We had a lot of good players last night but I thought Dean Solomon's performance went by unnoticed. I thought he had a very good game, looked to be moving very well and was a major contributor seeing he had only played the one game in the pre-season. I think he can only get better as time wears on this season. Well down Solly.

His attack was outstanding. But his composure was lacking.

The backline as a unit played well last night and Solly was a big reason for that. He certainly helped a lot of our younger players walk taller. Just needed to use the ball a bit better.

I gave him a vote. Watson and Hille prolly deserved it more than him, but i was especially happy with Solly's performance, perhaps because i wasn't expecting it. Looked really switched on and gave us some momentum early on.

First half was the Solo of old, tired near the end which resulted in him resorting to abit of sloppy play but still good game.

One thing I've noticed in our supporters since Saturday night is that our expectations have changed.

Last season if Solly had of played a game like that we would have been over the moon. Already this season it's "yeah it was good....but...."

The expectation is now consistency and continual improvement (I don't just mean Solly here). If the players demand that from each other as much as the fans are, we might just be alright.

Agree 100%. I have had high (but reasonable) expectations all summer. The two main events that happened over summer IMO demonstrate that we mean business:
1. Captain Lloyd. He has raised the bar, both for himself and the club. I have absolutly loved his attitude over summer.
2. The clean out. Showed we are no longer going to put up with complacency.

One thing for sure is the supporters all still love him, that run he did out of defence with the ball in the second quater where he ran through and put down about 3 swans players (gave away a free though) had everyone excited.

Early on, Sollys attack on the ball set the scene. Lots of strong opposition players look around when he is near. He is occasionally going to turn over the ball and give away frees but I would take that if he is so fierce at the contest.

It's funny how views can differ. I know he lacks match practice/fitness, and I thought to get through that physically hard game was a good effort from Solly, but I can't applaud his poor kicking and indifferent hand passing - where has been a feature of his games for the past few seasons.
I get the feeling that the pace of the game will find him out as well.

Past few seasons????

They guy was runner up in the best and fairest in 2004 wasn't he??

Bit rought to say that his disposal was poor and that the pace of the game will find him out... He was one of Essendon's BEST players only a season or so ago.. Has the pace changed that much since then?

He had a preseason which consisted of a couple of halves of footy, hardly ideal. Give him a chance and I'm sure his disposal will get better along with his ability to run out a game. Look at the effects of a lack of preseason on JJ (does anyone doubt his ability to run out a game when he is fit)...

I'm looking forward to a big season from Solly and I think, injury permitting, it will happen!
