I wouldnt have thought so...in most key areas Axel is in elite class

pace> average
awareness> average
handling>average
disposal = average

not sure how that compares to Polo other than chalk and cheese:o

Missing the point Bo.
The comparison was between a bloke who was drafted quite high and given every chance to a bloke who trained with another club (Melbourne) but was taken by us. Foley had more deficiencies than Polo (height being his main obstacle) but overcame it with hard work. The comparison was about 2 blokes practicially the same age who took a different path and the underdog succeeded!

there were many of us who thought polo taken way too high and foley well worth a chance.
foley has always been a ball magnet with good hands and good pace. his weakness is hes an average kick and thats being kind to him. size was another reason whay he was overloked.

when up and going hes an elite ball winner with good pace but because of weakness in other areas he becomes only a good afl player as his weaknesses negate to a degree his strengths..
hurt factor is what determines elite very good players. while axel can sure get it, his usage sure lets him down. i have always rated him a b to c grade player. that is c being good and b being very good.he has some outstanding attributes ofset by some ordinary ones.
polo bear where to begin. as a junior his best asset was endurance a poor kick a bit slow but could get to a contest with hard running. found his fair share of the ball as well. was hard at it. but in looking at strengths and weakness the rookie foley had more to offer than pick 20 polo based on simple criteria.
yep some of us were critical and polo in a way is typical of supporters supporting ordinariness and refusing to acknowledge that he is ordinary.

why is it if a player plays a blinder hes arrived or is a good player. we have acclaimed so many players over the yrs, who have had a blinder, or strung half a season together, or even had a good season yet in acclaimimg these players we over look the only system we should use in assessing them. that is strengths and weakness of each individual.

Exactly right.

Dunno why people keep bring up talent with Polo. He played 1 good game in his career. Maybe people are bringing up attitude as to why he didn't make it because of the Sydney incident this year?

All I see him as is a good country footballer but not quick, not highly skilled, lack of footy smarts, etc. Not an AFL player who finally got found out which would've happened a couple years ago at any other club.

there are alot here bagging Polo on his skill, talent and smarts, but IMO he had all the right tools, just didnt have the hunger to succeed and forge a career in the game. Another one who will sit at a bar with his mates when he is older and say **** i shoulda and coulda but i was a wood duck. ;)

Yeah I too reckon he had the physical tools to be a good player (perhaps a little slow) but he is obviously one of those blokes who just chooses to drift through his life.
No doubt it is totally his fault that he did not want to grasp the opportunity he had to really make an AFL career for himself... however...

I reckon the environment around Punt Rd in say 2008 - 2009 was not helping him either.
I mean he played games he probably shouldn't have because the coaching admin. had an eye to the end of their 5 year contract and needed to try to chisel the best performance out of the group without the appropriate eye on the future and what may have been better for individual players development.

Hardwick this year was quite happy to shuffle his cards and send guys back to the 2's with firm instructions on what needed to be done and they only got called back up when they had done the work.

Again I say Polo was not helping himself but had the environment been different in 2008 & 2009 he may have been made to see the light etc...

Then agian perhaps he was always gonna be a coulda & shoulda kind of guy.

Kingy & Morton came back from the 2s and had very good seasons. Polo was afforded the same opportunity but failed to produce the results.

lol its a littany of deficient players who have all played during a time that could perhaps be described as the worst period in our history.

have you ever stopped to think that these blokes and others like nthem are the reason we have been so crap.
quite simply we should have overlooked them like everyone else did.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that they're a littany of deficient players.

Wayne Campbell = 4 -5 time B&F State Rep and All Aust rep. Did occasionally has some questionable courage (One instance still harbours me when I saw him pull out of a spoiling contest when Anthony Rocca was going for a mark uncontested and within range) and awareness when it came to disposal - kick and hope.

Chris Bond = Was often referred to as the hardest player to play against when playing at the Tigers. Was disappointed to see him go to Freo. Disgusted with the way that Freo delisted their then Captain!

Andy Kellaway = Aull Aust rep and B&F winner. Wonderfully courageous player and was constantly played out of position as a key defender when he was a 3rd tall.

Chris Newman = All Aust Squad 2010. Unquestionable courage. Is all the better for having skilled players around him like Deledio in defence.

Kel Moore = Only a couple of good seasons and is playing out of position as a key defender - a 3rd tall IMO. Would be of more benefit there if played in the correct position.

Jacko = Has a lack of accountability when it comes to disposal and agression, but redeeming feature is that he is constantly trying to improve himself as a player.

Tucky = Been a revelation in the 2nd half this year and bar last year has perenially been up there in the B&F - which suggests that he's been doing the job set for him by the coaching department.

Thursty = A very good Stopper, but the game is moving past him as he needs to be more attacking in the modern era.

White = Inconsistent. Has the tools in pace, long kick, agression, and passion though. I can't see him at the club in one or two more years. I want him to make it, but can't see it being sustained.

Graham = Big men generally take longer. He has made inroads the last year and a half. Not agile enough for me.

Kingy = A fantastic turn around in the 2nd half of 2010 as a defensive forward. Still needs to improve a hell of a lot if he's going to hold his spot in the future with other players developing. Love his perseverence though.

Not all world beaters, but certainly not all attributing to the club's inability to perform.

The tribe has spoken

RFC would have done better hiring a psychic for that draft year with so many early picks it could not have been a worse outcome.
Deledio was a certainty the rest of our selections were a disaster.

pick 20 2004 hmm who did old santa claws prefer at that pick hmm a bloke called gibson who went to adelaide at 28 and lasted just one yr.
oh dear back to the drawing board.
probably shouldnt criticise the club over this pick but hey i wasnt getting good money to pick kids in the nd so to hell with it. geez i had some good debates over miller and the job he was doing.

all jokes aside and with a touch of leniency to the **** ups of 2004, apart from the one we talk about and will talk about forever, outside the top 10 it was a shithouse year for the class of 2004. Where we ****ed up is that we had the keys to the city in the wrong year. ;)

without a doubt it has panned out to be not so flash a draft but in saying that no matter the club with 5 top 20 picks you should do better than we did.

look rather than take drafts in isolation and pick the eyes out of them. the real problem has been since the inception of the nd 24 yrs ago, we have never ever embraced it and established tried and true processes to go thru.
i think finally in recent seasons the penny has dropped and we are starting to establish some pretty decent processes to go thru.
