I read in todays 'AGE' that West Coast may trade Dean Cox and that the Saints were interested. What would you realistically want for him??
Heath Black and 3rd round pick??

Not sure what we would ask from St Kilda, but I would be very surprised if it was Heath Black. Maybe give up something Geelong want to help us get Bartel.

Don't want Black, unless you throw someone else in.

Cox & late draft pick for Black & Maguire ?

To be honest, there isn't much at Pieland that takes my fancy.

Anyway, as I've said many times, we would be stupid to trade Dean Cox. Reason being, Mark Seaby has not yet played an AFL game. When Seaby has shown he can handle the rucking duties, then yes, maybe Cox can be offered for trade.

Cox is about our best player to be seriously on the trade block(assuming Wirra and Matera stay put, and I'm confident they will), because his value to certain other teams (ruckman, whats a ruckman?) is muh higher than it is to us.

Having said that, by no means is it a good move to trade him unless the right deal comes up- Ozz is totally right- ship Cox out, and we're gambling on a guy who has never played a game of the bigtime to handle our backup ruck duties.

IMO thats a gamble which could be taken, but it does mean that if we are going to trade him, it would have to be a part of a blockbuster, one off trade to get our single priority, that is, a young, talented kpp, who can slot straight into the lineup.

So, with draft pick adjustment as necessary, who would I accept for Cox?
Cox for Maguire + draft pick from St K. Maybe.
Cox + draft pick for Jacobs from Essendon.
Cox for a high first round pick (on traded with our other first round pick for Rawlings)

The pies don't really have a huge stock of kpps who I'd like. Cloke is perennially overrated as a third man who never ever has to actually play on an opponent- when he does, he wilts. Prestigiacomo and Tarrant are clearly not going anywhere.
Actually, Rocca interests me, if the deal could be done- we'd probably need *at least* Cox and a top 5 draft pick to make it happen, but he'd be handy acquisition, a good CHF, and somebody who can backup ruck in a pinch. I can't see the pies letting him go, though.

Really, if we lose Cox, I'm going to be pretty hacked off if neither of Jacobs or Rawlings find their way into a WCE guernsey next year- Lockyer, Heath Black, et al would be an appalling waste of time- since we're already lacking in the talls dept, why would trade away the tallest player on our list (who, to be fair, is still a season away from being physically in his prime and logically where you'd expect him to play his best footy) for a 'luxury' midfielder or small defender who really doesn't add anything to our team?
Cox for Lockyer, for example, would be sheer idiocy- like Taz a lot as a footballer, but picking up someone immediately after a knee reco is an enormous gamble, and generally the first season back is wasted. Given we're supposed to be gunning for a flag over these next couple of years, a trade like that would be throwing away our chance.

Good assessment though I would not trade for Jacobs IMO he is too undersized to play a key position role, plus we have a carbon copy of him in Hunter. I also rate Solomon higher then Jacobs.

Do not know much about Maquire so I can not say what value he would be too us, except that he is still an inexperianced player.

If I was to trade Cox, for a player that has been mooted on Bigfooty, and this is a big if I would only include him in a package for Polak.

Cox is definately tradeable in my books. Sure we have an untested AFL player (Seaby) but he has improved each game this year and I have every confidence he can make the next step to AFL level.

We need key defenders - Polak, Cloke, Hay, Solomon, etc should all be contacted and hopefully come under some consideration.

It seems likely that Rawlings is going to Geelong and unfortunately Hay might be staying put.

StKilda are low on KPPs also...can't see Maguire going anywhere. I agree that the Cox - Black deal doesn't really fill your needs. There was a rumour of Wulf heading West also, again not really in the same category. Maybe Black to Freo, and a Freo tall to WCE...can't interest you in a great CHF with a few years experience, goes by the name of Clive...?

I concur to early to trade Cox. If Seaby Beeck Johnson , any one , stand up in the ruck in 2004 then, at the end of next season, is the time to trade. We will have a back up for Gardy. If Cox progresses, or remains the same , we still have trade bait. Remember 204 cm agile ruckmen are rare. just ask : Collingwood ,St Kilda, Kangaroos and carlton.

According to Trev in todays West, Cox is untradeable. Not a guarantee but good enough for me.

Happy to see that one...as I not only rate Cox's physical attributes but I also think that he is very intelligent footu player too..aspecially for a ruckman....now if only he can put some weight on

at the risk or showing disloyalty at it's worst ... i agree with the thought of keeping Cox for another season, his value will only improve, and try to test Seaby out next year, then on-trade one of them ...

unless the right deal games up now.

I usually check that when reading any trade threads on Bigfooty.

It would appear Hell is in for a blizzard....
