Where is this guy at? Second year on the list and yet to play a senior game. Can't break into the Coburg seniors side and is often playing in the 2's? That's a worry. I barely hear a whisper about him ever to be honest. Can people who have seen more of him comment on him please and his place on the list? Why isn't he being talked about as a potential 2nd ruckman when we are willing to try out Graham and an 18 year old rookie in Browne? Can't be much worse than them and I've heard his very athletic for his size?

He's not a ruckman Barnzy, he's a forward. A 202.5cm forward. Very agile, very good below his knees, very good skills, very skinny. No good in the ruck. It's too early to call after one season but if I had to I'd say he'll make it. I wouldn't want to rush him though, he might break. If he gets a taste this year I'll be very pleased but if he doesn't I'm not too concerned. This is a guy we definitely have to give 3-4 years. The potential payoff is worth it.

Yeah I've heard him talked about as a forward and seen one game he's played in live but it's just he's listed as a ruckman on many sites. Might be worth a shot seeing as our supposed 'tap ruckman' in Browne and Graham although limited games haven't delivered huge hitouts when they have played so rather their around the ground work has come into focus. Very unusual to see such a tall player play as a permanent forward to good affect, only one that comes to mind is David Hale. Hopefully gets a run this year.

He would be dead on his feet in five minutes if we put him against any decent, strong ruck the league. Would be snapped clean in half.

Interesting, went over the stats from round 2 and Graham had 4 hitouts so you see what I'm getting at. These 200cm+ players are meant to be tap ruckman yet aren't delivering first use so their going to be scrutinized around the ground more.

November 9th, 2007 Dean Putt - Calder Cannons
Ht: 202cm Wt: 90kg
Junior position : Ruck
AFL position : Ruck

Tall athletic ruckman who can push forward and take a mark. Is a left footer and his kicking is pretty good without being outstanding. Had some games where he had a heap of hit outs but others where he didn't fire at all. Doesn't always do a lot around the ground but he is very agile for a big man and his pace is good. Proved to be very dangerous up forward in a number of games.

Strengths: Pace and agility; Ability to push forward and kick goals; Marking

Weaknesses: Doesn't always work hard enough around the ground; Should win more hit outs than he does; Kicking can be dodgy at times as far as hitting targets goes.

Question marks: Is he able to find something and improve his around the ground work?

Draft Prediction: Pick 30 plus. Someone will take him and hope he can find a few gears around the ground. His ability to take a big mark up forward makes him attractive.

Stats: Averaged 14 possessions and kicked 23 goals in 18 regular season games. Averaged 10 hit outs in those games.

Definitely a long-term prospect, dunno how it's all going to work out for him though as his competing with a fair few players for a spot in the forward line and 200+ cm forwards don't normally thrive. Will be interesting how it unfolds in the future couple of years. Will need to start getting games in the Coburg seniors for sure if he has any shot.

I do see what you are getting at but I'm also certain that Putt is not the answer in the ruck this year.

At 203cm and athletic of course he will be considered a ruckman when he is ready and fit enough to play afl if he makes it. You'd think he'd get plenty of hit outs being that athletic and tall

Stood next to him at the turnstiles at the Collingwood/Tigers NAB cup game. Very tall but very skinny for someone who has had 1.75 preseasons.
Worth persisting with as a key forward. He is quick off the mark for such a tall man and a good kick for goal. In a year or two will be awkward to match up against for opposition sides.

You can't say that. Blokes that big and skinny take longer to fill out than your average 6-footer. Lance Franklin was still skinny in his second season, so was Ottens - now look at them. Putt won't fully fill out until his mid-late 20s, the same as every other bloke his size. But he will begin to, and when he has the strength and confidence to know he can match it in the AFL, he will. Might be next year, might be the year after. He might be one who comes on slowly, then at 26 has everyone saying what a good player he is.

I know his old man, was the same as a kid, tall and skinny.
Hit the gym in his 20s and turned himself into a monster. Used to be a bouncer around the Essendon pub scene. Had a famous punchup with Ron Andrews and a couple of off duty detectives years ago.
If genetics are anything to go by will take some time to put on the beef. But just like the shampoo add, it may not happen overnight, but it will happen.
Worth persisting with I reckon.
200+ cm forward / ruckmen dont grow on trees.
Wish him the best.

he is at a afl club he should be hitting the gym there to try and pt on some weight. not rushing the kid but if he comes on he could be any thing. 203 cm tall is hard enough to match on and then he has muscle he could rip any one in half.

That description, Barnzy, sounds uncannily like Troy Simmonds in a lot of ways. I'm sure hes got a more attractive face though.
I didn't think Putt was a left footer...but I saw Oakley-Nicholls kick with his right foot and thought he was a left footer. :(

I remember Richmond were going to pick him up with there second pick in 2007 but they got Alex Rance instead thank god!
I remeber Miller couldnt believe that Putt was there at Pick 54. He was a steal!

Just like Miller couldnt believe that Casserley was there so late as well.
History does not give me much confidence that Putt will make it - this theory is purely based on Miller's record and ratings on certain players that he gets at bargain prices at his time at Richmond.
Is he a Ruck or Forward, another in between player.

I along with everyone on the board hope he makes it but I dont believe that any of our senior listed players get anything playing for Coburg reserves. I just cant understand it.

Casserley was very skillful. It's not Miller's fault that he copped injury after injury and couldn't get on the park. Even JON was rated by 2 clubs as the No.1 pick believe it or not before the 2005 draft! For everyone being so critical of our selections, it always seems to be a few years after the event. Tell me who are going to be the best players from this years draft (2009) before they are called up on draft day and we'll revisit your selections in 4 years and see how correct all the arm chair experts are. Player development is even more important than selection and that is where we have failed miserably.

Hindsight is 20/20......

Then you, along with everyone on the Board, need to understand that we are limited to how many players that can play for Coburg seniors, and when we have a good run with injuries we need to play them some where...
Also there is no point for example playing 3 rucks for coborg when we could ahve a ruck getting more game time in the two's. Sitting on the bench v running around playing footy???? I say running around in the 2's has some great advantages....

1. Game time match practice
2. Fitness
3. Confidence.... being able to play important roles.
4. playing against people your own size.
5. Developing Leadership
6. .... and it can be also used as a ladder climbing tool to show exactly where a particular player is in the pecking order. A great way to keep players heads in the right spot.

played coburg 1s last year did an injury and played a prac game for the 2s on the weekend ... so did vickery polak gilligan wouldnt read too much into that, he will be a long term project player wouldnt expect much this year but definately worth persisting from what ive seen, good below his knees good strong hands quick off the mark a good runner can ruck or play forward and a real competitor

Great post:thumbsu: Each week we have to play some 3-4 senior list players or rookies there due to limitations on numbers we can play in Coburg 1's. The 6 reasons given above show how VFL 2's can be constructive in a player's development. FWIW Rance played a few games there in early 2008

If he is agile and fast enough then they need to build up his stamina and start him on the wing, he would have a big height advantage
