Hi Chris

Long time Geelong fan, first time letter writer, but this is something i just couldn't let slip.
This week at training, Thomas Hawkins is to be excused from all training such as running laps, doing weights, participating in drills and tackling exercises.

Instead he will be soley doing goal kicking practice. This will include kicking from 50 meters, 40 meters, 30 meters, 20 meters and yes even 10 meters out on a variety of angles. He will require multiple bags of balls and a member of the public to stand the mark to simulate match day pressure. They will be required to berate, annoy and mock Tom whilst they stand the mark to also simulate match day pressure.

I feel very strongly about this method of traning for Tom and think it could be a winner.

Yours sincerely

Dear Chris Scott.

It's quite clear that our best football is played when the game slows down. Our talent and bigger engines prevail and we surge forward. Unfortunately for us we are 5 goals down against the good teams.

It may be ugly but we have a very tough run home and a top 4 will give us a chance. I propose we put more emphasis on defence in the first half to cover our lack of speed around the ground. We don't have to be up at half time just closer than 5 goals.

Coaching is easy,
YOTC.

And if he tries to kick around the corner, unleash someone who's going to run at him like Gazza did on Woosha all those years ago.

Didn't he kick that goal?

Dear Chris,
I would like to offer these constructive comments-

Sydney Game - 6 Point loss we will NOT make the top 4 for this season, get ready for next year.

The year is gone. We will not make the top 4 and will be booted out against the power sides which we are to play in our tuff run home..
Brave game but at the end of the day not good enough.
I am sure they will all say a great come back which it will give me the shits. Just heard your press conference and yep that was your reaction. I hope your rection is not like that behind the scenes.
The fact is we get spanked and play ourselves out of the game for long periods of time. This is now a pattern and must be addressed.

How do we improve in the future?
This was the strongest team that Geelong has put on the park this year and it was not good enough and shows signs of further declining.

Geelong sadly are missing outside run when it is a free flowing game. No spread or gut running and a reduced work rate, (the signs of a tired team).

Sure we won in all of the stats except the scoreboard. Slow start killed us. A champion side who feel they are better than they really are. Waiting for that killer punch and getting knocked out in the meantime.

Sadly time for the club to make some tuff calls. We were a beaten side by the end of the first quarter.

Scott keeps talking about the character of the side. I can see it coming, but in truth this is what they lacked. The older players have to stay involved for the whole game.

P.S. Tactical error - Two tall forwards and two ruckman was not the way to play Sydney on their small ground. Bundy would have offered much more if he started on the ground. Even if he did run out of puff at least we may have extinguished their challenge early. A come from behind mentality. Lets keep trying the same thing for the same result.

GEELONG KEY PROBLEMS
Lack of leg speed, (missed Varcoe)
Kicking accuracy for goal and under pressure is our biggest problem.
Relying on aging stars.
Geelong is a team in transition who is now paying the price for past success.
For long periods we have been dominated by the better sides which is a worry

FORWARDS
I would rather play Brown than Pods or Hawkins long term.
Even if Brown gets half the kicks at goal we would score more. He can kick straight. When our gun forwards miss it deflates the team. Must make room in the forward line for new blood (Pods to go, been a great servant). We must fix this now, however the coaches keep saying there is no problem. Hawkins has never kicked accurately since he hurt his leg and changed his kicking style. 5 Contested marks for 1 resulting goal. It is not a good look when your key forward does not want to have a shot. Are we all blind???. No future if we keep kicking for goal the way we do. The irritating thing is that the coaches say there is no issue

Johnson must be consitant, he is great one week pathetic the next. He has been playing away from the goals as the club tries to get more drive. When he tries the mercurial and it does not work, which is becoming more often, he is a liability.
Trade-bate for a first round pick. Do it this year if possible but it will be too late.

Stokes must go at the end of the year. Played a few good games this year but we have a host of players coming through with potential who can play his position.

No movement in the forward line and lack of marking power outside Hawkins.
Forward line too static

RUCKS
Dawson is a keeper. Big man with grunt and upside. We do not want another Mumford situation. He needs experience if fit play him.
We will not see Oren again in the Geelong colours

HEART AND SOUL
Get Selwood to retire before he gets killed. AAA rating
The umpires will certainly not look after him on the field.
Bartel is our Mr Fix It. AAA. Able to control the tempo of the game. Back or forward.
These are our best two players by far.

