a Deakin graduate, the thing I most disliked was the lack of sporting options (I was on the Melbourne campus) but that's just something you need to keep up yourself out of uni.

No it's actually a Bachelor of Business. Majors include economics, accounting, marketing, sports management, HRM, banking and finance etc. I would probably do it at Monash Peninsula seeing as it is closer. Commerce has mostly the same except more majors as others have stated.

I'm currently a Deakin University student on the Melbourne campus and overall I think it's a good Uni. Over the last 10-15 years its has definitely caught up to the big 2 which are Melbourne and Monash. Some even say its surpassing La Trobe.

Deakin is genuinely a good University, you can do a 3rd semester which helps to catch up on failed units or just fast forward your degree, low contact hours which can be good or bad, i think its good, alot of online content ect, i find it good not that i have been to another one...

VU all the way peeps :thumbsu:

ATAR is just a score. As I told one of my good mate's brother, measure success in 5 years time not now. I forgot my ENTER score but I'm in the lucky situation of being in a good paying job with perks and I'm enjoying life. I know kids from my school who are doing degrees on top of degrees and have no social life and ask why don't they hav a girlfriend yet? lol.

means nothing.

if you want to be successful anywhere you will have to work hard and network as well as possible. all uni's give opportunity to experience the social life n you are being negligent if you dont have a go at it all.

in this context monash probably sounds better but if youve already got experience youve teed up for yrself + you interview well then youre as good a chance as anyone...just make sure you enjoy wherever you end up. what you make of it n all that.

The ATAR score or ENTER Score as it was called before the name change does not mean that much looking back into your past. Course ATAR's are basically based on the forces of supply and demand. If the demand is high for a course then the ATAR is going to be higher as there will be low supply of places. If the demand is low for a course then there will be a high supply of places and thus the ATAR will be lower.

I'm studying at Deakin Geelong, I had the ENTER to go to Monash or Melbourne but I live too far away to even consider Monash and Melbourne didn't appeal to me - plus the trimester system at Deakin is really good for me. No regrets.

Deakin I believe is the only Uni with a trimester system. Its great we have shorter semesters but one thing I think is a downfall is that we don't get one week study period before the exams as it used to be. Did you have any
exams in the evening on the Geelong campus. Deakin Uni Melbourne (Burwood) campus which is where I am definitely has some exams in the evenings.

I found the trimester system very workable. The short study break wasn't an issue because I was well prepared and I had no problem with having my last exam in the course at 6pm in the city. I can understand why people would have a problem though.

Plus a massive break over the summer. It's something like the end of October until the start of March.

When you put it like that Deakin overall is pretty good. I agree also that you should already be well prepared for the exams when the short study break comes around.

Yep, I've had 2 6pm exams, they're not the best but they seem to schedule the 'easier' classes at that time. My friend had one day with a 9am and 6pm exam, now that was rough.
The lack of study time is a bit annoying, but I can't imagine I'd spend an extra week in full-study mode anyway.
