Why didnt the coaching staff alter our game plan to suit the conditions like port?

A quick look at Kick-handball averages for both teams show the Tiges kept their average, and a huge difference with Port from their previous weeks.

I just went back the last four games for both teams, thats enough for a comparison.

Richmond round 7, 8 and 9 Average kicks 202. Against Port 199.
Richmond round 7, 8 and 9 Average Handballs 172 Against Port 163.

Port round 7, 8 and 9 Average kicks 217. Against Tiges 217.
Port round 7, 8 and 9 Average Handballs 164. Against Tiges 99.

Kick to Handball Ratio. Tiges 1.22 - Port 2.19

Tiges were slightly down but were still around the average, nothing changed. Port were down but the handballs were the dramatic fall. Even though they didnt get the pill as much, when they did get it they didnt handball it as much, and you usually get a few handball one-twos that pump that stat and that also leads to the chances of increased turnover.

Makes sense the less ball handling in dewy slippery conditions the less likelihood of error and turnover.

If we want to play finals this year.... which I dont think we really do.... then how about spending a little bit of that coin we get from selling the games and fly up a bit early next year.

If the conditions or preparations had nothing to do with it then I suppose we be happy if we prepared the same next year????

Tipping we will be going up the day after the game...if you know what I mean. If you want to make some good cash, start backing the GC now to win the game. We will be down by 7 goals by the big break and chase our tails for the rest of it. FFS the cats got ambushed but being the cats they steadied and took control, we get ambushed like that, we will capitulate like only we can. Stay tuned.

We are not better than Port - they beat us. As for preparation, well, if we got that wrong, I would have expected us to be blown away in the first half, and then adapt.

As it was we were better in the first half - you could argue that our preparation was better than Port's because we beat them out of the blocks.
Then the dew arrived and Port handled it better - they also played better in general. Should we have had a training session at 10:00 on Friday night to get us used to playing at that time? If going on the footy show at 10:00 on Thursday is bad, what's a trining session on friday at 10:00 like?

Theres definately some valitidy to the poor preparation and gameplan argument here.

The players endevour was poor on the weekend no doubt about that, but after reading some of the locals assessment of the conditions we were facing i think the club also got it wrong.

Will be interesting to see our prep and gameplan next time we play up there to see the clubs real attitude on this issue.

Just spoke to someone who works at the holiday Inn Darwin. Apparently everyone didn’t stay at the same hotel, players in one staff the other (players got the better deal by the way). Anyway our stay happened to coincided with the ending of the “Shitbox Car Rally” with participants staying at the same hotels. Going by what she said it was a complete ruckus with a lot of complaints, ending with a few of them being kicked out of the hotel. Very uncomfortable for everyone staying apparently.

All adds up I guess, but this one was completely out of our control.

Preparation? Conditions didnt suit? etc etc..

Plan A - see ball -> get ball
Plane B - see opponent with ball -> get ball off opponent
Plan C - have ball -> see team mate -> give team mate ball
Plan D - see goal posts -> kick ball between them as many times as possible after executing Plan A -> Plan C.

FFS, a bit of dew, temp in the 20s and we go to water? And we use this as an excuse? I mean, some fools here talk about flying to Darwin as if it were on the other side of the ****ing planet...its no different to flying to Subi and the prep and conditions have nothing to do with it. They didnt ****ing play because they were cruising on the win over the bummers.
Dimma should tear them a new one over the next two weeks.
A win over the swans is the only antidote to the shit they produced in Darwin.

While we didn't handle the conditions well, the real issue is that we didn't win the ball in the centre of the ground, and we had exactly the same problem against Essendon the week before and against the Bulldogs the week before that. Some of you just didn't notice it against essendon because Lids, Newman, Rance etc gave us so much drive out of the backline but the problem was obvious for all to see and has been most of the season. Until we fix that our form is going to go up and down.

But,

As long as we are competitive then the same set up in the middle will remain.... putting games into our young midfield is the key to our ultimate success. If we wanted to win the middle we would have Tuck in there every bounce.

Hardwick said they would review their travelling procedure when they head to the Top End next year for their second Darwin game as part of the three-club deal struck with the Northern Territory in 2009.

The Tigers travelled to Darwin on the Friday before their Saturday night clash with the Power in round 10.

"We probably we would have gone up two nights before and trained," he said.

"I spoke to Matthew Primus after the game and he said they'd fallen into the trap we did previously. The conditions are so different, the ball was - and it might not have looked on the TV or it might have by the way we handled it - literally like soap.

"Our guys really struggled to control the ball. We were one of the better kicking sides in the AFL but I think we were No.17 for the round.

"It was really unlike us so we'll do a number of things differently in regards to one, how we travel, and two, how we approach the game."

Looks like they actually learnt from the Darwin trip.....

I think we made the right choice taking the bus.... And I dont think it will have a negative impact on Saturday night.

They had a good rest before...They had a seat each... they stopped regularly...... they could walk around the bus... we have young players that recover quicker..... and it was at the start of the week.

these state of origin rugby players play a full game mid week the back it up with a weekend game. dunno what the excuse for poor form on the road is but in general ours isn't too bad. losing to sydney was expected losing to port in darwin was not. we should beat brizzy