X FACTOR
Motlop has pace, is efficient and has heaps of upside.
He just needs to learn to get more of the ball, which he will.
He also has to develop the defensive side of his game.
Cristo is a STAR, pace, grunt and can rack up the posies.
Not sure we have other AAA players coming through. Needed the run, missed a couple of games, knocked out in the seconds etc etc. Fitness was not right but offers too much to leave on the pine.
Menzel is the other player with X factor but who knows if he can stand up. Must be given plenty of time to recover from injury properly. The supporters will go crazy if they bring him back and he gets reinjured, irrespective of what the medical staff say. Put him on ice for the rest of the season now.

BACKS
Scarlett is no longer a full back and is now a back pocket player.
When one on one he gets monstered by the tall forwards.
Mackie shits himself when under the pump but must be kept. Keep Enright as long as possible. Composed and tidy.
Love Kellys grunt. Tuff at the ball. Had a poor season so far but will improve.
Josh Hunt has been and is irritating. We keep making excuses. Maybe play him on a wing
Taylor is great in the backline but has shown he can play forward. I am sure they will give him more opportunity to do so.

Defence is too loose.

UTILITIES
T Hunt has a future. Has pace and plays hard
Duncan shows promise. Not sure of the amount of upside.
Wojo must be kept on the list.

Time to restructure the side and move on some of our AAA past heroes. Salary cap room required to draft new players and rebuild. Stokes, Pods, Josh Hunt, Joel Corey and Chapman (I know he played well today but my gut feeling) gone at the end of the year. Must make calls for our long term future.

Culture is important however the players should accept the tap on the shoulder when it comes.
The transition must continue.

WHAT WE NEED
A kicking expert
Pace
Key Back
Travis Boak (Johnson and round two pick?)
Continue to develop our younger players

I have been posting for ages and have never received a like.

FFS does anybody agree with anything I say or is it the rant of a mad man.

Didn't he kick that goal?
Yep, he did. But that's all he's kicking. It's dangerous. He's a big strong farmboy and he should be drilling them from miles out. He won't be able to do that if he gets so used to being able to kick truly only when he's curling it in an unorthodox manner like one of the true freaks of the game.

Look at him now. He panics if he has to take a straight shot. You can see the doubt. He either runs right up to mark and sprays it or gets the drop wrong or just buggers it. It really hurts the team. When he's not under pressure, he hoofs it well .. but when it counts, you get the feeling he's going to stuff it up.

It's such a shame. He works so hard to have shots, but just can't finish it off. He's so important for us now.

The year is never gone with Geelong, we know they are ALWAYS in every game, we even beat Ceows in the 2nd/2 early this year.
But if you're talking top 4, or flag chances, prob correct.
How do we improve in the future?

Disagree. They had the same setup, a tired Mummy faded after 1/2 time, great time to swap 16 for 28.
GEELONG KEY PROBLEMS
Lack of leg speed, (missed Varcoe) I have felt that since January.
Kicking accuracy for goal and under pressure. Yes
Relying on aging stars. Yes, but we're seeing good signs from 22, TH, Motlop,
Geelong is a team in transition who is now paying the price for past success. This is not a problem, this is an inevitable issue that you have to deal with, like we all do.
For long periods we have been dominated by the better sides. Swans are a flag fancy this year, we are not.

FORWARDS

Disagree. GF 2011 NOT IN YOUR MEMORY?

Yep, Tom must work on this ASAP, seems like Selwood has.

Johnson must be consitant, he is great one week pathetic the next. He has been playing away from the goals as the club tries to get more drive. When what he tries the mercurial and it does not work, which is becoming more often, he is a liability.
Surely you must now accept that is what you get with this leopard called SJ.

Trade-bate for a first round pick. Do it this year if possible but it will be too late.
Interesting. He is up for contract renewal this year.

Stokes must go at the end of the year. Played a few good games this year but we have a host of players coming through with potential. No movement in the forward line and lack of marking power outside Hawkins.
Agree if Varcoe steps up, and there's Byrnes as well.
Forward line too static

RUCKS
Dawson is a keeper. Big man with grunt and upside. We do not want another Mumford situation. He needs experience if fit play him.
Agree 100%
We will not see Oren again in the Geelong colours.

