Does anyone else think this guy is going to be a cult hero, i reackon he's going to be the next superstar of the AFL i don't know why, i have no reason's why he would be, but he has that face ;)

Everytime I read anything on here about him someone questions his fitness, curious to know how he got the reputation for being so unfit?

im the complete opposite, he just looks to me as if he wont make it, i hope im completely wrong.

+1 looks like a tool.. Hope he makes it though.

Will be an upgrade on pushup when he gets his fitness cherry ripe, has the ability to lay a tackle at speed and pick up the loose ball and find the goals, he has great goal sense.

Can also be a lead up forward, and he's a unit:thumbsu:

I know it gets used a bit but the Stevie J analogy is pretty adequate here, has loads of talent just need to iron out his off-field flaws.

I have no doubt he'll be a very good player.

It sure does!

Daniel Connors is Stevie J
Mitch Morton was Stevie J
Troy Taylor was Stevie J
Dean McDonald is Stevie J

...and every other club has 3 or 4 Stevie J's too.

He's become a metaphor for anybody with perceived unfulfilled talent. Dean is young enough to become anything, I would hold back on this analogy until he's at least into his 4th or 5th season ;)

Tipping there won't be a 4th ot 5th season if he's not Stevie J'n it by his 3rd.:)

Definitely has the facial features of Dane Swan.

Definitely a role for him to play as we always seem to be lacking medium sized forwards.

Wouldn't expect to see much of him in 2012 but if he is capable I'm sure they'll chuck him in to see how he goes.

Good luck to him but my money for next cult hero is Ivan:thumbsu:

Not a candidate for a contract extension anytime soon

Doesn't really appeal to me thus far and expecting him not to amount to much. Haven't seen him do a single impressive thing. Big preseason for him. Should get a good run in nab cup.

Much prefer helbig. Hope Dean Mc becomes a gun, but can't see it at this stage.

Actually UTG, we need both Helbig and D mac to step up. The kid could be anything, but believe me, if we can get D Mac up and about, the fans will love him. Can snag a goal.

His highlight real from the Tac Cup was superb. Second highest goal kicker in that comp with 48 goals.

Once he's fit they need to give him plenty of opportunity .

His chase down in last years NAB cup impressed me, don't know if there's any footage but he chased down a Carlton player showing lots of pace and strength to Take the player down from behind.

I don't see how he looks like Dane Swan apart from having a tattoo.

I'm always pretty sceptical on guys who need to get their fitness up, as it is so easy to do. It shouldn't take several years. Even coming from a long way back (which he shouldn't have been, as any kid who wants to be drafted should surely make sure they are fit) it shouldn't take too long to get up to a standard where he can play forward in the AFL.

Some blokes just don't have it in them though. D-Mac's natural peak might be well below AFL standard for all we, or even he, knows.

it is a long shot, but there are turn around stories about players in these circumstances, and sometimes they do become superstars anything is possible i guess

One of the biggest differences between us and the the top sides in the comp is our regular inability to get the best out of these middle tier kids and turn them into really solid 100+ game players.

Not sure whether its our coach's motivational ability, our training methods or the fact that we're just picking the wrong kids to begin with.

Will be a really good sign if we can get Dean into the right head space, into tip top physical shape and playing some regular footy over the next few years.

Otherwise this will go down as another waste of talent, a pick and/or resources, and a pretty concerning indication that we're still missing a trick somewhere.

This is ridiculous, to improve aerobic capacity is not easy especially compared to adding muscle (anaerobic capacity).

With a kid like MacDonald he will have a majority of fast twitch fibres and so his ability to quickly improve his aerobic capacity will be slowed.
You just have to look at AFL players to see that to gain elite endurance from a reasonable starting base takes at least 2 preseasons and I expect with MacDonald it will take at least one or two more than that.

(thats not to say that it won't have improved enough in that time for him to make an impact)

Its not ridiculous. At his age, he should be able to go for a run every day and see very rapid improvement. Yeah people have different 'ceilings'. Chris Newman will never be as fit as GAJ. Reiwoldt will never have the aerobic capactiy of Richo. But no one is asking him to have that. He should be able to get in a half hour run every day for three months, and then up it t0 10km a day. 10km should take about an hour within 6 months. And that isn't even quick.

ps. majority fast twitch fibres = dane swan. He does alright.

Wrong type of training for AFL football
Its all repeat sprints in AFL so interval training would be better
