I remember him as a excellent footballer.
I remember most if not all of our regular footballers from the 80's to the early 90's as excellent footballers.

You have to think we were the best team for a decade and to make it into, contribute and continue to get a game for the Hawks then you couldn't be an average footballer. Your star just didn't shine as brightly

Yeah, he was a pretty handy goalkicker and a fair player but was never really and out and out star in his own right. We also had Chris Whittman & James Morrisey playing in the same era who were similar types. Paul Hudson started playing for us around 90/91 I think too.

My memory of Dean Anderson relates back to the 1989 grand final. Each grand final we played a drinking game where upon arrival at the GF party the guests were required to randomly select a player from a hat.

Everytime the player you drew got a possesion, you were required to scull a pot of beer. One of my mates, a big drinker, drew Dean Anderson he was convinced he was going to miss out on all the fun. The more informed of us , however, knew better. Suffice to say Ando played a blinder in the first quarter and by half time my mate was blind.

He threw up all over the toilet in the share house I was renting and threw up on the carpet in the toilet as well. So that my house mates wouldn't find out about the shenanigans that took place that day I ripped up the carpet and mailed it to my mate with a 'get well soon' card jokingly signed Dean Anderson football club.

Recieving the mystery parcel, my mate, thuoght it was a reconciliation gift from his recently estranged girlfriend-alas it was not be. For me it marked the beginning of the end in my share accommodation. I'm happy to say we both moved on to bigger and better things.

And as for Dean he just kept racking up the stats!

An elite runner and whilst not a real outside player, I'd say his strength wasn't in close or being closely marked.

More a midfielder than forward from my memories, but probably played both.

A bit of a chip kicker too a la Robert Harvey, rather than a guy that would cut through teams with long flat passes.

In 1989 and 1991, two players from Hawthorn, in my eyes, were the difference between us winning and losing both those finals. Not Derm, not Dunstall, not Langford....Dean Anderson and Darrin Pritchard.
Still cant believe Pritchard didnt make the ultimate premiership team.

Dean Anderson was a a good ordinary player who, when given the space, was able to have a massive impact on games, like those two GFs.

I remember him being talked about in the papers as a potential club captain and yet within say 2 years was off to the Saints never to be heard from again.

I loved the way he flowed seem to have effortless ability to pick up, run with the ball and when foot hit ball kick a wonderful goal whilst still running.

A great footballer, I will always remember him for one thing. 1992 when JD bagged 17.5, in the last quarter, Dean Anderson was one out running towards an open goal. Dunstall had 17 and needed one to equal the record. Anderson slowed down and almost stopped, hopping to give JD a "Joe the Goose" as Dermie would say, handball over the top for an easy goal. However, Scotty Turner, had other ideas not wanting to be the bloke who had the record kicked on him, and refused to leave Dunstall, so Ando chipped it through himself.

I remember him for three quarter sleaves (or long sleaves rolled up), and for the way he hunched when he kicked the footy.

If you want to see a dead ringer for Dean Anderson have a look at Patrick Karnesis from the Lions. Looks like him, has the slightly gangly lope, great ball control, can definitely kick a goal, and has the slight hunchy.

I'm guessing there are some wierd DNA experiments going on up here, just waiting for the Johnno Brown clones to start popping up.

Anderson was a very effective player for us, deadly around the goals. Pretty lucky to play in that era, being a dual premiership player in only 5 or 6 seasons. There were so many quality players in that side that he often managed to slip under the radar, our forward half would have been a nightmare to match up on. He ended up slotting a heap of goals for a predominantly mid/wing/rr.
Not entirely sure how the Saints managed to snaffle him off us, would have been handy in those declining years of the mid 90's.

Ando was one of the many players who player a part in a very serious hawthorn team. Very strong through the hips and had good vision. Player to his ability and strengths and had a good tank. What I remember about Ando was that he made use of his posessions and tended not to waste anything. Got to play a year of ammo footy with ando when he finished AFl and it was bloody good fun.

Caulfield Grammarian

Dean Anderson, Anthony Condon and in particular Darrin Pritchards run in the 1989 GF were immense. Plus 'angry' as I used to call him kicked 4 goals from the midfield in the best GF ever ! Anderson goals @ 2.40, 6.00, 7.45, 8.34