After 1/4 time, kept the home team with parochial crowd to about 4-5 goals. Cant agree.

T Hunt has a future. Has pace and plays hard
Duncan shows promise. Not sure of the amount of upside.
Wojo must be kept on the list.
Agree

Josh Hunt one more season. Too unique.
Chappy-leave it to him to decide.
Agree with the rest.

Dear Chris

Why the hell did you make Bundy the sub? It made no sense and his presence on the field was immediate. Your first big screw up for the year.

Cos he was injured? Didn't want him to run out of steam?

Simple things here...

Lovely comeback, but we want to see Geelong play well for 4 quarters. And not just against Hawforn.

Can't let this opportunity slip!

Dear Chris Scott

I must write because my normal sleep patterns have been interrupted.

Over the past 5 years i have become used to going to bed after the footy with a cheesy grin on my face and enjoying lots of dreamy thoughts about how we came from behind to snatch an improbable victory or flogged Richmond again by 10 goals and change.

Last night I was strangely restless and found it hard to sleep.

When you joined us last year you outlined a plan to win premierships in 2015 and beyond. I wanted to tell you then that i had already made room on my mantlepiece for at least three more cups before then.

Then you go "SURPRISE!!! and fill one of those spaces last year. And I thought you were rebuilding.

Those two other spots on the mantlepiece are still there Chris.

Don't think in 2012 you can keep up this new game and get away with it - I am watching and expecting.
Giving sides 6 goals start each week and then trying to reel them in may be fun for you but its doing my head in.

Oh and yes, don't think either that you are going to win the cup this year by really coming from behind and only sneaking into the eight.

That would really test my ability to sleep soundly.

Dear Chris Scott,

Our backline is too slow.

I would recommend putting T hunt back there and make Joel Corey or Duncan the tagger.

Please make Stokes a permanent midfielder instead of crappy leading forward, if he can't play that role then he can be a sub. He is generally pretty good inside and his lack of height helps with free kicks provided he goes in hard.

I'd like to trial M Brown in the backline and possibly play Mackie as a defensive half forward or wing.

Tom Hawkins needs to be our lead up CHF, keep Pods closer to goals.

I wouldn't mind seeing Chapman as a sub sometimes, his defensive pressure sucks and is just too slow these days. He really only gets going when the game slows down.

Please also don't listen to Leigh Matthews and other idiots who think we can play with one ruck, our ruck combination in the Sydney game was very good. It is expected that Simpson will take a long time to develop a tank and wont offer a huge amount around the ground.

I'd also recommend a more defensive game plan for the first half of the game, we are old and slow but our toughness allows us to run out games better. Better to be ultra defensive and keep the game close before running away with it in the 3rd and 4th quarters instead of playing catchup.

Sitting in the Brewongle stand last nite it was supprising to see so many geelong fans...the general thoughts of most is, that this year they do look Too old Too slow and that Tom Hawkins is useless

Dear Mr. Chris Scott,

I really, really hated you when you played for the Lions (apart from the tickletap to Nick), but love you so much now that your heart and soul is in it's proper place.

Thanks for coaching the Cats to a flag last year. It was incredible.

While this year is not as enjoyable, as an old time Cats romantic, I was born to be disappointed (well, truth be told, going to every game during the '84-'87 seasons led to serious problems with the bottle, I had trouble getting out of bed by the end of the '95 season, and the re-signing of Aaron Lord...well, lets not go there). But I have faith in you, and the club, and look forward to seeing us take each game head on. With a bit of luck, who knows?

Take no notice of the nay-sayers.

With love and respect,

James1970.

ps - tell Tommy to get some Johnny Cash, preferably on vinyl. He needs to learn what life's all about. Fast.

Dear Chris,

Any chance you could fire the team up before the game? They start games like they have just been having a nap on the couch.
Start the game coaching from the boundary and get into them.

Also, what should I have for lunch?

Thanks

Dear Chris Scott,

I believe you recently received a letter which, among other things, suggested you consider trading Geelong champion and 2011 premiership hero Steve Johnson.

Obviously, just ignore that bit. Must have been a typo.

Kind regards
etc etc.
He got the letter which I sent
He will consider it for the benefit of the club
I would be wrapped for a late first round pick but we would not get it
